A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed to establish 63 Reverse Osmosis (RO) plants in the metropolis.
The signing took place between the Commissioner of Karachi Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui and Saylani Welfare International Trust President Yousuf Lakhani during a ceremony held at the Commissioner Office on Wednesday.
The ceremony was attended by Additional Commissioner Muhammad Aslam Khan, director of Planning and Development Muhammad Saqib, Director Media office of Commissioner Karachi Shabih Siddiqui, Javaid Razi, Muhammad Ali Lakhani and Jameel Raza of Saylani Welfare International Trust.
While addressing the occasion, Siddiqui said that water is a basic necessity, informing that Saylani Welfare is setting up RO plants in areas of the city from where the complaints of water shortage were received and for the purpose, a piece of land will be provided by the commissioner’s office. Yousuf Lakhani said that a single RO plant needs 100 to 300 yards of land and an expenditure of Rs160,000-180,000.
RO is a water purification technology that uses a semi-permeable membrane. In reverse osmosis, an applied pressure is used to overcome osmotic pressure, a colligative property, driven by chemical potential, a thermodynamic parameter.

Cost effective water treatment is usually done on large scale utilizing basic filtration combined with chlorination. RO may require smaller footprint but it's expensive/inefficient and likely inappropriate for country with growing population and limited financial resources.
