Christian woman gets death sentence for ‘blasphemy’

FIR accused her of passing derogatory remarks against Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), fine of Rs300,000 also imposed on her.

NANKANA SAHIB: A Christian woman was sentenced to death by an additional sessions court in Nankana Sahib for committing blasphemy on Monday.

Aasya, an Ittanwali resident, was accused of passing derogatory remarks against Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in an FIR registered with the Saddar police station by Qari Salim, a masjid imam. The FIR was registered on June 19, 2009. It was filed under Sections 295-B and C of the Pakistan Penal Code (both sections are punishable by life imprisonment or death sentence).

SK Shahid, her counsel, told The Express Tribune that he has filed an appeal with the Lahore High Court against the lower court’s judgement. He said that among other allegations, Aasya was accused of denying the prophet hood of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). “How can we expect a Christian to affirm to Muslim belief?” he asked. Besides sentencing Aasiya to death, Muhammad Naveed Iqbal, the ADSJ, also imposed a fine of Rs300,000 on her. According to a newspaper’s report, on hearing the news of the quarrel several Muslim men reached the spot and tried to attack Aasya. She fled the scene yet the mob followed her all the way upto her house, the report said. Ataul Saman, the National Commission for Justice and Peace (NCJP) publications head, said that the lower courts’ verdicts in blasphemy cases are mostly overturned by the high courts.

He said that their proceeding mostly take place under intense pressure. Locals, he said, gather outside the courts and chant slogans to pressure the judges into declaring the accused guilty of committing blasphemy. Saman added that NCJP research showed that up to 80 per cent of the time blasphemy charges are filed against people to settle personal scores.

My Grandfather joined the Pak Airforce the day it was formed and fought for the Green and the White part of the flag (the white part represents non muslims for those who are unaware). And what are we doing... hanging non-muslims for not believing in him? Did he hang the Meccan pegans when he conquered them? No! He forgave them all, even the wicked Hinda who chewed his uncle's liver! Treat the blashpemers with such love that they are convinced that they were wrong... tell them of the truth not by way of these draconian laws, but by way of your rightful character and by logical reasoning! And afterall, 'La Iqraaha Fiddeen' there is no compulsion in religion, let alone toward those who do not even belong to our religion! Christians are ahle kitaab and the closest to our religion according to the Quran and they deserve our deepest love! They can not only touch the water bowl but also pour and serve for you... Alas, poor Islam got stuck amoung these good-for-nothing mullas...

It is backed by political forces in Pakistan. Noone supports this draconian law and there is no justification for such a law in Islam. Friendly advice to you to please be cautious!

In the not too distant future Pakistan is going to end up an isolated pariah state with no financial assistance from the USA/World - even travel to Pakistan from the West is going to be prohibited. It's like that Christian pastor and his brother who were murdered in Faislabad last year - what kind of fools would honestly print a blasphemous pamphlet and put their names and addresses on it? Clearly a set-up. But that's beside the point. This law is a disgrace and marks Pakistan as a country with no concern for human rights. If Pakistan wants to play any role in the international community (aid, trade, geopolitics etc.) then it must meet international standards of human rights. As long as this absurd law is in place, it is manifestly failing to do so.

If the lady has showed disrespect then court i think has given the right verdict. In the constitution of 1973 Qaadianis were given the tag of non muslims as they dont believe in Holy Prophet and thats why Christians are Christians. However I would ask you if there are not countless Hadiths which show that the Prophet and Islam also bore abuses against his person by forebearance. There is no capital punishment for blasphemy stated in the Quran. The basis for this law seems to be against the very ethos of Islam, morality and reasonableness.

But the damage being done to the social fabric of multi-religious Pakistan by such outrageous decisions is huge, not to mention its human rights record. It is time to drop the blasphemy law and spend time on issues that really affect the quality of life: institutional corruption across the board, phantom schools and teachers, half-baked madrasa curricula, a puny taxation system, along with all the other issues like sanitation, security, education, rule of law and accountability, inflation and so on.

There are laws against the contempt of court. Isn't that similar to the blasphemy laws? Why do all so called "enlightened" people want to repeal this law? Why doesn't anyone say it is the abuse of the law that should be stopped and people should come up with suggestions which will ensure that an innocent person is not persecuted through any law. The point that I want to make is that even the laws that are made against terrorists and burglars, can become a nuisance if they're abused. We might as well do away with the whole judicial and police system and repeal all laws if we are worried that someone may misuse them.

In Islam, even a thief cannot have his hand cut off if he is suffering from poverty or there are other extenuating circumstances. Islam is not laws and rituals disconnected with morality. The laws and rituals are to reinforce morals. However in Pakistan, where morality is no longer understood, what use is this empty emphasis on laws and rituals for their own sake. This form of religion is just another form of false religiosity, even idolatory - the sort of religiosity that Islam came to reform with its supreme emphasis on morality. This poor woman was likely provoked by the fact that the other women were not prepared to accept her carrying water. God knows what other daily insults and injustice she faced as a Christian. We all know how Christians are looked down upon in Pakistan. Even if the evidence was irrefutable of her blaspheming against the Prophet (pbuh), Islam or the Prophet are not threatened by someone's anger or insults. It is only our false pride that takes offense and it is our Islamic duty to keep that under control. This sentence and the circumstances that surround the conviction reflect Mullah Islam and Mullah justice. Pakistan was not created for this and we must rise up against these types of outrage.

Islam is being paraded around the world to be barbaric and inhumane and these laws give all the ammunition to the critics. Can the judge give even one example where the Holy Prophet(saw) gave a sentence to people who abused him? The Holy Prophet(saw) even led the funeral prayers of Abdullah bin Ubay bin Sulul, the most harsh and bad-mouthed hypocrite of all times. The Holy Prophet(saw) understood Islam much better than everyone and if he did not give any punishment for blasphemy, then who are we to invent these in Islam. At the very least this qari needs to be deprived of all his property (including his home), the property auctioned & the proceeds to go the state for all costs incurred due to irrational & wrong claims.

The people of Taif were not destroyed, Hinda was forgiven and the known munafaqeen's funeral prayers was lead by the Holy Prophet (saw) the rehmat lil alameen.

Why would a Christian affirm the Prophethood of Muhammad? If they did, they wouldn’t be Christian.

Rightly or wrongly Islam has an image issue and these incidents reinforce that negatively. Except few muslim countries, from SA to Pakistan muslims seem to be so rigid and narrow minded. People of other religion have the right to disbelieve, criticize or have their own take about their God which I think is a healthy way to go.

Does our justice system not require adequate facts? And where are those facts? Having said this mean, we are tremendously fail to have fair justice system! Why don't Muslims remember how much emphasis the Prophet laid on forgiveness? They can verbally defend the Prophet but have no right to attack anyone or take their life. All those who are commenting here should first have the true knowledge of the topic under discussion. Its nothing to do with man or woman, Christians, Muslim or anyone else, its the law and it applies same way to all of us, Pakistani citizen, the woman who did this, if found guilty deserves death penalty and if not, then of course this would be a crime. Everyone who has the access to the internet or can type a few words in English should try to remain within limits. Who we are to comment on the country, its system and its laws, we dont have the basic knowledge of these complex subjects.. just to give an impression of being knowledgeable and minded we breach many limits and this makes us not educated but a shame for our country...
