PESHAWAR: While Afghanistan observes the World Pukhtun Culture Day every year, this would be the first time Pakistanis will be marking the event. Pak-Afghan Forum announced on Monday it would organise a colourful program in the city to celebrate the occasion on September 23 (today).

During a news conference at Peshawar Press Club, Pak-Afghan Forum Chairman Alamzeb Khan said the culture and traditions of Pukhtuns established their identity to the rest of the world. Steps were necessary to preserve this identity, added Khan. The event planned for September 23 at Nishtar Hall will reflect the true spirit of Pukhtuns, said the chairman.

He said Pukhtuns respect other cultures and civilisations and expect the same appreciation in return. “Poetry, music, attire, customs and several other aspects make a culture,” he added.

At a meeting of the forum, Khan said, it was decided to mark the day in Pakistan for the first time and other parts of the world. He underlined special arrangements were being made in both countries.

Khan stated a cultural show will be arranged at Nishar Hall which will last two days. In addition to poetry sessions, traditional dress exhibits and performances of Pashto music and dances, there will also be lectures, speeches and dialogues with cultural experts to create awareness among the youth.

“The main aim of these efforts is to protect Pukhtun traditions and present our softer side to the world,” he said.

Apart from Peshawar, the day will also be celebrated in Islamabad, Quetta and Karachi as well as foreign countries like Germany, Canada and several others, revealed Khan.

The chairman of the forum said Pukhtuns are seen by some across the world as extremists, fundamentalists or terrorists and stressed it was necessary “to show the world that we are peaceful people with a vibrant culture and traditions”.
