KARACHI:
Justice (retd) Sair Ali has resigned as the chief election commissioner of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the summary of his notice has been sent to Prime Minister (PM) Nawaz Sharif.
The Express Tribune has reported earlier that the board had balked at Sair’s demands of an exorbitant salary – equivalent to that of top team management officials Waqar Younis – and other perks to continue working as the election commissioner.
After the report was published, Sair immediately decided to quit the job and submitted his resignation.
It has been learnt that Sair wanted close to Rs1.5 million, including all the perks and pension that is given to a Supreme Court judge after retirement.
He would have become one of the highest paid official, earning around Rs2.5 million monthly in cash, perks and benefits.
“The summary of Sair’s resignation has been sent to PCB Patron Nawaz Sharif and he has been asked to nominate someone else in his place,” confirmed a PCB official.
Governing body approves 2014-15 budget
The PCB’s governing board has approved the budget for the financial year 2014-15 during the 30th Board of Governors (BoG) meeting at the Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore.
Members held discussions on the Pakistan Super League (PSL) as its bidding is yet to be opened despite the lapse of the August 18 deadline.
The PCB had earlier stated that the decision for the overall rights of the PSL will be taken on August 8, but later extended the announcement by 10 days.
It has been also decided to call the bidders – Aman Foundation and Haier Electronics – for a meeting with PCB Chairman Shaharyar Khan.
“After detailed deliberations and discussions on the PSL, a decision was arrived at unanimously to invite the bidders for a meeting next week with the PCB Chairman, and a decision will thereafter be conveyed vis-a-vis the fate of the bidding process,” read the official PCB press release.
Additionally, various committees were formed.
The Executive Committee will be headed by former PCB chief Najam Sethi, while its members include PCB chief operating officer Subhan Ahmed and chief financial officer Badar M Khan.
A Cricket Committee, for which Regional President of the Islamabad Cricket Association Shakil Sheikh has been requested to look after, was also formed. He will be assisted by former Test cricketers Iqbal Qasim, Intikhab Alam, Zakir Khan and Haroon Rashid.
The Grassroots Committee headed by President of Karachi City Cricket Association Ijaz Faruqi includes Gul Zada, Javed Zaman, Haroon Rashid and Shaheen Khan.
