Australia is a strong supporter of democracy, election process and democratic institutions in Pakistan.
This was stated by Australian High Commissioner Peter Heyward at a function held at Serena Hotel on Tuesday to bid farewell to 20 Pakistani parliamentary officers going to Australia to undertake an intensive course on management of parliamentary committees at the University of Queensland (UQ) under the Australia Awards Programme.
The candidates come from the national and provincial assemblies.
“This (awards) programme is very important for strengthening parliamentary procedures and developing Pakistan’s democratic institutions,” Heyward said.
“Pakistan’s parliamentary committees have great potential to support parliamentarians and government, with much depending on their effective and efficient management,” he asserted, adding that Australia is in a similar position and is happy to share its knowhow and experience through study programs such as the UQ short course.
