KARACHI: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) on Thursday dissolved its Karachi Tanzeemi Committee (KTC), following MQM chief Altaf Hussain’s announcement in this regard last week.

On September 4, in a telephonic address to an MQM workers’ convention in Karachi, Altaf announced to dissolve his party’s KTC on September 11, while warning the party’s Rabita Committee to shape up if it wanted to avoid a similar fate.

Although an official statement is yet to be made in this regard, a senior party leader told The Express Tribune the committee has “unofficially” been dissolved.

The KTC’s office doors were locked this morning and its keys handed over to the Rabita Committee. The development takes place after Altaf received several complaints of the committee’s inefficiency by party workers.

Earlier, the word around 90 was that there are going to be some big changes in the MQM's organisational structure. It is expected that after dissolving the KTC, the party may revert to their initial set up – zonal committees.

The KTC was first formed in 2002 and is a body of 35 members. Its main purpose is to deal with the party’s organisational matters and structure.

MQM’s Tanzeemi and Rabita committees were last dissolved just after the 2013 general elections.
