Gridlocks due to the movement of heavy vehicles on the IJ Principal Road during peak hours are troubling commuters and motorists alike.
The dilapidated and shabby condition of the road has further accentuated the problem, as the road is broken at several spots, for commuters who remain stuck in traffic for several hours during peak time.
The road, which segregates the twin cities, has a number of bus terminals including the main Pirwadhai bus terminal, which remains jam-packed round the clock due to the arrival and departure of buses.
A traffic police official said approximately 200,000 vehicles ply the road daily before making it to the main GT Road.
Heavy traffic from Pirwadhai, 9th Avenue, Double Road and Pindora Chungi towards Faizabad mostly plies the road, resulting in constant traffic jams during rush hours.
Muhammad Naveed, a motorist, said the negligence of the Capital Development Authority has rendered the road into a virtual nightmare, making the journey a quagmire for residents of the twin cities.
“The road should not only be repaired but also upgraded as a large number of motorists use this road,” he said.
Another motorist said the road should be expanded to accommodate the increasing number of vehicles in the cities.
He also suggested removing encroachments on both sides of the road, which is another cause of the traffic jams.
