Wales summit 2014: Pakistan, NATO share common goals, says envoy

Acting high commissioner in London says current govt is committed to a peaceful neighbourhood

As a partner in the international coalition against terrorism, Pakistan shares common objectives with Nato in promoting global peace, Pakistan’s acting High Commissioner in London Mohammad Imran Mirza.


Addressing the main session of the two-day Nato Summit 2014 held in Wales, the acting high commissioner commended Nato’s sustained engagement with Afghanistan and termed peace, stability and deepening of democracy in Afghanistan of vital interest to Pakistan.

Imran Mirza led the Pakistani delegation to the Nato Summit. Ukraine, Afghanistan and the future of the Nato alliance were at the top of the agenda of the summit.

Mirza said that the government of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was committed to the policy of a peaceful neighbourhood and attainment of socio-economic progress, and hoped for a similar reciprocity from Pakistan’s neighbours, including Afghanistan.

The acting high commissioner also attended a reception hosted by Prince Charles for world leaders attending the summit and a dinner hosted by UK’s Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg in honour of the heads of delegations.

Around 60 world leaders, including US President Barack Obama, British Prime Minister David Cameron, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Francois Hollande, Italian Premier Matteo Renzi, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, King Abdullah of Jordan and Nato Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen attended the summit.
