Amidst unabated ceasefire violations by Indian troops along the Line of Control (LoC) and Working Boundary, Pakistani lawmakers hit out at New Delhi for its hostile posturing and raised the spectre of a nuclear war in the region.
“The Indian hostilities could trigger a nuclear war between India and Pakistan,” Major (retd) Tahir Iqbal, a lawmaker from the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), said during a debate in the National Assembly on the escalating tensions on the LoC and Working Boundary.
“If a nuclear war breaks out between Pakistan and India, then its flames will engulf the entire world,” he said in an ominous warning. He added that a “tit-for-tat strategy will work for India as retaliation [to aggression] is inevitable”.
Iqbal also said that Pakistan must foil India’s bid to become a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council. “If this happens [India becomes UN Security Council member], then it will enjoy veto power which would damage the Kashmir cause at the global forum,” he added.
Endorsing Iqbal, PPP MNA Shazia Marri said, “This is the time we respond to India as a nuclear state.” India claims to be the largest democracy of the world, but looking at the rampant and flagrant violations of human rights in Kashmir by Indian troops “we can call it a sham democracy,” she added. “It’s a fact that we cannot change our neighbours – but living peacefully is a shared responsibility.”
Interestingly, while lawmakers were debating Indian hostilities, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was busy signing applications handed to him by several parliamentarians on the floor of the house. And this didn’t go unnoticed as MNA Marri heaped criticism on the government for its non-serious attitude on this vital issue of foreign policy.
Taking part in the debate, MNA Awais Leghari, who is chairman of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, asked the UN to force India to fulfill its old promise by giving the right to self-determination to the Kashmiri people in accordance with the UN resolutions as recently the United Kingdom also held a referendum on the issue of independence for Scotland.
Leghari admitted that diplomats and members of parliamentary committees failed to record a meaningful protest at international forums against the Indian aggression. “Why did Western democracies turn a blind eye to the festering Kashmir dispute? Why did Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi not allow UN observers to visit Working Boundary?”
MNA Nafisa Shah of the PPP said that Modi’s India believed in Hindu nationalism. “It’s no longer a secular India,” she said and asked if Pakistanis were prepared to deal with this new India. She also slammed the government’s ‘vague policy’ on the Kashmir dispute. “We are tired of the government’s vague policy on Kashmir. It’s a failure of our diplomacy. Today’s India wants to integrate Kashmir. If it goes ahead, then what will happen to Azad Jammu and Kashmir,” she questioned.
PML-N’s Marvi Memon, however, defended the government stance over Kashmir. “Pakistan forcefully responded to Indian aggression. Now we, lawmakers, need to move forward and record our protest by visiting the Line of Control (LoC),” she said and urged all lawmakers to commemorate a ‘black day’ on October 27 at the LoC as a gesture of solidarity with the Kashmiris.
Marvi said Pakistan wanted to resolve the issue of Kashmir through dialogue. However, an appropriate response would be given to any Indian aggression, she vowed. She also paid glowing tributes to the Pakistan Army and said the troops were giving a matching response to Indian aggression on the LoC and Working Boundary.
MNAs Asiya Nasir of the JUI-F and Dr Fauzia Hameed of the MQM also took part in the debate which was ongoing when Speaker Ayaz Sadiq adjourned the session for Thursday 11am.

This Pakistan House looks better than the US House or the UN General Assembly...it looks like an assembly like nowhere else, it gives the feeling that the country to which this august house belongs must be some kind of a super power !!
Did the Pakistanis build this thing and design its architecture on their own or did they just handover the contract and big money to someone else? What are Pakistanis gaining by the existence of this House built on such a grandeur scale? Is anything useful coming out of its halls? I don't remember hearing much discussion on any policy ever. And most decisions get taken outside its halls- in army offices or private homes of big politicians.
@asim... in your response to Raj, I urge you to read this article from Washington Post, albeit, it is 5 years old.... http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/11/12/AR2009111211060.html
@AK:: Thank you very much, AK. Those who have the capacity to read, understand, and assimilate, please do so before harping on UN resolutions on Kashmir....
AK:: Oct 23, 2014 - 11:41AM:: I urge you to read up UN Security Council Resolution 47 from here http://www.un.org/en/peacekeeping/missions/unmogip/documents.shtml
It will dawn on you who is responsible for permanently making sure that the plebescite will never happen. Please also note the following: The resolution was passed by United Nations Security Council under chapter VI of UN Charter. Resolutions passed under Chapter VI of UN charter are considered non binding and have no mandatory enforceability as opposed to the resolutions passed under Chapter VII.
Pakistan doesn't have the money to run its country but its going to attack 1/5 of the global population with nukes and expects to survive? With these statements its the Pakistani people need to worry about their lawmakers and their mental capacity to run a country.
To, Editor, Express Tribune,
I have written well thought out comments on this article but ET has not published it so far but it is publishing lot of useless comments.
Please do publish my comments and show the independence of media to hear a differing opinion from those who are talking of nuclear war.
It is unimaginable to have a nuclear war in South Asia...I have a feeling that ET is biased toward those inflaming thoughts toward India...
I expect better from ET...
Best Regards,
NSR
@Gp65: Pakistan has nothing to lose in nuclear war as it is a failed state but India has many thing to lose.India is heading towards to become a economic superpower. Right policy for India is that it should detached baluchistan & sindh from punjab. It will beneficial for both india and pakistan except pakistan punjab.
@Raj,
You're living in your own little fantasy. If all of India is like you, we have little to fear.
India will allow UN inspectors into Kashmir if Pak allows UN inspectors into Balochistan, Karachi and KP. What has Pakistan got to hide? Hope that answered Mr.Leghari's question.
This is exactly the reason why the West will never allow Pakistan to keep their nukes. They think nukes are little spud guns.
Still wonder why nobody in the world takes Pakistani leaders seriously?
Pakistan, nuclear bomb threat deta hai, as if India doesn't have nuclear bomb. If Pakistan wants to suicide, it will use nuclear weapons. India will pump all its missiles loaded with nuclear weapons and throw into all cities in Pakistan, then Pakistan will know.
@Raj - USA: why dont you suck a lollipop while sitting in the USA. You'll kow of our Nukes when we (if needed) shove them up urs.
@unbelievable: Real range of all missiles are kept classified, plus in such a conflict many countries will have to choose sides and hence the war may spread.
@Zahid Wani, you sound like a Kashmiri. I urge you to read up UN Security Council Resolution 47 from here

Being ignorant and screaming your head off will achieve nothing. I am surprised that in this day and age the appalling ignorance displayed by Pakistanis and their leadership.
Pakistan blames Western intervention when it is convenient but then wants Western intervention in Kashmir. If Pakistan is serious about Kashmir, why is it occupying Kashmir right now? Let it be free. Pakistan hid Osama Bin Laden, it launched terror attacks via proxy attacks in 2008 and it has the gall to criticize India? Pakistan is allowed to be an Islamic Republic but India is a sham democracy? Not even Pakistanis believe in their own lies and propaganda. This is absurd. Kashmir is a lost cause. Pakistan should be balkanized ASAP.
Countries learn from experience. Pakistan is one country in the world that it will never learn from their experience. Can these MNA's imagine the disaster if we go for nuke war? Pity on ET that such news get much more important than the real issues faced by Pakistan.
India claims kashmir is her integral part. But India did not gave us a right to self determination which it had promised in 1948. Kashmir is in no way part of India like geographically, human physice, et al. Even if you ask people democraticaly about this issue, the answer will be only free kashmir or with pakistan.
Let India know when the parliamentarians are planning to visit the LoC. We would like to greet them with a 21 gun salute.
All rants in an ineffective parliament. Or is it to divert attention from immense problems that confront Pakistan?
Yup, Indians are having lollipops in their hands and not nuclear weapons. The official policy of India is clear.Disproportionate response. Its Pakistan's call whether to go there or not.It not like Indians are afraid of death.
I guess NS knows very well LOC problems are created by Pakistan army, it is not at all in the hands of Pakistan Government to control, so he keeps quite
Pakistan is the only country that is doing diplomacy by keeping gun on its own head. If Pakistan goes for nuclear bombing then Pakistanis know what will be the result.
And tribune you need to start doing better reporting and stories all the indian readers are leaving you for DAWN !
All the lawmaker should get together and write a letter to the UN! I'm sure they will take tough action against India !
haha, then try it
Pakistanis think we need a certificate from them on secularism and democracy. How incredibly delusional can they be?!
our jokers are in full force...the country is crumbling from within and look at these guys wasting time..
Largest "Sham Democracy" of the world, to be exact, Ms Marri! And now also a Non-Secular as proved by their largest public representative party's slogans. The camouflage disguise for world acceptance fell-off eventually.
Jumping, spinning and abusing the India and entire world in the cage is of no use. Come out with substantial facts and agreements to discuss the issues bilaterally.
really ? haha so you admit u cant win conventionally . ok got it - if there is a nuclear war there will be no Pakistan left so do it..haha the world is not scared of this nuclear blackmail Pakistan is more and more looking like North Korea.....oh wait for the IMF loan cause beggars need handouts...get some electricity and food .. God help the good ppl of Pakistan .
Spectre of Nuclear. War. +++++++++++++++++ Will also wipe out polio from Pakistan
We can call it a sham democracy ++++++++++++++++++ And Pakistan the real! Ask IK.
It is Pakistan and not India that has talked of war, let alone nuclear war. The truth is India will not start a war and Pakistan who simply much weaker in conventional terms will not dare to start one. Similarly, India has a no first use policy as far as nuclear arms go. Pakistani generals also know that if Pakistan use nuclear weapons, that willl be end of Pakistan and hence willl never use them.
As such a war itself is most unlikely, as Modi has said, let alone a nuclear war. So Pakistan needs to stop trying its sub conventional warfare of trying to push jihadis in India by implicitly threatening nuclear war if India retaliates. Modi government has called your bluff. Best to stop aggression. We understand Nawaz Sharif can benefit by trying to get all Pakistanis united against India but Pakistan will not benefit. All countries including India lose from war but Pakistan has much more to lose. So Pakistani leaders should put the nation ahead of their political goals.
Pakistan does not have a nuclear bomb nor does it have the capability and technology to make one. Yes, it has enriched uranium and can make dirty bombs which is nothing but spreading radioactive material over an area. Pakistan carried out nuclear tests with fully assembled bombs given to it by China. China gave Pakistan its older version of bombs. Dr. Qadir Khan has even said that China provided 50 Kg. of enriched uranium before Pakistan conducted the tests. He said that Pakistan did not use the uranium given to it by China and even asked China to take it back. Had Pakistan been able to make nuclear bomb, Libya, Iran and N. Korea would be having nuclear bomb long ago. Libya could not do it. Iran is struggling even to come close to the level of uranium enrichment needed to make a bomb and N. Korea is still having problems with designing a N.Bomb. Pakistan's dirty bombs may cause some problem to India but it will be within a small area only and also cause just a fraction of the destruction as a nuclear bomb. But, if Pakistan's army makes nuclear threats (use of dirty bomb), it will be finished for ever as world community will not keep quiet. Even China will not keep quiet now. It will matter only if Raheel Sherif issues a clear and unambiguous threat. These statements by politicians in Pakistan's assembly have no value and India will just ignore or laugh at it. In any case, statements like these from Politicians are useful for India to build up its case against Pakistan. When none of its civilian Prime Ministers or Presidents have ever been allowed inside Pakistan's nuclear facilities, what would these lower rank political leaders know of Pakistan's nuclear stock and capacity?
I don't think either India or Pakistan has the ability to launch nukes much further than neighbors who border their countries .... not sure how that equates to the whole World going up in flames. I don't think the USA, China, Russia and the other nuclear powers aren't going to exchange nukes over a Pakistan/India conflict.
