Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) IGP Nasir Khan Durrani urged all sub-divisional police officers (SDPO) to take an interest in recently introduced technological initiatives such as the vehicle verification system, geo tagging and cellular forensics to reduce crime rates in their respective jurisdictions.

He was addressing the first ever conference of SDPOs from across the province at the Central Police Office (CPO).

Situation overview

The conference was convened to review the overall security situation, performance of SDPOs, and the status of the K-P police. It aimed to improve the efficiency of the K-P police. Additional IGP special branch, additional IGP investigation, DIG headquarters, the CCPO, DIG operations, AIG operations and SDPOs from across the province were in attendance.

The IGP was briefed by the AIG operations about the performance of every SDPO on crime prevention, detection, and the progress on special initiatives undertaken by the K-P Police. The IGP was also briefed by AIG special branch about the overall security situation of the province and developments in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas.

Durrani said SDPOs were the backbone of the police; “the highest levels of professionalism is expected from them”. The K-P police chief asked the officers to ensure all citizens are treated with respect and courtesy.

Updating knowledge

He said policemen need to be proficient in newly-enacted laws such as the Protection of Pakistan Act 2014, K-P Restriction of Rented Buildings Security Act 2014, K-P Restriction of Hotels Security Act 2014 and Anti-Terrorism Act 1997. He added these laws needed to be implemented in letter and spirit.

During the meeting, the participants were told about intelligence-led policing and hot spot policing, their efficacy and how these are currently being followed by the K-P police.

The participants were told to launch a series of search and strike operations across the province with special focus on hostels, hotels and sarais (old inns). Field officers were told to keep a close watch on individuals residing in rented accommodations and those previously charged with cases of terrorism.

The IGP said failure to comply with operational guidelines and policy guidelines, issued by the CPO, would be strictly dealt with.
