PESHAWAR:

The City police visited mosques at Friday prayers to invite citizens to use the newly-established dispute resolution councils (DRC). On the directives of IGP Nasir Khan Durrani, City SP, City SDPOs and SHOs addressed prayer congregations, stated a hand out issued on Friday.

The exercise was carried out as a part of a mass awareness and contact campaign launched by the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) police to apprise the public about the utility and efficacy of DRCs. DRCs are meant to facilitate citizens in the prompt resolution of trivial disputes; an alternative to expensive and protracted litigation.

Addressing members of the community at mosques, officials spoke about the nature, function and performance of DRCs. They explained the DRC was based on the concept of the “restorative justice system” as well as the spirit of the traditional jirga—providing a cost-effective platform or forum.

Participants were encouraged to spread the word about the councils.
