The problem with all of those yelling themselves hoarse demanding a ‘Naya Pakistan’ using ‘Purana Pakistan’ tactics is that they do not seem to realise that they are already in the new Pakistan. In this new Pakistan, the establishment appears to have learnt just enough economics to realise that living without US support for Pakistan is, for the moment, impossible and thus an outright coup is out of the question. And once the military lost its biggest weapon, a democratically elected government can certainly be distracted from governing (on the off chance that it is ever in the mood to do so), but it cannot actually be dislodged by anyone but the voters themselves.
Let us play out all of the scenarios and see how feasible they are. Exactly what threat will the establishment, or its PTI-PAT allies, use to force Nawaz to accept any of their demands? A coup? Clearly not. If not that, then what, exactly? What does Nawaz stand to lose by standing firm, keeping Parliament by his side and telling the protestors that they have had their day but now they must go home? He has already had the Model Town FIR registered, and may have to hold elections on a few seats that will do nothing to seriously dent his parliamentary majority. Does anyone think the protestors can extract anything more than that?
I know what you are thinking: what if the protestors do not leave? Will he not have to bow to sustained public pressure? Will the media circus not force Nawaz’s hand? There is a very simple answer to that too. The protestors, who are dwindling in strength since reaching their peak two weeks ago, will leave once the television audience of ARY News starts getting bored, which it already has. The Pakistani television audience, like any other audience, has a short attention span. The saga in Islamabad is no longer entertaining. It is getting repetitive. Ratings will start to drop, the advertisers will pull their money and the television shows will move on to the next shiny object to distract the viewers with. Without a large television audience to play to, Imran Khan and Tahirul Qadri would be forced to abandon their Quixotic quest. All Nawaz has to do is wait them out till that point, which is likely not more than a week or two away.
But let us suppose that the worst case scenario happens and that somehow, magically, Nawaz is forced out. What then? One theory being bandied about is fresh elections, rigged for a PTI victory. But this hypothesis is highly implausible for two reasons. Firstly, the establishment may have an interest in maintaining its power, but it is not stupid. It is highly unlikely that anyone who matters in the establishment wants Imran Khan as prime minister. But even if they do, how exactly does the establishment plan on rigging the elections in Punjab without the help of the bureaucracy?
Punjab’s bureaucrats have just spent the past six years witnessing the rewards one gets to one’s career for being loyal to the Sharifs and the punishment one has to suffer for helping any of their rivals. Does the establishment seriously think it will get any cooperation from civil servants in the largest province in the country? Do they really expect to beat the only man in Pakistani history who was the target of a coup and live to not only tell the tale, but become prime minister again? Which lunatic bureaucrat would take the establishment’s orders against Nawaz? And without massive anti-PML-N rigging in Punjab, how exactly will the PTI be brought to power?
In short, did the powers that be actually think this through before setting in motion this set of events? Conventional wisdom holds that the current protest saga was initiated to cut Nawaz’s power down to a size the military is comfortable with. Unfortunately, in using Imran Khan, they went with the ‘all-in’ strategy, though perhaps inadvertently. There is something admirable about that level of conviction, certainly. But the problem with the all-in strategy is that you had better have the cards to win big, or else lose horribly. Nawaz Sharif should stop panicking. His opponents are all in and do not have the cards to pull off a win.

@Ali S: Spot on. Good suggestion to IK to do something positive. Thanks.
@Kingdom of Shareef:
The fact that IK is standing with a crowd of people in front of PM House and not getting rained with automatic weapons gunfire is proof that a functional, tolerant democracy is present in this country.
We need a slow, somewhat painful evolution, not revolution, to bring lasting changes - just like every other democratic country. The good news is that now the military and civilian setups know their limits - they're not directly confronting each other for power and, a few years down the road, will be able to focus more on core issues.
I think right now the most effective, practical agenda that IK could pursue would be to demand local government bodies - this way, major urban cities (where the most crucial PTI vote bank is) would be able to govern themselves better and more autonomously and choose their own leaders.
The only reason Pak Army did not step in to takeover is because US and EU view Pakistan differently after Abbotabad. Military coups will not happen in Pak anymore unless the US changes its mind. I can't see that happening.
With electoral reforms, induction of biometric systems, corrupt bureaucracy won't be able to influence elections.
@Hash: There's a fly in your ointment. Remember ZAB ? He overcame similar odds. It will be actually easier for IK to win in a transparent election because people have been made aware.
@Syed Sharfuddin: "....Why did we see former President Zardari with his son in Beijing lately? ...."
Zardari is a businessman, same as his daddy was. He wants a piece of action too.
Solid analysis!! How can the military establishment ever support Imran Khan who has been calling it a mercenary, fighting for US Dollars. He has also levied a baseless allegation against the Army Chief and ISPR had to categorically deny Imran Khan's irresponsible statement.
People won't get bore if this country remains stuck on this pallet. One theory is to nominate ch nisar,or ahsan iqbal as pm, one theory is giving them no coverage would actually force the pti supporters to move out and see what is happening? one theory is india will avenge their unfair partition of land & attack pakistan? one theory is india is forced by american, chinese investors to make pakistan so weak that they can will be forced to let them use our resources unfairly?
the acceptance of five point drama,is what the govt is doing govt is not telling people about indian/afghan/china policies of using the soil of pakistan as raw material & chewing it out? govt doesn't tell about their ravish needs & lifestyle govt doesn't tell increment in e.prices 21 types of taxes are imposed on people & it's internationally illegal to impose gat/vat/gst at same time, property taxes? govt doesn't tell the progress of our nuclear weapons? govt doesn't tells about counter flood policies? govt doesn't tell people about rigged elections? govt doesn't tell about the infair delay+distribution of budget? govt doesn't brief us about anything? ONLY BLAME GAME IS GOVERNENCE AND THIS WILL HAVE TO END largest province is balochistan, govt's have stragically forced people to shift outside of it you are on international establishment agenda
It is exactly what I said before the drama started. You ask me next month who is the prime minister and I would say Nawaz Sharif, you ask me the next year who is the prime minister and I would say Nawaz Sharif, you ask me 4 years from now and my answer would be Nawaz Sharif.
What message do I have from Tsunami Khan "Know your damn role and shut your mouth"
Excellent analysis!
Actually people we and our forefathers, have always been slaves, the nature of subcontinent people is thus, they have always been ruled upon.
We have never known what freedom is, we just think that we are free.
While in truth we are still slaves
IK is a foolish man, immature politician, no doubt about it.
He is trying to make us free, he is trying to give our future generations a Naya Pakistan. He is speaking for justice, equality, democracy, respect/
What a immature man he is!!
Shame that Zardari ruled us for 5 years he deserved 50 years.
Writers asks politely that What Next?
Well here's what is next.
The very exsistence of IK today is due to the fact that pople of Pakitan, atleast some people, have understood the game of power democracy for family welfare in Pakistan.
Nawaz has his daughter and nephew ready to slave our future generation, Zardari has his son lined up.So do have other politicians, across Pakistan.
IK however, is the hope to break through them all.
One wonders how could you be amongst top 10 investors in any economic power like UK, but the fact is that this is true.
Before you jump up to the horse of Economic Growth, you must understand that if the difference between the rich and poor increases in the society
They are bound for a revolution, because while people die of draugth, riches of the country bath in milk.
Just ask yourself one simple question, if your Mother, Sister, Brother or someone special is gunned down in the middle of the road today.
Do you really think you will get justice, do you really think that. You cant even meet your MNA, his guards will toss you out his house, if you don't believe, try this!
We have become tolerant towards others, we have blinded ourselves for our interests only.
But the fact is that we all wait for our turns individually sooner or latter we all shall get our turn and than we will understood, when there was a chance we did not stood up fort others.
for those who Think NS is the way out.
Please review his history from 1985 till date. 31 years long year in power dear ones.
He has done everything, Attacking, Parliment, Supreme Court, Calling Pakistan and India a mere difference of some lines are some recent examples.
I and my family support IK, till our very death.
Insha Allah time will tell, Who IK really is.
If Nawaz Sharif's winning means that he remains Prime Minister.......then it's a pyrrhic victory indeed.
Won?... Who said? .. His panic, his blunders, his incompetency to handle situation, economy disaster and his desperation is his victory.
@Saleem by that logic people of KP will be dragging IK and his followers out of the assembly pretty soon. Please tell us about the grand achievements of PTI in KP during the last 1.5 years? And end to corruption in 90 days? Universal health and education? Zero crime? End to militancy? Double digit GDP growth? Lower unemployment? What exactly has IK and his party accomplished in KP that gives them the right to storm Islamabad and demand that IK should be installed as the PM?
Good analysis. However, it is not about winning or losing of political parties to be able to govern Pakistan. Even if PML-N survives this crisis which it will, PML-N is most likely to lose the next general election because it has come out bruised and embarrassed on the way its governance or the lack of it has been highlighted in the just-concluded joint session of Parliament. If this hypothesis is correct then the winner in the next election will be PPP - the same party that disappointed Pakistanis after ruling for 5 years and not doing as much as was expected of it after the end of military rule in civilian clothes. So even in 2018 you will be back to square one - standing all right but not moving to address issues (reform of the electoral commission, reform of the judiciary especially at lower echelons, devolution and local government elections, rights of minorities, graft and favours along filial, ethnic and tribal lines , lack of transparency in decision making, lack of trust in institutions of State, corruption in public office, dynastic politics et al - , which IK ans TQ highlighted irrespective of the tactics or legitimacy they had for doing so. In the end, Pakistan lost many hunmdred working hours of GDP, investment and production. Pakistan also lost a good visitor , namely the President of China - the country which has agreed to invest heavily in a development corridor from Pubjab to Baluchistan and with which more investment agreements are yet be signed. But then who is in charge of Pakistan China Economic relations? Is it Foreign Office, Planning Division or CM Punjab? Why did we see former President Zardari with his son in Beijing lately? There are too many questions and too few answers.
Spot on! Democratic institution gaining ground in Pakistan ironically when the US (the great self styled upholder of democracy) is not in the picture anymore
Wishful thinking. At one point you think Establishment is behind Imran and at another point you opine that the establshment is against Imran. What exactly you want to imply?.What about the senior most Police Officers who have refused to act against the gathering in Lahore and Islamabad?.They do not seem to be lunatic.Failing writ of Nawaz Sharif government is pointing towards an end opposite to your analysis.
The best piece on the situation.
Very good, a cut to the chase analysis. The establishment is no longer in a position to organize coups, especially against a government that came to power in a largely free and fair election (with foreign, impartial observers). The next best thing is to cut NS's wings so that he does not follow an independent agenda. especially one that would directly affect the establishment, such as seek peace with India. I agree with the author that by standing firm (too quietly, maybe), and not losing, NS has won this round.
Very true. This Op Ed is a lesson for Pakistani journalists specially the retired army high officials who try to indulge in journalism. After Kerry/Luger Bill, there is no chance that the US would ever support a military coup in Pakistan. With the US aid gone the army would be in desperate shape. That is why they had strongly opposed that bill and tried to convict HH who had a lot to put conditions in the bill. The best scenario for army is to make Sharif brothers circus tigers and continue to enjoy their powers, wealth and perks.
Cold and factual analysis. Reminds me 'some people can be made fool some time but not all the people all the time'. people have realised the trap of establishment has really done no good to their health, education, business etc.
this review is biased to give support to corrupt Nawaz , because if anything protesters are proving adamant to get their demands accepted , and Nawaz is afraid as oppositon is making its grip strong around Nawaz's govt. Please check your facts before you make an opinion.
It is not that simple. That is what Imran trying to tell that the bureaucracy is treated like personal servants. and that is why they are doomed to fail, because they don,t allow any opposition to work and people start looking towards army.
"What Next ?" perfect question to all those protesters. I was always thinking that most of them coming to protest might not have any work or might be on part time jobs. Definitely they are not working in good and responsible jobs where money matters.
The writer like rest of Pakistani seem to have a short memory .....we did see three police officers refusing to take govt orders ....so saying bureaucracy will not dare to against govt wishes does not hold
Secondly I assume the writer is just watching television and making an analysis....only yesterday it was raining like any thing in Islamabad (those there would confirm) and people were there who had to be there .....
A fatalistic article at best, wrapped around speculation. Just because the writer has given up doesn't mean the rest of Pakistan has to or should.
Dekhto raho bhai, this isn't over yet.
It was worth a try but if the Pakistani people want the status quo to continue, then good look to them. Let's see how the Model Town FIRs proceed and let's see how Free and Fair elections are implemented. This was the chance for real change, let's see if they follow through on all with NS in charge. You must at least get Shabaz to leave office due to Model Town situation.
Great and I suppose you are one if those that are okay with a murdering CM a lying PM and rigged elections . Sorry sir we are not . Win is indeed in Allah's hands so dont agree with you there. Tomorrow it could be your family the victim of state terrorism donot forget .#gonawazgo
Nawaz Sharif might have won for now but I hope he has learned a lesson from all this. People voted him in power, not his family. He better learn to separate power an family - starting from his daughter. He needs to start filling up posts on merit, not from his relatives. He needs to reshuffle his cabinet and get rid of dead wood like Khawaja Asif, Abid Sher Ali, and Ishaq Dar. And last but not least, make things transparent.
If Nawaz Sharif has not learned any thing from this turmoil then it will be better for him to leave with some dignity rather than getting drag out. There is blood in people's eyes and they will no longer tolerate incompetence from him or his cronies. They want to see less talk and more action - deliver what you been promising.
Just one month ago PTI was at its peak of popularity. Pakistan's first so-called "democratic" party ruined its image due to its autocratic and quixotic leader who couldn't decide on what he wanted apart from his conviction that he should have been the PM. PTI's democratic claims are bogus. It is led by a dictator and his assistant The Fake Sheikh.
By far the most accurate analysis in last 1 month. Game is over.
