Yes Mr or Mrs VIP will keep doing many things that VIPs in this country do, but holding an aircraft waiting won’t be among them. See, nothing works like a deluge of abuse from passengers, and the nation. And surely nothing works like a VIP caught doing the VIP thing on camera and then getting a right royal smacking on screens.
What we saw happening on that aircraft was an outrageously effective way to thrash some sense into those who strut around with a misplaced sense of entitlement. Sixty-four years of this abuse of power is enough and we won’t take it any more, one passenger was heard saying. He was right. This nonsense has to stop. And if it does not, then we the people will start meting out rough and ready justice.
Clap, clap. Rough and ready justice is well, rough. And to those wronged, it feels just right. You do wrong, you are introduced to pain. Simple. But sometimes simple is not good enough. Sometimes simple needs to be a bit more complex. And so in a strangely simple yet complex way, what happened on that aircraft says a lot about what is happening on D Chowk in Islamabad.
No, it’s not that much of a stretch. The fuming passengers dealt sternly with two VIPs. They threw them out. The fuming crowd at D Chowk is dealing with a parliament — full of VIPs. They want to throw them out. The passengers were wronged by the VIPs. The nation has been wronged by the rulers inhabiting the parliament, and other grim corridors of power. The passengers shouted, abused and said enough is enough. The crowd at D Chowk, and elsewhere, is also shouting, abusing and saying, enough.
Enough because what the passengers on the aircraft felt, and how they reacted, has resonated deeply with this nation. How dare these pompous, stuffy VIPs take us for granted. How dare these fat cats ruling us bend and twist the system to suit themselves at our expense. How dare the mighty use the law to whip us while using the same law to shield themselves. How dare they heap privileges on themselves while heaping scorn on us.
And this is precisely why Imran Khan and Tahirul Qadri’s rhetoric continues to resonate among the populace. Laced with vitriol and dipped in poison, their words are reverberating loudly across the country. People nod when they hear them. Yes we too want a better life, they say. We too want the rulers to play by the rules, and pay for the wrongs they commit. We too want to feel empowered like the passengers on the aircraft; empowered to hold the high and mighty by the scruffs of their necks and shake them till their teeth rattle. That would feel so good. That would feel so right. That would feel so just.
But simple is not always simple. The passengers threw out the pompous and stuffy VIPs from the aircraft. They did wrong. They took the law into their own hands. They became a mob. And they did exactly what the mob does: hand out rough and ready justice. Imagine if they had allowed the VIPs to board the plane, and then shamed them throughout the journey. And yes filmed the shaming process. Imagine the impact that would have had. Imagine that.
Now imagine the crowd at D Chowk dragging out pompous and stuffy VIPs from the palatial buildings on that broad avenue, and meting out rough and ready justice. Yes you can hear the roars of approval; you can hear the cheering and jeering; and perhaps you can also sense that a lynching is imminent.
Do we want this to happen? If the answer is no, which it should be, then lynching a government amounts to the same thing. Yes indeed these fat cats who rule us need a good whacking; yes indeed they need to be force-fed lots of yucky-tasting humble pie; and yes they absolutely need to be shamed like the VIPs on the aircraft. But throwing them out like this is just plain simple wrong.
Do I hear howls of protest? Know this then: What Imran Khan and Tahir Qadri are saying is right. What Imran Khan and Qadri are doing is not right.
Together these two men have achieved what few could have imagined. They have stripped off the layers of hypocrisy that masks the real face of our fat cat rulers, and exposed them for what they are: archaic political creatures increasingly out of step with the sentiments of the nation. Together these two men have thrust their hands inside the throats of these fat cats and pulled out concessions that needed to be pulled out. Together these two men have brought such Titans to their knees and forced them to acquiesce to just demands.
But time to stop now. Yes, because for these two men, slowly and surely, the law of diminishing returns is setting in. Slowly and surely, the plot is being lost; their grip is being loosened; their narrative being weakened; their moral strength being sapped. This is bad for all of us. Both men deserve to walk away as victors. Yes, they need to walk away. And when do they, they will be clutching under their arms a bouquet of reforms that will surely weaken the fat cats and strengthen this nation.
The alternative is twofold. And terrible. One, both men succeed somehow in smashing the government and system, and then beating their chests like Tarzan. Might then would indeed have become right. We might as well kiss this infantile democracy goodbye.
Two, both men stay where they are and gradually get reduced to two lonely men withering away in the full glare of cameras. Till the cameras also get tired and walk away. Fat cats would then beat their chests like Tarzan and we may as well kiss all thoughts of reform and progress away.
Tarzans we do not need.

@Oats:
Wow, and which one this laundry list of accusations is the abuse of public office or money?
@Kiren Khan: Imran Khan is part of the VIP culture that thinks it is above the law. Why else does he think he can force an elected PM voted in by majority millions to resign with few thousand protesters? He thinks he can have children in US with Sita White and not pay alimony, he can rule his party like dictator and force members to resign when they don't want, his ex wife runs around with Russell Brandt a dirty comedian and no one cares and he owns millions of dollars of expensive UK property with his rich father in law Goldsmiths money. Imran Khan is worse VIP than Nawaz Sharif who only made money through work selling metal in small family business. Imran Khan needs to resign from PTI party.
@MaharajUSA: But there is proof, as per the order of a US court that IK fathered a daughter with Sita White. Imran should own her and be responsible for her welfare. In case, the judgment of the US court is wrong, IK should offer to have a DNA verification. Should he fail to do that and not attempt to disprove the ruling of the court, it would be akin to NS's failure to verify the results of the four constituencies that IK has alleged were rigged. Nay, it would be worse since IK has been judged by the court but no court has judged NS so far. Should IK disprove the US court, I shall consider him not only the real Tarzan but the real Lion.
@MaharajUSA: Do you think politicians are stupid? They leave a paper trail for anyone to pickup and convict them? Pretty sure, in India they have lots of politicians with below normal intelligence.. With a huge huge population. that can result in genetics issues. Inbreeding can cause autism. Which is prevalent in India.
@Evidence: And, what is plausible is not necessarily, actual. Spot on.
Those must share proof who accuses politicians/public figures, no matter whom, especially of looting the nation. If they have none then they better shut up, period.
" Nawaz Sharif ... whose unsurpassed greed, thievery, murders, stupidity, Louis XIV-style love of luxury, and chronic lying are well-known to the nation. " It is sad that educated people like you and IK should accuse without presenting a shed of evidence. Without evidence, I can accuse IK about embezzling funds from the Shaukat Khanam Memorial Hospital and paying bribes to the auditors to get it approved. I can accuse him of acquiring a huge property beyond his means at Bani Gala. But i won't because I have no evidence. Suspicions do not amount to evidence. And, what is plausible is not necessary, actual.
@Actually: And, that is the crux of the conspiracy that sees dharnas in Islamabad.
Imran Khan hasn't dragged Nawaz Sharif or any parliamentarians out of the National Assembly. Nor does he plan to. So I think that bit of your analogy is off the mark.
I also don't think he's being "Tarzan", unless it's your term for bringing public pressure to bear when all other democratic means prove futile. (Please remember that peaceful protests are a part of democracy - not really from the jungle.) The past few days have fully exposed the way the ruling elite has mastered the mechanics of our democratic system - the way they follow or circumvent its rules at will according to what suits their very personal interests (which are often directly in conflict with personal interest). The people sitting in the Parliament don't have a right to sit there because they didn't get there through fair elections. As self-proclaimed beacons of democracy, they should have been the ones to call fresh elections, instead of killing citizens who raised this demand.
Pakistanis like me, who are not only superficially fed up with the VIP culture, but who also long in their hearts for a country that truly honors all its citizens in every respect, will always view Imran Khan's stand as right, fair, courageous, selfless and a symbol of hope for the country. If he's not diplomatic, if he speaks of wringing a few necks now and then, honestly, we can live with it. We even enjoy it because we daydream about the same things from time to time. What we can't live with is people like Nawaz Sharif who have utterly distorted notions of right and wrong in this country, who make a mockery of democracy with their selfish and extremely selected application of it, whose unsurpassed greed, thievery, murders, stupidity, Louis XIV-style love of luxury, and chronic lying are well-known to the nation.
So don't worry, Imran Khan is nowhere near being reduced to a shell of a man or any such thing. Time will tell how this stand-off ends, but I think the person you should be more worried about is Nawaz Sharif, whose appetite and placid looting of the nation must be suffering greatly, and whose international fame is rising daily with increasing calls of Go Nawaz Go, not just from Pakistanis!
@Akber Shakil: Maybe we should rewrite this as evidence is emerging that PTI forced members to resign when they didn;t want to or that they have wasted a billion rupees on violent protests while people are struggling through floods and IDPs are suffering. PTI should be ashamed of itself!
@Beware: Both Qadri and Imran are pawns of the retired generals from the Musharraf era plus possible backing with some in-service elements in the establishment. And, true that Qadri is the uniting connection between IK and Altaf who was supposedly playing host to IK in Karachi. (Gone are the times when IK was fighting a case against Altaf.) All are cooperating to oust NS. And, all of them want to bring back the times of Musharraf era, with or without Musharraf at the helm.
Sectarian inclined Qadri and Altaf are now fielding IK together.
ik and tuq are asking pakistan to overthrow the world order . its not likely to happen .. other than through the fog of islamabad's winter and sleight of hands .. just take a look at the arab springs, the color revolutions before them and the march 14 conquest of lebanon .. none of them real, an illusion of people beating the system .. want to see how it works watch ukraine today or egypt of yesterday.
ik and tuq on present course cannot deliver without the army .. and as long as the military have a finger in the pie the change is not going to happen soon. its about the status quo remaining in power. and no military in the world has relinquished power or control and every politician knows and understand this fact of life.
a smart politician would now take what has been won and build upon the support for the policies. the public can determine pakistans democracy, by-passing the military, fatcats and legacy politicians. but for that to happen it takes a politician with guile, the smarts . ik and tuq sadly are sticking to the script. Eid will determine everyones future.
Finally, a voice of reason. We need rational long term understanding of the issue, not an emotional short term adrenaline producing outlook. We should be able to see the wrongs and the rights as they are. The message of IK and TuQ is correct, as the author points out. Their methodology is wrong. Specially as they will probably not achieve anything in the end, and in the process lose whatever they have achieved till date. Emotions dont solve anything.
What IK and TUQ are saying is right. What IK and TUQ are doing is ALSO right.Without this the corrupt, powerful political dynastys will not allow the rotten system to change.Do you still have any illusions about any evolutionary change in the system after speeches made in the joint session of Parliament by the PM, leader of the Opposition and Parliamentarians?.
@Nadir:
2 wrong does not mean 1 right...you may well accept this VIP culture but it does not gel well with the culture that we all want to CHANGE..we are trying to copy, maintain & follow the your masters voice ( British ) culture, which the masters have themselves abandoned it in their own country. Well ! if we do like to copy them, why do we not copy their important values & other good things ?
@AVPMPolpot:
Your name betrays your Khmr Rouge mentality. Can you please spare this forum at least and spray your balderdash, piffle and juvenile "zingers" somewhere else? You add nothing to the debate, just your reflexive vitriol.
I am sure you are a Pakistan hating indian but at least pretend to have some decorum. YOu are giving a bad name to all indians.
Pakistanis are only fooling themselves if they think only politicians are milking Pakistan. Blame the real power that has put you in this poor state.
from comments I can clearly see ppl dont understand politics of imran khan, NS will never have 2013 election audit at any cost because it will uncover many faces also it will be very negative for pmln so NS will rather agree on mid terms instead of 2013 audit, and imran khan is already waiting for this opportunity, with election reforms already on table he wants to take the advantage in 2013 election , every party doing jalsas should make sense to people , on one hand IK thrilled the nation against status quo on other hand he is getting ready for mid terms that is his plan and going in right direction.
'both men succeed somehow in smashing the government and system...' You copped out Fahd, by using that word 'somehow'. Come on, we all now exactly how that would happen. There is only one way and that one way has happened thrice. And all that Imran and Qadri are saying and doing has to be evaluated against that inevitable truth. Expected better from you.
@Maria:
I am sick of Imran Khan’s Dharna and his silly U turns. Respect my vote. I don’t want PTI at all.
I am so sorry the Inqilabis are relieving themselves in front of your Whited Sepulchre called "Parlimaan." The treatment the "august" building is getting is well deserved and the stench produced actually matches the body smell of the odorous mafia polluting it from the inside.
You can be as sick as you want, the dharna SHALL continue. Respect our votes. We want voted for PTI and want it at all cost.
I liked the write up and respect your view......but if one thinks that CHANGE can be brought about through parliament through legislation he is being dishonest. 90% of parliament comprise of politicians who have grown FAT under this system.....WHY WOULD THEY VOTE AGAINST IT ?
"What Imran Khan and Tahir Qadri are saying is right. What Imran Khan and Qadri are doing is not right."
In one sentence, you have succinctly summarized what should be any sensible person's opinion on this fiasco. However, I will give IK and TuQ credit for giving these fat cats a much-needed rude wake-up call - Nawaz and Co. might not have to step down just yet, but by the next elections they won't even think about claiming Punjab as their sultanate, that in itself should be this Azadi March's biggest achievement.
In fact, to be honest, I doubt IK's ability to govern this country (even if he's several notches above the likes of Sharifs and PPP), but at least he'd have made way for someone better to replace him - and that is the real change we should all stand for.
Imagine if they had allowed the VIPs to board the plane, and then shamed them throughout the journey. And yes filmed the shaming process. Imagine the impact that would have had. Imagine that.
That would be too harsh for those who have self respect but majority of our parliamentarian didn't have any.
Yes, they need to walk away. And when do they, they will be clutching under their arms a bouquet of reforms that will surely weaken the fat cats and strengthen this nation.
All that they need to do is,
A. Demand Land Reforms.
B. Support Accountability under Article 6.
C. Demand repeal of the 2nd Amendment, Hudood Ordinance and Blasphemy Laws.
They will not only walk away with a bouquet of 'Reforms', they will walk away as True Democrats and Liberators.
Are they up yo it??
The day Corner Plots are available to you and me, VIP Culture would die a natural death.
This is very simple, in the last Government Mr. Gillani distributed 20 Crore ruppees to each MNA in the collation government to run the Government smoothly, remember when "Q" league joined in collation and Perviaz Elahi was awarded Dy. Premiership, Nawaz in opposition and was silent.(Muk Muka) Now when Nawaz came in Power they just paid Rs. 500 Billion to IPP's (Independent Power Plants) un-auditable never ever the Government has satisfactory reply in the Parliament that whom and why was paid in such an urgency, when Auditor General questioned that money the opposition summoned him in front of committee and asked to discuss that why and how he got an increase of Rs. 20,000 in his salary as RS. 20,000 increment was more important than Rs. 500 Billion?
"what they are saying is right. What they are doing is wrong....should pack up and take a load of reforms under their arm." That is simplistic conclusion from an excellent analysis. The stakes for the ruling elite are too high and one doesn't expect them to give up the advantages that even royalty in other lands would envy. Nothing concrete has been conceded so far. The fate of judicial commission report on model town massacre should be an eyeopener.
I totally disagree with the writer as we need Tarzans for these shameless people, otherwise, this circus which is called democratic system by our corrupt leaders will continue for next few decades and our country can not afford this for very long. The fortune of the people has to be changed through a peaceful and meaningful system revamp. The sit in by the two parties is a very small price which is being paid by the people who are now challenging the old system. Why there is so much hue and cry about the sit in as I think the price paid for awakening the people of Pakistan regarding their rights is really worth it and please let us know what other options could have been adopted to deal with these corrupt people who are controlling the system since last 68 years.
@Humza@Rao Amjad Ali: This happened for the first time in Pakistan and it is a routine that Aircraft are always delayed for the VVIP and it was consider very normal practice in our country, I didn't remember it was happened before that some shouting on Ex-Interior Minister that you are not more a Minister now and if you are we don't care ANY MORE, " WE DON"T CARE ANYMORE" should be a lesson learnt by every politician not politician but every Bureaucrat as Bureaucracy is more corrupt than politicians and they never brought to justice, we need to drag them to justice.
WE SHOULD STAND, WE MUST STAND, NOT FOR OUR SELF BUT FOR OUR CHILDREN AND COMING GENERATIONS.
The nation will revert back to the spoils of past. The dharna has to continue. We need all the Tarzans this great nation of ours have.
" What Imran Khan and Tahir Qadri are saying is right. What Imran Khan and Qadri are doing is not right." ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ IK sayings: Dont pay Power Bills Use Hawala NS made Billions od Dollars in EU
Allegations without proof, illegal utterings and personal attacks....how can what IK is saying be right?
New Status Symbol in Pakistan ++++++++++++++++++++++++ If u dont hv your Container u aint no body.!Pls note.
@Ranjha: The only mafia I see are the violent partiers of Imran Khan who think that they are above the law. They are intolerant and shoving their views down everyone's throat. I am sick of Imran Khan's Dharna and his silly U turns. He is surrounded by Shaikh Rasheed- enough said! Respect my vote. I don't want PTI at all.
A fair article theoratically but far removed from the ground reality . We all know that peaceful protests hardly move a leaf in Pakistan. Take the pressure off and it will be Business back to usual. People like you and i cursing the System in our drawing rooms. Writing articles with No effects . But feeling falsly secure in the Status qou..
Some how sitting so far away and unable to gauge the situation at D Chowk, it seems to me that they have cornered themselves in some what difficult situation, damned if you stay and damned if you leave. Since the parliament is supporting themselves by siding with NS, it becomes difficult to dislodge the prime minister and his minions and let us not forget that Shahbaz Sharif is being accused for ordering the massacre at Model Town Lahore, he must answer questions in the court of law.. The members in the Senate and NA are looking after themselves, they don't want to leave till they have recovered their investments in the elections by ten fold. A friend of mine the late Victor Vermillion used to say that could any one pull the pigs from the trough of sloth, so I say can any one pull these good for nothing dynastic politicians from the perks and privileges which they have bestowed upon themselves on the backs of this unfortunate nation. Thank you for such a thought provoking article and being a level headed person.
@Humza: This happened for the first time as far as I can remember and Nawaz Sharif's government is not a democratic one so nothing will ever change until the status quo isn't removed.
And then there is the possibility that the plane was not delayed because of Messrs. Malik and Vankwani after all. Delaying a plane is not quite as simple a matter as it might appear because it involves instructions from both PIA and CAA and submission of an incident report from the captain of the plane.
Indeed, the passengers did make an historical and compelling "statement", it must not be taken to be Biblical truth.
Don't forget that Ik & TUQ are also VVIPs.
It may be correct but one has to see what options they have with them
It's odd the way you make it sound like the crowd who were upset at Malik Rehman had anything to do with the current Dharnas in Islamabad. Such instances have happened many times before. Public opinion has long been against the sense of entitlement of some VIPs. Do you not remember the number of incidents where Generals, MNAs and MPAs have been publicly shamed after dealing harshly with servants, slapping bus officials, hitting pions, abusing minor officials and even police officers? The great thing about Pakistani society is that everyone knows such behavior is bad even though we all try to get away with VIP culture when we can. This is the opposite of many Arab states where meek civilians just have to accept that there is VIP order for so called Royals. So I do not give credit for Imran Khan or Tahirul Qadri for bringing any change - they have only brought mob politics which threatens to undue a developing democratic system. Unless we learn to work within a system by strengthening institutions and following imperfect laws and democracy the nation will descend to the level of Libya, Iraq or Syria. Just so you know, I too have a lot of great ideas about equality, ending corruption, paying taxes, improving education. If I can hire a few thousand protesters and march on the capital with sticks, will you say I am great too? No. There is no place for mob rule, no matter the intention. It only encourages more of the same and eventually total anarchy.
Together these two men have brought such Titans to their knees and forced them to acquiesce to just demands.
Fahd, you know I am great admirer of you. However, you are plain wrong in your assessment --I am afraid you really don't understand the evil we are pitted against.
How has the Sultanate of Sharif acquiesced to any just demand? All they have done is hidden behind an elaborate smoke screen of dialogue with many juntas, jirgas and committees involved, which have all failed to deliver a concrete, fair, transparent and implementable agreement to audit election results The minute the crowds walk way, the menacing clan reeking with revenge is going to be in full swing exacting "democratic" justice on the hapless participants with the courts sleeping conveniently in their barra darees.
Full speed ahead Imran! While some of us may be naive enough to consider the mafia defeated, we will not be fooled by the Machiavellian tactics of the giant squid wrapped around the face of Pakistan, sucking it slowly to death. The vote chors will only acquiesce to just demands after they are booted out of power. Period.
Yes Sir! That's what you both are__to the Lime lights, talk-of-the-town, gossip among the powerful's, Fear of the leaders, dream person of the idealist youth, mooning couple by the railway track.
Nawaz or Zardari, Fraud or Corruption, Courts or Foreign Powers don't disappear or bow to your lofty claims in few days or weeks. Everything takes time. You men sowed you seeds now please don't sit & watch the plant grow.
If this Final Advice don't make you look for your shoes, I must start a letter campaign myself against you guys.
Well! I give you THREE DAYS to pull out you camp Sire!
There job is half done and so is the commentary on these pages. The military and the generals are the VVVIP's whose protocols and excesses no one wants to question. Given its over reaching power and control over the economy to pretend that they do not exist is true hypocrisy. Corruption you say, General's of the NLC and Royal Palm Golf course scam are enjoying their retirement even after GHQ promised a swift investigation to the PAC four years ago. Who would question the protocol of corps commanders or the COAS?
