LAHORE:

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Punjab president Mian Manzoor Ahmed Wattoo said on Thursday the party was striving hard to resolve the current political impasse before the Chinese president’s visit to Pakistan.

In a statement, Wattoo urged the protesting political parties to show flexibility in their stance. “Give and take is the essence of negotiations,” he said.

He said stubbornness never yielded good results. He said politicians had to make compromises for the continuity of democratic process.

“Politics is the art of possible. The politicians who fail to make this happen show their ineptitude in the art of politics.”

Wattoo urged the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) leadership to accept the government’s offer of forming a judicial commission to investigate the allegations of rigging.

“Leaders of parliamentary parties should guarantee non-interference [in the commission proceedings] by the prime minister. PTI chairman Imran Khan should accept parliamentary leaders as guarantors,” the PPP leader said.

Wattoo said he was concerned by the language that Pakistan Awami Tehreek leader Tahirul Qadari had used against Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Syed Khurshid Shah.

He said Shah was not only a valuable asset for the PPP but also for the country’s parliamentary politics. Wattoo praised Shah for his role to help lessen political tensions in the country.

He welcomed the resumption of negotiations between the protesting parties and the government. He said hoped for an early political solution to the present stalemate.

“The nation is on the tenterhooks for the last many days and passing through an ordeal in the face of uncertainty.”
