In the process, he reinforced his own stature as a dissident, loyal only to democracy, the Constitution, and the state, while reiterating that it isn't Imran Khan that should be scrutinised, but Parliament.
In a fiery half hour speech that was at times long winded, Hashmi hardly reserved his ire for one party, or one person in particular. In fact, his speech was a harsh reminder to the entire Parliament of the danger it is currently in.
Hashmi began with historic precedent. He talked about the abuse that Parliament had sustained over the years by military coups and despotic leaders. He talked about how Ghulam Muhammad, after dismissing the Constituent Assembly in 1954 "buried" Pakistan's first Constitution, "Pakistan's best," according to Hashmi.
He also displayed a fair degree of remorse over Pakistan's actions that eventually led to the creation of Bangladesh by implying that a strong Parliament ought to have accommodated Sheikh Mujibur Rehman, the leader of East Pakistan's Awami League.
But his anger was reserved for both, powers within Parliament and without. He issued a stern warning to the MNAs and Senators attending the joint session, including Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif himself.
"The system to make and break governments from the inside exists. It exists," he said to applause. He wasn't just referring to conspiracies, but the alleged neglect and frivolity with which parliamentarians, including the prime minister himself, have treated Parliament.
Banging on his desk in anger, he said, "In 14 months, why didn't the prime minister go to the Senate? Why didn't he go? [The senate] is not a joke."
"When you ignore the Senate, when you ignore the National Assembly, you're going to hear voices that say, 'bring the walls down'" Hashmi said, alluding to the protests that have engulfed the capital for the past few weeks.
He took pains to establish his own credentials as a maverick, and as someone who spoke truth to power. He alluded to the seven years he spent in jail, and his history of dissent against party and national leaders, including Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, Ziaul Haq, Nawaz Sharif, and most recently, Imran Khan.
"I told him, Khan Sahib, you've got the entire country standing on its feet. In two or three years, elections will be the solution. But you, you're suggesting we demolish first [forcing Nawaz to resign], and then come forward?"
"I believe in one struggle, and that is the people's struggle," he said. He framed the Model Town violence on June 17, in which 14 people were killed, as one of those struggles, and unleashed a torrent of anger over delay in its investigation.
"People ask me when I've spoken now and not before. I have been fighting against every fault that I have found in my party." After coming out strongly against Imran on Sunday, Hashmi all but ended his association with the PTI.
"When the people gathered outside to destroy these walls, I asked Khan Sahib. I asked him, 'how can you stand for this? Their demands are against what you stand for."
"All my life, I will always be looking for the way to Parliament. The day I forget it, I'll be lost," he said.
Hashmi lamented a weak Parliament throughout his speech, and blamed his fellows MNAs for not doing enough to solve Pakistan's problems.
"There are people leaving Fata right now without clothes on their backs. Who's going to help them? This parliament is meant to help them," Hashmi said, visibly incensed.
"But every time a prime minister is elected, the prime minister himself wants Parliament to just die."
He charged MNAs themselves too. "What kind of people are these? What kind of MNAs?"
"Today's Parliament is not a parliament to solve people's problems. We just come here, take our seats and seize them," he said.
Ending with a flourish, he said, "I hand in my resignation. I'm going back to the Pakistani people."
Hashmi concluded his speech to a loud applause, as a beaming Nawaz Sharif rose to greet him, before the speaker adjourned the session until Wednesday.

So happy Javed Hashmi has seen the light. It was very worrying when he joined PTI initially. Lets hope Jehangir Tareen and Asad Omer follow suit. Shah Mahmood Qureshi just loves the limelight so no hope for him sadly - although he is a fine statesmen!!!
@LHR: Are you really out of your senses or acting like one. Wake up, you have reached Jeddah.
@JB: They had many internal problems but NS always respected Javed Hashmi. Apparently according to sources NS didn't treat Javed Hashmi right.
Excellent Sir, Brave man, Pakistan needs people like you Sir [Javed Hashmi] for prosperity and development of the country. I salute you for revealing truth to the nation. As you mentioned, Prime Minister must attend the sessions of Assembly so that he must know critism of members, problems of people, and suggestions to help people. Government posts must be advertised and merit based selections can save the country, please avoid appointing family, friends and friends of friends.
@AIR: yes a wise enemy (that is Hashim sahb) is better than a foolish friend (that is Shaikh Rashid).
Good speech by Javed Hashmi. He is a brave man of principles. Jeo Javed Hashmi.. Perhaps, this is the time for all Pakistani politicians to reflect on themselves, and ask themselves what they have done for the country, and how they could make life better for the people. We need to learn to respect each other and show patience, tolerance and understanding to each other. God bless Pakistan, its beautiful land, and its people..
What a repulsive man! True Trojan horse planted by Non League. Imran Khan continues to place his faith in lowly people who are bred within the corrupt system with the "democratic" cover and needs to wisen up!
@AIR If a planted man can be elected as the president of the rival party so that he could be used in a time of need like this one then I guess PTI should pack itself and go home because if God forbids this party comes to power, who knows they elect the president of the country too who could be planted by the state enemies. I hope PTI could stop acting like cry babies and blaming everyone else than themselves and start taking some personal responsibility for a change.
I think Javed Hashmi did the right thing. It was pretty obvious from day 1 IK n TUQ were following a script. It is not possible for IK or TUQ to get so far without any strong backing.
What a man. He killed the hopes of our establishment. No extension to isi chief or the core commanders. Ik failed them miserably...
@S Chaudhury: @Shafaq: Assuming what you think is true proves that goof Imran Khan has been outsmarted by Nawaz Sharif. if so, we cannot afford to have such a goof ever become our Prime Minister. Long Live Pakistan.
"...Imran Khan is a cricketing hero but a political zero...." words of Benazir Bhutto, a wise woman no doubt who gave her life for democracy
Hashmi Sb !You are a light in darkness of Pakistan indeed, but a threat for those who deem Pakistan a video game monitor.Upbraiding Sheikh Rasheed ,you have used offensive words for Kashmiris, anyhow, your todays dauntless truth is laudable. The only prayer by a Kashmiri for you is,May you live long.
Well done Hashmi mission complete....Nawaz Shareef
@AIR: Hashmi was the only one who tried to talk some sense into Imran Khan but was unsuccessful. Look at where Imran Khan and his party are now. Discredited and scoffed at by the majority of Pakistanis who see nothing but violence and Imran Khan's ego that knows no bounds. A true friend is someone who tells you the truth and gives good advice even if it isn't what you want to hear. Hashmi tried but Imran Khan was too stubborn and obsessed with his own views.
He attacked the supreme court.....
Does he still beleive that NS should resign or even the fiery speaches he delivered to the dharna for 15 days in which he demanded NS's resignation were forced by IK
It seem, that Hasmi has been send in PTI by PMLN, to make problem in PTI...
After such serious allegations IK must resign from party and hand over reigns of PTI to JH. JH can take PTI to transforming it into a political democratic party from currently a club with nach gana during dharna party
I dont see any issue with this as PTI is not IK's fifedom as claimed by IK or is it?. IK seems more happy in TUQ's company so he can join PAT at grass root level to bring inqalab hopefully.
Hashmi back in N league after completing espionage mission
I am confused...was NS happy that Hashmi criticised the Parliament and NS?
A glamorous exit, though he added many buts and ifs to his legacy. Many might not agree but he was a positive Angry man for PTI. Every power house always need an inside critics if it want to keep itself on the right path.
He never remained loyal with any of the political party. I must say he was planted by PML (N).
At the end of his speech, a beaming Nawaz Sharif rose to greet Hashmi.
Well done Hashmi, you've done your job "KNIFE IN THE BACK".
Lessen for IK, A wise enemy is better than a fool friend.
An speech I will remember. There are only handful of leaders in the subcontinent for whom the country is first always and every time. There feet are always on ground. Salute.
Javid Hashmi is a man of principles. He is too good for Pakistani Politics. I always will have a great respect for your Sir. Long Live Hashmi Long live Pakistan.
