Asian Games: Pakistan’s topsy-turvy performances continue

Kabaddi, volleyball teams win; boxing, cycling, wrestling disappoint.

KARACHI: Pakistan’s medal chances were given a boost after the men’s kabaddi team beat Thailand 51-30 in the Asian Games 2014 at Songdo Global University Gymnasium, Incheon on Sunday.

Pakistan scored 29 points with 23 outs, two bonuses and four loans in the first half and then added another 22 in the second through 19 outs, one bonus and two loans. Thailand, on the other hand, managed to score only nine points in the first half but gave a considerably improved showing in the second and earned 21 points to take their total tally to 30.

Pakistan are placed in Group A, along with India, Bangladesh and Thailand, and will now face Bangladesh in their next match today. Their final group game will be against arch-rivals India tomorrow.

Meanwhile, India beat Bangladesh 30-15 in the other group match.

Boxing

Pakistan boxer Mohibullah was defeated by Kazakhstan’s Birzhan Zhakypov 0-3 as all three judges awarded 30 points to Zhakypov and 27 to Mohibullah.

Meanwhile, Amir Khan also lost the men’s light welterweight 64kg event to Japan’s Masatsugu Kawachi 0-3.

Cycling

Muhammad Shakeel was unable to complete the men’s road race and forfeited after only two laps. He completed the first lap in 23 minutes and 33 seconds, and the second in 49 minutes and six seconds, finishing last out of the 48 participants in both the laps at the Songdo Road Cycling Course.

Table Tennis

The Pakistani trio of Muhammad Asim Qureshi, Muhammad Rameez and Syed Saleem Abbas Kazmi defeated Maldives’ Muhamed Zeesth Naseem, Mosa Munsif Ahmed and Muhammad Maizaru Adam Zahir respectively to guide Pakistan to a 3-0 win in their Group C fixture of the men’s team preliminary round.

Meanwhile, the Pakistani women also gave a good account of themselves as Rahila Kashif, Shabnam Bilal and Aisha Iqbal Ansari beat Maldives’ Fathimath Jumana Nimal, Mueena Mohamed and Aminath Shiura Shareef 3-0 in their Group C preliminary-round fixture.

Earlier, the men’s team had lost to Chinese Taipei 0-3, while the women’s team were beaten by Japan by the same score.

Volleyball

Pakistan’s Naseer Ahmed-led men’s volleyball team defeated Turkmenistan 3-0, winning 30-28, 25-23 and 25-18 in their Group H fixture of the men’s play-off matches at the Ansan Sangroksu Gymnasium. Aimal Khan was the best player for Pakistan, scoring 20 points for the team.

Earlier, Pakistan lost to Saudi Arabia by the same score in the men’s preliminary round and will face Myanmar in the play-off match today.

Wrestling

Twenty-seven-year-old Pakistani wrestler Bilal Hussain Awan lost to Kyrgyzstan’s Magomed Musaev 0-4 in their men’s freestyle 97kg round of 16 bout. Awan also lost his second match of the day to India’s Satywart Kadian by the same score.
