JAMRUD: Unidentified gunmen ambushed a Nato container on Tuesday morning, killing the driver and cleaner in Jamrud, Khyber Agency.

Political tehsildar Irshad Khan said two unidentified gunmen on a motorcycle opened fire at the empty container near Hawaldari check post as it was en route from Afghanistan. He added driver Saleem Khan lost control of the vehicle after being shot at and the container plowed into a house where several children were injured and subsequently rushed to a hospital. While the condition of the children was said to be stable, Saleem Khan and his assistant did not survive. Saleem was a resident of Lakki Marwat and his assistant was from Zaka Khel.

Irshad said khasadars opened retaliatory fire but the assailants managed to escape, saying no one has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.

In another incident, a driver who was shot and injured by unidentified gunmen on Jamrud Bypass succumbed to his injuries late Monday night.

The political administration subsequently arrested 15 suspects under the Frontier Crimes Regulation. Irshad said the suspects include Afghan refugees, adding they also recovered a motorcycle, gun and 30 kilogrammes of opium from their possession.

The political administration recently imposed a ban on motorcycle riding in the agency due to the precarious law and order situation.
