Indignant Nisar attempts to clear the air

Nisar will attempt to rebuff allegations Aitzaz made on the parliament floor

Abdul Manan September 06, 2014

LAHORE: Despite Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Asif Ali Zardari saying that his party was ready to 'move on' and the prime minister himself apologising to PPP Senator Aitzaz Ahsan for his interior minister's rant on September 4, the saga looks set to continue as Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan plans to address the media in a press conference on Saturday.

A lot of backroom activity has taken place since the spat began, including a one-on-one meeting between Nisar and Nawaz earlier today.

Sources within the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) said that Nisar was quizzed by the prime minister on Friday evening about his statement against Aitzaz. Nisar maintained that it was Aitzaz's decision to extend his allegations outside of the Parliament floor.

Beyond the back and forth, Aitzaz questioned Nisar's loyalty, not only to Nawaz but to parliament itself while he had the floor on Friday.

“The interior minister is a snake up your sleeve," Ahsan said. "That man (Nisar) has breathed life into the dying forces which are trying to oust you,” he added, warning the prime minister to be wary of people who bring their leaders at a crossroads. He also referred to Nisar's role in 1999 when “the prime minister was handcuffed even as he flew out of the country but there was one man, (Nisar) who was being sent breakfast from GHQ even when he was under house arrest.”

Sources said that the spat began when Ahsan talked about Nisar's late brother and his role in the 1999 coup outside the Supreme Court on Thursday.

According to sources, tonight's press conference is meant to clarify his role - and his brother's - and reaffirm his loyalty the party.

Not taking any chances, sources also said that Nisar sent a draft of Nisar's prepared statement to Nawaz for his approval.

During Aitzaz's speech on Friday, Nawaz asked Nisar to sit next to him, and placed a hand on Nisar, evidently to try to deter him from replying to Aitzaz. Despite the attempts, Nisar got up to reply, only to be thwarted by the Azaan call.

Aetzaz Ahsan got a very good chance to boast about himself which he did most of the time while he was on the floor. There was no need for him to mention the details of what had happened in the past. When he did not like to be labelled as a bad person why on earth did have to do that to Choudhry Nisar. I am sure Nisar was asked to mud sling Aetzaz by Nawaz Sharif & now Nawaz is trying to stop him from calling a press conference.
