Flood Warnings: Irrigation staff put on alert

KARACHI: The regulation director of the city’s irrigation department has directed the chief engineers of the department, Guddu barrage, Sukkur barrage left bank, Sukkur barrage right bank and Kotri barrage as well as the director of Sindh Irrigation and Drainage Authority, Hyderabad, to take all necessary measures to combat flooding as per the ‘bund’ (embankment) manual. He also told all field staff to remain vigilant and patrol the river embankments, especially at vulnerable points, to avoid untoward incidents due to the rainfall in the catchment areas of all the rivers. The director’s letter also said that a rise in discharge is expected at Guddu barrage on September 10 and a low to medium flood is expected there on September 11 and 12.
