On guard: Police roll out Muharram security plan

As many as 9,997 processions and 37,888 majalis are expected to be held across the province.

As many as 135,098 policemen, Rangers and Elite Force personnel would be on security duties in the province during the month of Muharram.


This was decided at a meeting chaired by Inspector General Mushtaq Ahmad Sukhera.

As many as 9,997 processions and 37,888 majalis are expected to be held across the province. Police have declared 801 places sensitive and 288 ‘most-sensitive’ in 10 major cities of the province.

Total deployment includes 96,257 policemen, 5,524 reserves, 7,176 personnel of the special police, 1,445 inspectors, 4,517 sub inspectors, 6,424 assistant sub inspectors and 74,127 constables would be on security duties.

As many as 36 teams of the Elite Force will be on stand-by.

It was also decided at the meeting that 55 companies of the Pakistan Army and 28 of Rangers will also remain on stand-by.

Leaves of all security officials have been cancelled.

Strict action would be taken against those displaying weapons and resorting to intimidatory firing.

Temporary security guards will be provided to people who received death threats.

The IGP directed the officials to ensure installation of search lights and a public announcement system on security vehicles and arrange video coverage of all processions.

Installation and use of CCTV cameras, barbed wires, walk-through gates, jammers, metal detectors at all the entry and exit points of the cities and processions were also finalised.

It was also decided in the conference to monitor all houses and their residents on procession routes.
