KARACHI: Drawing a comparison between the size of the police force deputed in the financial and cultural capitals of Pakistan, Sindh's police chief has stressed that Karachi's police force needs to be doubled.

Inspector General (IG) Sindh Ghulam Haider Jamali, while addressing members of the SITE Association in Karachi, said he has taken up this issue with the government, and is hopeful of an increase in the police force.

"The Sindh government had made some recruitment, but we would like to make more," he said talking about the troubled law and order situation in Karachi.

Making comparisons in terms of police coverage of the population of both cities, Jamali stated that Lahore has a population of about 10 million and Karachi has a population of approximately over 20 million.

In this respect, the IG Sindh said, "In Lahore, for every 300 people there is one policeman. Whereas in Karachi, there is one policeman for every 825 persons, " adding, "The Karachi police is small in comparison."

"We have written to the government about doubling the amount of police personnel. They (the government) have the realisation of this issue, so hopefully we will get an increase," Jamali said.

On a separate note, Jamali addressed some of the "smaller issues in Karachi", expressing the need for 'community policing', and aims to implement it in the city.

He made a request of Additional IG Karachi Ghulam Qadir Thebo to also join the process of implementing community policing, adding that it is a system that is used in the UK, US, Japan, and even China.

"It is the most important and most vital activity in the world," Jamali said in reference to community policing.

Further, he said one of the biggest issues being faced by the troubled metropolis is that of deweaponisation, which would only lead the city to spiral further.
