Pakistan were the tournament’s only unbeaten team going into the final and were high on confidence after having defeated India in the group stages.
True to their form, the Greenshirts were off to a flyer after Muhammad Rizwan senior put Pakistan ahead in the third minute. However, India was able to level the score in the second quarter, with a 27th-minute goal by Kothajit Singh Khadangbam.
Neither side were able to break the deadlock again and penalties were required to decide the final. Despite having won the semi-finals 6-5 on penalties, the Pakistani penalty takers seemed to lack composure as they allowed Indian goalkeeper Sreejesh Parattu Raveendran to save two out of the four penalties. India, however, managed to convert four of their five to win 4-2 on penalties and claim gold.
Meanwhile, South Korea have defeated Malaysia 3-2 in the third-place hockey match.

@Jay: Hahaha. Feels so much better this way.
Congratulations to India. India played well so did Pakistan. Narendra Modi must be the happiest man with this win. I wish both teams all the best in future hockey games.
Congratulations Team India and nice try Pakistan. These are equally competitive teams and that team that played better at the last moments won the game. Of course both cannot win and one had to be on the losing end. Lost but not defeated and not disgraced. Thanks for giving your best.
wow ..
divided by borders (religion) united by sports !!
congrats !!
@Usama Glad to see positive comments from both countrymen. :) Nail biting encounter.
Oh really? The game was fixed by BCCI. :D.
I can't believe it! Am I looking at the right news site? No mean comments till now, no fighting?? Is everything alright guys? For a change, people are behaving maturely today which is not a bad thing.
Well done for both teams....like someone said JAI HIND/PPAKISTAN ZINDAAABAD victory is relative.....but the game was fair and square and any team could have taken it.
I salute (both teams) and their hard work...... Keep it up
Peace and prosperity will indeed come to the Subcontinent again...perhaps SPORTS IS THE DOOR.... Please take note..politicians and mothers and fathers....
Congratulations India and Pakistan... Pakis played very well until the last goal went in favour of India.
Congrats to India.Well done Pakistan, nothing to feel ashamed of. Good game.
@Aiman Kay: ;) yup the loves gotta be there...
kya bat hai mujhe lag raha hai hum sub insan bante ja rahe hain.......good for us
What has happened to this forum. No fighting ? This is the way it should be. This is just a game. One team will win the other will loose. It would be so nice if every game is played in this spirit.
Congrats India, well played pakistan. .
The difference between Gold and Silver was just SREEJESH, the Indian goal keeper
well played ... both teams !!!
Man, such good comments!!!! Congrats to both teams.
lets admit that both teams have yet to match the skills of Australian-European teams. Both are happy to defeat each other and least bother of their declining position in world hockey.
@kulwant singh: Well said! This is the mind set that is required. All the best. God bless you.
Both teams played very well today. But today luck was in our favour. Anyhow congratulations to both teams for excellent game.
@dharam: I agree. Now we are sports superpower. There is only a difference of one between the toppers China and us. Their tally is in triple figures and we are in double figures.
Bravo Team India & Team Pakistan. You are both winners.
It was anybody's game from start to finish which ultimately was left to goalkeeper's skill in which India managed to prevail. India's young team has to improve its skills in all departments if it wants to get better of the top teams. However, Pakistan who was short of practice at the international level played brilliantly.
Congrats to both teams irrespective win or loss. And in advance sorry for any troll that will come after me and spoil the positive atmosphere in comment section for fun. -an indian
Congrats.. India Also qualifies for Rio Olympics with this win..!
Congratulation Team India!!!
Pakistani Brothers and Sisters Congratulation to you too!!!
Gold And Silver dono apne pass aaye hai!!!
Good to see India and Pakistan fighting in field rather than battlefield.
it was a match well played. sadly only one team can win, this time it was the chance of India. without a doubt Pakistani boys also played great. jai hind pakistan zindabaad.
Good to see fast competitive hockey from both sides.. Now its time to perform better against European and Aussies
Hate to see both ind/pak go down against them with 4-0...5-0 scoreline in last 10-15 years Keep working harder and hockey in the subcontinent will be resurrected
Chak de India
I am impressed by the comments which give a great feeling. Yes, I too look forward to more matches between the neighbours. In fact, India and Pakistan have been done in in this game by the financially powerful West who introduced astro turf and converted hockey from a skill game to a power game. They have practically killed a beautiful hockey. They also converted it from a poor man's game to a rich man's game. Now just as in cricket, it is the time for India and Pakistan to take the lead and return the compliments to the West by declaring that hockey will henceforth be played on natural turf and threaten to walk out of IHF if they don't fall in line. Ironically, now WE have the financial muscle and the West has no option but to fall in. Let us bring back the beauty of the game and make it once again the sport for all, rich or poor. Eid Mubarak to friends in Pakistan.
Glad to see positive comments from both countrymen. :) Nail biting encounter.
Congratulation to Men in Blue for claiming gold :)
Congratulation to Men in Green for grabbing Silver. Despite no proper training camps, sponsors and clubs, still you guys fought extremely hard and remain undisputed till final.

Green Shirts showed great courage and strength but luck did not favour them. Sad but hopeful for future. Congratulations to both teams.
