Five killed as dumper truck hits van in AJK

The Muzzaffarabad-Abbottabad road remained closed for almost four hours due to the accident.

MUZAFFARABAD: Five people, including two women, were killed and 12 others injured when a dumper truck hit a passenger wagon on Friday, police said.

According to eye witnesses and the police, a Mansehra-bound wagon carrying 18 passengers, overturned near the Wapda Colony on Abbottabad Road on Friday morning after being hit by the truck. Two women and the wagon driver died on the spot.

Local people and rescue workers pulled the dead and the wounded from the wreckage of the wagon and shifted to the Sheikh Zaid Al-Nahayn Hospital and Combined Military Hospital (CMH).

Heavy cranes were called to remove the dumper truck that had fallen on houses after ramming into the wagon. The houses caved in but fortunately the inmates were not present inside.

The Muzzaffarabad-Abbottabad road remained closed for almost four hours due to the accident as thousands of people swarmed to the area.

The dead were identified as Sher Zaman and Reema Zaman, residents of Babu Muhallah, Muzaffarabad, Khan Zaman and his wife Zarqa, residents of the Mamond Agency and the wagon drive, Muhammad Siddique.

Two soldiers, travelling from their homes in Haripur and Mansehra were among those injured.Doctors have said that four out of the 12 injured are in critical condition. The police registered a case against the driver of the truck who escaped from the scene.

In a separate incident, a woman was killed when she fell into River Jhelum, while crossing it using a pulley-trolley near the Sawan Ghucha village in district Hattain Bala on Friday.

Her body was recovred and handed over to her relatives, a police official said.
