FAISALABAD:

A grade 9 student suffered two broken fingers in a beating by her teacher on Friday. Four others were punished for four hours. The district education officer has taken notice of the incident and has formed a team to investigate the complaint.

The incident took place in Chak 13 GB Saar at Murad Wala Government Girls High School.

Witnesses told The Express Tribune that a teacher got angry when some students came late to class.

They said she forced the five students into a ‘rooster’s squat.’

They said one of the girls told the teacher that corporal punishment was not allowed. They said the teacher got even angrier and beat her with a stick. They said she broke two of her fingers in the process.

They said after the girl fainted from the beating, the teacher fled. The principal then summoned her father.

Witnesses said other girls in the class were terrorised and remained fearful all day after the incident.

Muhammad Ismail, father of the student, told newsmen that his daughter later told him that she had begged the teacher for mercy but her plea was ignored. He said the school administration and district authorities should taken disciplinary action against the teacher.

“Our children go to schools to learn. Beating is not the same as teaching,” he said.

EDO Education Muhammad Mansha said a committee to investigate the incident had been formed. He said it would submit its report in two weeks.

He said the teacher would be taken to task if she was found guilty

As many as two dozen parents of students at the school staged a protest demonstration following the incident.

They stood next to the school and chanted slogans against the school administration.

They also demanded resignation of the principal and the teacher.

“Every few days one child or the other is beaten by their teacher on some petty issue,” said Ghulam Mustafa.

“What examples are these teachers setting for the younger generation?”
