KARACHI:

Vehicular traffic on the roads leading towards Guru Mandir Chowrangi was disturbed on Tuesday after the Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ) staged a protest against the killing of its worker in an alleged encounter with the police.

ASWJ activist Shahid Mama was killed in an alleged encounter with the Preedy police in Saddar on September 25. The party termed Shahid's murder an act of 'extrajudicial killing'. Party officials claimed that Shahid was arrested by the police from his house but was killed in a 'fake' encounter.

"The law enforcers themselves are violating the laws," the ASWJ spokesperson told The Express Tribune. "The police should have presented him before the court or the media if he was involved in any criminal activity but they cannot kill anyone in this manner," he said.

A similar protest was also held by the organisation on Friday but it was called off after the authorities assured them of their cooperation. "The reason why we are protesting again is that the authorities failed to fulfil their promise," he said, adding that even the policemen responsible for the incident were not punished.

The protest was held on main Guru Mandir Chowrangi, which caused a massive traffic jam in Guru Mandir, MA Jinnah Road and its surrounding areas, including Patel Para, Jail Road, Jamshed Quarters and Soldier Bazaar. The routes leading towards Chief Minister House and Governor House were closed by erecting barricades to make sure the protesters keep away from the high-security zone.

The protest continued well into the night. The ASWJ claimed they will continue their sit-in until their demands are fulfilled.
