Islamabad High Court (IHC) judge Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui summoned SHO Nawaz Bhatti to appear in person in the court on October 24 to explain why a previous court order to register a first information report (FIR) against former station chief Jonathan Banks was not complied with.
On June 6, the court had directed the SHO to register a case against Banks on a petition filed by Haji Abdul Karim Khan, a native of Mirali, North Waziristan, who had approached the court after his relatives and other civilians were killed in a drone attack in 2009.
Deputy Attorney General Fazalur Rehman Niazi had, however, opposed the petition by arguing that the area did not fall in the police’s jurisdiction.
On Monday, the petitioner counsel, Mirza Shahzad Akbar, filed an application requesting that the court initiate contempt of court proceedings against the SHO for not complying with court orders to register an FIR.
The petitioner had previously maintained that former CIA station chief Banks, CIA General Counsel John Rizzo, and other unnamed officials were responsible for the deaths of civilians including his son and brother in the 2009 drone attack.
