KARACHI:

The 'Abdul Sattar Edhi and Bilquis Edhi Transplant Operation Theatre Complex' was inaugurated at the Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT) on Wednesday.

The complex, which has been built through the generous donations of the Edhi Foundation, is a purpose-built facility, specifically designed to cater to organ transplantation surgeries. It comprises five operating rooms, a six-bed ICU and recovery area and a central sterile supple department. It is equipped with a state-of-the-art 'Laminar Air Flow System', which ensures sterility and hygiene that is a pre-requisite for transplantation surgeries.

The inauguration ceremony on Wednesday was attended by several renowned social workers and humanitarians, with Abdul Sattar Edhi, his wife, Bilquis Edhi and son, Faisal Edhi, as the guests of honour.

Speaking at the occasion, SIUT director Prof Adibul Hasan Rizvi appreciated the Edhi family's support for the construction of the surgical theatre. He said that the facility will greatly benefit those suffering from renal diseases and kidney failure.

Referring to the recent incident of robbery at the Edhi Foundation's head office, Dr Rizvi lamented the deplorable values prevalent in today's society due to which even people the likes of Edhi sahib had not been spared.

Abdul Sattar Edhi, speaking on the occasion, maintained that he had served humanity without discrimination of caste, colour, creed, ethnicity, language or religion. He expressed hope that the new facility will serve the needs of thousands of needy and ailing patients. Bilquis Edhi and Faisal Edhi also spoke on the occasion.
