26 years after the C-130 crash, I decided to pick up Benazir Bhutto’s much-lauded 1988 memoir, Daughter of the East. Initially apprehensive given that Benazir begins with her father’s execution, I had prepared myself for the barrage of criticism that would be directed towards General Zia. Three chapters in, however, I found myself laughing at the baseless accusations that Bhutto levels against Zia and his family.
Regarding the former president’s funeral, Benazir claims that in order to increase participation, the government paid for the accommodation of citizens in Islamabad. In reference to Shahnawaz Bhutto’s funeral, Benazir describes the feeling of tremendous sadness that swept over Sindh, and how millions turned up to mourn ‘martyr Bhutto’s’ son. The videos of the 1988 state funeral are online, and while Shahnawaz’s untimely and mysterious death (which his niece Fatima claims was Benazir’s doing) may have attracted many supporters, there is no comparison to the two to three million individuals who descended upon Faisal Masjid from all across Pakistan. The Mohtarma’s memoir is replete with the downplaying of the facts which reveal the support Zia had from Pakistanis.
Then there is the absolutely absurd claim that General Zia planned to flee to Saudi Arabia after Benazir’s return in 1986. She writes, “Zia allegedly left with his family, three airline containers of furniture, and a gold-plated Rolls Royce gifted to the president from an Arab head of state.” I’d certainly like to know where the car is, because we, Zia’s family, definitely don’t have it; perhaps it, along with the ‘furniture’, has made its way to Surrey, or better yet, the underground garage of a certain someone’s Park Lane apartment.
In order to understand the extent of the damage that Bhutto, both father and daughter, caused to Pakistan, one has to dig deeper. Yet, our media is inclined toward the superficial, remaining on the surface during attempts to dissect the characters of General Zia and Bhutto — a moustached general who came to power through martial law doesn’t look as good to them as an idealistic prime minister with a feudal background swaying the masses with his romantic notions of roti, kapra and makaan.
If power doesn’t change hands, and only changes faces, which Fatima Bhutto once said in a Karan Thapar interview, then Benazir, behind her dupatta and coiffed hair, was about as much a dictator as General Zia. A January 1995 Amnesty International report titled Pakistan: The Pattern Persists outlines the human rights promises made by the PPP, and how the government instead facilitated the spread of torture and rape by the “widespread practice of incommunicado detention, sometimes in places not officially designated as prisons.” There was also Operation Clean-up or Blue Fox, which under Bhutto’s initiation turned Karachi into a hotbed for sectarian violence that continues to this day.
On the much-decried issue of General Zia’s censorship, let’s not forget Junoon’s song Ehtesaab, parodying fat cat bureaucrats and politicians as well as the infamous poly pony stables at PM House, which was banned from being aired on PTV under Benazir’s premiership. Najam Sethi said it best in the 1996 exposé, Princess and the Playboy, when he told viewers that Bhutto forgot to be an elected leader and instead became a queen. The irony lies in her repeated reference to herself as Cory Aquino, and General Zia in the same category as Ferdinand, the Shah and other tyrants. In hindsight, it seems that she was less Aquino and more Imelda.
More recently, however, under the government of former president Zia’s biggest mistake, the media has launched a campaign of defaming his character under the guise of political satire. The July 31 episode of Express News’s Media Azaad Hai parodied Ziaul Haq in extremely bad taste: if the media is truly as ‘azaad’ as it says it is, then perhaps it should also poke fun at the former prime minister’s late father in primetime.
It’s almost funny how political programmes across networks repeatedly mention former president Ziaul Haq in every single episode. Why? Because General Zia sells books, because General Zia gets ratings up, because General Zia is forever etched into our selective national memory.
We never fled the country, never got whisked away by a sympathetic Middle Eastern despot. President Zia did not run any political party like a family business either. He did not pass on the mantle of power to his son, or spouse, or sibling in a system akin to monarchy. It is today’s politicians who think they can loot and plunder Pakistan’s exchequer, manipulate the mandate from the people, and then cry foul in remembrance of the dictators that sent them into the wilderness of exile (Kensington, Jeddah, Dubai). This is ‘democracy’ in Pakistan, and General Zia is its most convenient target.

After reading this I am reminded of a quote: Better to Remain Silent and Be Thought a Fool than to Speak and Remove All Doubt
I usually do not comment on articles specially when I disagree and I have this consciousness of not being too impolite to discourage you from writing in the future, but honey you really need to take those rose tinted glasses off!! I don't remember any piece of writing annoying me as much as this did- and I have also read The Twilight.
Zia ul Haq is a posthumous candidate for article 6 per constitution.
To my dear brother,
It was a clear judicial murder and your beloved grandfather being the head of the state was undoubtedly involved in it. For reference i would suggest you to read one of the blogs of Express Tribune: http://tribune.com.pk/story/359440/zulfikar-ali-bhutto-the-man-who-made-history/
Being a London based student you must have heard about Noam Chomsky who mentioned once in his book "What we say goes" that "General Zia ul Haq and Saudi Arabia destroyed Pakistan’s public education" and the case was otherwise when you talk about Shaheed ZABhutto.
I now doubt British Education System that caused you comparing a democratic national hero with a General. Sorry to say, as he was your grandfather but he is root cause of destroying this, once a beautiful and peaceful, land.
Aitezaz Ahsan once said:
Riyasat hogi ma kai jaisi, har shehri say pyar karay gi, Fauj lagay gi sab ko achi, jab sarhad kai pass rahay gi.
General Zia ul Haq shaheed was the best leader we ever had.
Isn't it the pot calling kettle black ! Check your grandfathers background / roots and try figuring out where did you guys get all this money ! You think people are fools ! Sorry my dear history can not be changed ..
I just wish, you had lived through those horrible, horrible times. Sad those chapters still remain illusive part of my life, if not yours.
The curfew, the mad rush.....the hope to reach home safe and sound, the streets of Khi, calamity and chaotic....the birth of Taliban in our midst today.....hei sad....just sad. You can't even ever think. Worst ruler the nation-state ever had.
I am told; your grand-dad said in a jam-packed 1000 people seminar, he hates and deplores "writers and educationists"....full marks to you you are going just against that 80's tidal wave.
No mention of the coup and the execution of a selected PM.
@A Sindhi: "In one thing Zia is lucky; though he has become the emblem of brutality but people still defend him!"
In people's opinion there have been candidates who deserved that title even better.
What a crap. He was an usurper and and didn't have any legitimate right to rule the country. It was his short sightedness due to which our country has been burning for last 35 years. Being his blood doesn't warrant you to defend his wrongdoings.
Most of the Pakistani rulers were bad, but Gen. Zia takes the medal for being the worst leader of our benighted country. From brutalizing the society by meting out cruel punishments like public lashing to dragging Pakistan into the Afghan conflict, this monster set Pakistan on a road to disaster. His only saving grace was his love for mangoes.
brilliant.. looking forward
Actually Democracy never suited us.. Gen Zia sacrificed his life for the country.. We still call him Mujahid and a great loss... but then there was empowering of our Faith. If Allah can give us Gen Zia... he can give us Slahuddin Ayubi, Omar R.A, Tipu.... and this nation deserves another great ruler today !
Dude please do yourself a favor and start exploring creative writing as a new career path. You're wasting your talents with this nonsense - seriously, pointing fingers at autocratic Bhuttos to excuse egomaniac Zia? Also, read A Case of Exploding Mangoes to get you started with the new career.
"It is today’s politicians who think they can loot and plunder Pakistan’s exchequer, manipulate the mandate from the people, and then cry foul in remembrance of the dictators that sent them into the wilderness of exile (Kensington, Jeddah, Dubai). Beta do you think that your grandfather did not loot and plunder Pakistan's exchequer? Ha ha ha! How do you afford living in London darling...it ain't free you know! Your grandfather's salary would never afford what you spend, living lavishly, and educating yourself in the UK! Please ask your parents where the money came from??? Oh let me guess, people loved the man so much they gifted it to him!. Blah crap!
I am sure you meant "timely" death! @NK:
I can't believe you have his name as your middle name. How could one own a monster, murderer and a brutal hypocrite even if he is related to you. Read a critical and unbiased history. And please don't go near Palestinians telling them that you are Zia's grandson. He murdered thousands of them in Jordan. and by the way, why are you not in a madressah or that whole so called Islamization was for show and for the masses?
for one the writer has been highlighted at a tender age 2ndly id try to be unbiased at this but the general's grandsons having his secondry education abroad and is worried about pakistan, i do aggree with all his accusations about making fun of zia and why not zab. well thats the media son and ur grand dad doesent have any reps in current times other then u.so thumbs up, what i feel from ur side is a lot of aggression towards ppp id just say be an optimist and pray for pakistan.
Zia-Ul-Haq will be remembered for his allowing Pakistan to be used as a proxy for western war against the Soviets in Afghanistan. This led to the talibanisation of Pakistan and flooding the country with drugs and armaments. He misused Islam to control the population and exert his authority. Prior to his undeserved promotion over the heads of 7 other generals he was involved in the massacre of Palestinians. He was a repressive dictator, and a hypocrite. His biggest crime was the murder of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, for which he will be reviled for years to come. Blood is thicker etc etc
Nice junior Zia ul haque. But you need to read more about your grandpa. He did not only destroy Pakistans future for many years to come. But also planned the killings and torture of Palestinians in Jordan. To help the regime of The Jordanian Hashmitian king. Remember Black September? Google it please. Your grandpa was nobodys friend google what his friends say about him, Bhutto, Usa, etc etc. But thats not your fault, but dont defend a despot, dictator wannabe king.
In one thing Zia is lucky; though he has become the emblem of brutality but people still defend him!
Great job man. I am and shall always be a great fan and supporter of President Zia-ul-Haq Shaheed. Excell your self in history, philosohy, political science, economy and higher education. Come back to Pakistan where we are facing a strong "drought of wisdom".
Very interesting to see Zia's grand child inspired by Bhutto's grand daughter.
@Hamid: "The strategic depth has worked very well for Pakistan. We fought USSR in Afghanistan and today fighting USA in the same battle field. It’s sad our people don’t understand things beyond the obvious"
We had no business fighting"USSR in Afghanistan", a country which never considered Pakistan a friendly neighbour. However if Soviets entered Pakistan strong textonly thenstrong text defending our country would have been mandatory.
Are we "fighting USA today"? No! But our Army is rightfully engaged in war on terror against monsters who are products of Zia & Co. It is sad the way people are mislead.
The general was a good dictator but he was a bad leader. I don't believe his thoughts were selfish. He was a soldier after all, however, soldiers are aggressive yet patriotic. The time was not right martial law was mandatory, it had its pros and cons but we are Pakistanis we stress on the cons and forget the pros. Perphaps we need a more selfish leader because enough is never enough for us. I am not a proud Pakistani, there is nothing to be proud of. Sometimes I feel sorry for all those people who fought for our independence. It's gone to waste.
okay you made Benazir look bad but that doesn't justify what your grandpa did.Stupid article
Being an AHMADI MUSLIM myself, first I thought of posting a comment BUT when so many people have written so much on this post then I decided against it as what I wanted to say has already been said by a large number of the people over here...
You have the same sentiments for your grandfather as Benazir had for her father, you overshadowed his blunders committed by your Grandfather oin your article. This write-up of yours is full of dichotomy. What about the Public flogging,Hudood Ordinance and many other questionable resolutions passed by puppet parliamentarians of Zia era.Iam not fan of Bhutto's dynastic politicians either but,you must have accepted the historical disasters Zia inflicted to this nation forerver
I am no fan of the political lot of this country but Zia and other dictators need to take a lot of blame for their current state. The Sharifs were created by Mr. Zia himself and Bhuttos were made stronger in the long term, giving them sympathies of the masses by Zia's action too. So it is not about your family or their family, its Pakistan and its population that have suffered always!
Have some humility, just sit quietly until his (your) lineage ends, or until people forget your nuisance of a family ever existed.
He was much better than Benazir, BHutto, Nawaaz combined.
Zia was one of the best leader. There was no terrorism before 2001; it all started when Musharaf got invloved in US war for no reason.
Wow, this guy is going to make millions if he writes a book, ppl will buy his book in Hatred.
Your grand father was a man of stature. When he spoke people listened. He never cheated his own people. He was a believer and felt no shame in it. He walked humbly as a created being and with dignity as a soldier and a statesman. He looked people straight in the face and smiled back as a person who had nothing to hide. He defended Pakistan when USSR was at its border. He was constantly looking for companions to assist him in serving his country. Never let yourself think of him as anything less. The only way they could have moved that rock was the way they did. There will always be people who will speak discouraging words, but your grand father was too big a person for them to ignore.
Nice platform into a career in journalism since this has gone viral.
Read the disclaimer at the start for god's sake and stop asking why the writer isn't defending his granddad, since that WASN' T the point.
Kiddo! How can you feel justified to defend ur Grand father when he had the blood of millions and millions to come on his hand, His soul will never have peace. Rather defending him, you must ask for forgiveness of his sins.
@Hamid:
"@salim: The strategic depth has worked very well for Pakistan. We fought USSR in Afghanistan and today fighting USA in the same battle field. It’s sad our people don’t understand things beyond the obvious."
Of course, the "strategic depth" super idea has worked very well for Pakistan. It has turned Pakistan into a terrorist epicenter and a global migraine. It has bankrupted the nation and bred terrorists of all kind who are now "working" very well for Pakistan. It has caused fellow Muslims of Afghanistan hate Pakistanis. It has helped keep the army as the supreme power in Pakistan and subvert the constitution, democracy, civilian rule and democratic institutions. It has rendered the country dirt poor with a huge debt load. It has fully radicalized the society and encouraged massacre of minorities and the Baloch. It has helped create super rich army generals and feudals. The list is very long....
@Mustafa: You don't care mate. I am intrested in listening what he has to say
Grandson of the pious "living within his means" dictator Ziaul. How come you can afford schooling and life in London. Why not the madrassas sponsored by your "pious" grand dad?
Great article. Zia ul haq was a great man. May Allah bless him with highest place in Jannah. These so called leaders did nothing but looted the country. Pakistani's were the slave of British and now these feudal lords. Bhutto's family made us lose half our country and got so many innocent people killed and yet people still praise them. I still remember when I was young and growing up during Zia's rule if there was any problem in Karachi they used to put curfew and get things sorted but after him Benazir and Nawaz Sharif killed so many innocent people that up till now Karachi has not recovered from it.
Kid thanks for writing this article. Keep writing and don't listen to blamers because this is all they can do. Both the political parties had been in power since 1988 and they still blame your Grand father for and the bad things. I feel for my countrymen but Allah do not change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselves.
a moustached general who came to power through martial law. Period!!
Rather than talking about General Zia most of your article is about running down Bhutto's. The title should have been different. I remember Zia's rule and as a teenager was traumatised by all the happenings of the era ! It was the only period in our history when journalists were publicly flogged for their views ! It was a brutal oppressive time when many progressive minded people were black listed and given early retirements from their jobs for their views. He brought violence into our lives by introducing the gun and heroine culture. Used religion to divide and rule the country and lots of ills of our society now are all seeds sowed by him ! Its brave of you but you cannot defend what is universally accepted as the darkest period in Pakistan's history.
Keep it in the family! This narrative won't sell outside.
Can ppl please read the disclaimer at the start? Zia is not trying to defend anyone, he is trying to point out that all the leaders, especially the so-called saviour of democracy Benazir, are all responsible for the problems in our country. This wasn't about Zia's achievements either, so stop targeting by saying that the author did not list any achievements because they're are supposedly not any. I'll leave you with the fact that GDP under Zia was fastest growing. Anyone saying there was economic instability is absolutely uninformed. As for corruption, that is a different story.
ET should be glad that Zia has decided to write for them. Looking forward yobk
Mr Zia Adnan, Dont listen to these people. Your grand-father was a great man who led Pakistan towards true Islam. Thats what Pakistan needs. If Pakistan follows Islam strictly there will be no corruption and country will become a mighty power. These pseudo-intellectuals who comment in english papers do not represent the 99.9 % Pakistanis who have not been educated or read urdu and those are the real Pakistanis. As an Indian, I greatly admired Gen Zia and I wish he had remained in power for another decade. He used to love cricket and secretly he loved India.
Well written article ..... Gen Zia was not like what the political talk show hosts and pseudointellectuals potray him to be ... may have made some mistakes like everyone elae does but having said this most of what we hear about him in talk shows is false and negative propaganda and false perceptions .... He was An Honorable man ! Respects to him !
What happened to your grandfather's promise to hold elections within 90 days after becoming the unelected and unconstitutional leader of Pakistan?
Dear grandson.! Truth is stranger than fiction. However I do admire your courage to come out and rebutt. I guess the lack of reason has had your patience run out. I hope you recover from the forthcoming depression following this miserable attempt soon. Ofcourse you can always chant marde momin marde haq ziaulhaq ziaulhaq in early stages of anxiety and panic attacks..I dont think it will help though. I have an idea..start opposing ur grandad..just like fatima and benazir bhutto..it will earn you sympathy respect and who know maybe a seat in the parliament. Although highly unlikely. But whats the harm in dreaming.
Regards Pakistani
P.s if you think my post doesnt make any sense then you should read your post again. Which one is more bizarre? Close call indeed.
May Allah bless u I totally agree with
Nobody contests the corruption and political crimes of the Bhutto family. Highlighting the Bhutto Fraud does little to mitigate the Grand Evil that Zia ul Haq was.
And Zia sold us to the Americans- for the Afghan War with Russia. He is the one to gift us with the "curse" of Islamization leading to terrorism. He is directly responsible for the Klashinkov culture and the growing Talibainzation in Pakistan- With his baseless policies of Islamization. He made a terrible joke of Pakistan in the name of Islam. And today, He doesn't even have a grave in Pakistan! And Ijaz Ul Haq- his son- Did not leave any stone unturned- He was the minister for religious affairs when the Lal Masjid incident took place- Tryst me he would have made himself a political party, fortunately the mangoes exploded. Want to listen to more?
@salim:
The strategic depth has worked very well for Pakistan. We fought USSR in Afghanistan and today fighting USA in the same battle field. It's sad our people don't understand things beyond the obvious.
Hopefully there are no Palestinians studying at your university who know about your lineage, or you would have known first hand how much he is hated by them.Mention Zia's name in front of a Palestinian and you will be reminded, not very kindly, how this self proclaimed defender of Islam slaughtered 15,000 Palestinian men, women and children in Jordan.
Being a grandson of Zia-ul-Haque, you should be in a Madressah somewhere in Waziristan where you can learn how to become first Muazzan and then an Imam.
AssalamoalaikumWrb
Beta I do not have any political affiliation. General Zia ul Had may have made some mistakes but I honestly think he was the only true leader Pakistan got after Jinnah Sahib. I met him as a kid and i remember my extremely happy childhood under his rule. You should be proud of him!
I'll forward you a video presentation I made on his speech a few years ago. Brings tears to my eyes.
May Allah grant him a place in paradise. Aameen!
As an Indian, I think Zia was a great leader and did many favours for India. I wish he had remained in power longer. May Allah grant him peace. Adnan, son dont listen to these people. Your grand dad was a great soldier and a great leader who has shown Pakistan a new direction towards Islam. How can a true muslim say that the path to Islamization is wrong? Under him, Pakistan became a world Islamic power.
What we are suffering today in Pakistan, is direct result of military dictator General Ziaul Haq actions like heroin, Kalashinkov culture, Afghan refugees, narcotics and much more political instability in the country.About 10 thousands political workers were physically lashed out including five journalists. He was devil in real sense. I don't know how many our coming generations would suffer from such misdeeds? His grandson should be shameful rather than proud of his grandfather.
Zia, Yahya, Musharraf, Ayub all belonged to the same Army Party. This is the strongest political party in Pakistan. So the question is this: do we dump all our anger on these four individuals, or do we hold to account the political party that put them in power?
He passed it on to his political son, nawaz sharif @Ch. Allah Daad:
Haters are gonna hate!!
Those who are uttering negativity from there shitty mouths, -Sadly- do not know the qualities of great leaders.
Well done young man!!!! you have at least tried to show mirror to the Champions and Nobles of Democracy and Flag bearers of free and fair media.
He passed it on to his son nawaz sharif@Ch. Allah Daad:
He was a great guy and true muslim who brought strength and prosperity to our country.his rule was a true golden era of pakistan history.
Seeing title: I thought it is written by Hamza or Maryam....!!!!
Can't believe you're blaming the PPP for the state of affairs in Karachi. Who created the MQM?
@Tariq Nawaz: He was your neighbor in Jullunder? Couldn't you have convinced him to chill and just stay put there? (and let India suffer the consequences of his existence, instead of Pakistan?)
Zia not responsible terror. Do not forget that pakistan was peaceful for 16 years after zia death
The answer to Zia's crimes is the list of BB's mistakes. typical pakistani behaviour
@AUTHOR - it seems probably that you are the next "saviour" of Pakistan.... some come from Canada (to "Save Pakistan") others come from some place else, but one day hope you come from London to do so... can hardly wait...!!
I am surprised on those people whose blood boiled when found that the writer is London based though all "sincere" and "loyal" politicians sons, daughters and even their businesses are in this beloved country.
Criticism is very easy for any body against anyone. Everybody has the right to defend his ideology or leader. Still there are many persons, even well educated and sitting on top slots too, who still support Zia.
Whether he is extremist or spread heroine or AK47 culture, its another and long debate. But in short, it was Bhutto who first invited Afghan Mujahideen leaders against Russian block.
All I am gonna say is few lines from Habib Jalib's nazam
Zulmat ko Zia , Sar Sar Ko Saba Bande ko Khuda Kya Likhna,, Kya Likhnaa
A very well written article. Though I'm not much of a fan of General Zia, I will still have to say that Pakistan has seen a very good time during his rule.
if he is indeed your grand father, then try and ask your mother about him and you will understand
@sarah tahir:
"Dear Adnan me and my family love and respect your grandfather. He has done things that non of these so called leaders can do. He was a true muslium a true soldier and a true pakistani "
Yes, he did what no other Pakistan leaders did. He butchered several hundred Palestinians in the Black September operation in 1970.
This is perhaps the most courageous piece that ET has published.
One article, and social media explodes - And FYI from what I gathered, this wasn't about defending the actions of a dictator. It was about pointing out that two wrongs don't make a right, and that we should stop targeting people.
There really is a very fine line between democracy and dictatorship. Zia's so called dictatorship was certainly better than whatever you'd like to call what we're living under today .
And to the writer, in you is a courage that these 5 percent pseudo-liberals, only in it for a silly ministry or NA seat, will NEVER recognize.
To the comments moderator, I suggest you and the paper stop trying to inflate the issue further by publishing personal and abusive attacks. This is not your policy, nor is this a chat room for frustrated political goons.
Honestly this sounds very melodramatic. But in real how Zia's regime has led this nation to destruction, it is irreparable. Let's us take entertainment industry for one. Till date our film industry couldn't revive from the losses it faced then. Terrorism is a gift to the nation by Zia against the Saudi money he was granted. I am not a Bhutto fan, but no human being deserves to be killed and buried like Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto. His zero vision and fanatism has led our country to where it is now.
Zia was a dictator and he should have been punished for staging a coup Most of the current problems of extremism are due to mis-guided policies of President Zia .We are suffering as a nation because of this dictator
Dictator...who killed an elected prime minister of Pakistan...and single highhandedly put this county in mire it is in now...if your family had the dignity they would have left this country and buried them self somewhere hoping to forget that you have Zia's blood.
Before Zia-ul-Haq, Pakistan was definitely a freer society. The country was less isolated internationally. Pakistanis did not experience disrespect around the world.
Sins of the father may not be visited on the sons, but still, the son has to live with the truth. Better to change name, address, go into hiding, to spare the future generations.
This grandson of the worst dictator should stay there spending money his father earned through all illegal means during his grandfather era. 26 year ago we were relieved that your grandfather died. As far as funeral is concerned I would like to ask you how many people visit your grandpa grave now.. I have literally seen stray dogs roaming around your grand dad grave...
Get your facts straight before writing such lame article.
Dear Grandson,
Zia was the worst nightmare the nation could have. May Allah forgive him for all the miseries he caused. May Allah save us from a similar bigot in future...
Keep it up boy! I know he made a worst blunder by spreading Afghan Refugees in Pakistan during Russia war which brought up Cocaine, Charas, Guns and Weapons to public but, still he was better than the leaders who were responsible for Bankruptcy in Democracy, Loss of East Pakistan due to "sectarian hatred", Sectarian violence in Karachi in 1990s and making the currency value cross x100 from US Dollars! Regarding Islamisation... I prefer it for Pakistan because Pakistan was founded on the basis of Islam... I guess, if we remove Islam from Pakistan then United India is a better choice in the sub-continent.. No offence but this is actually true! Because, if Pakistan's basis was actually Secularism or Liberalism and not Islamism then people wouldn't have Echoed "Pakistan ka matlab kiya, La Ilaha Illallah" in all over India during the struggle and that there was no mentioning of "MUSLIM" in the party of United India which became the platform of Independence of Pakistan...
Dear Zia Junior. Today is the28 the death anniversary of the Grand father. I am sure you or any family member of yours will go at his grave. You tell me tomorrow how many millions attended the anniversary. You will find the answer.
I feel sad for you to have been born into the infamy brought upon your family by your grand father. I realize that what your grand father did should not be held against you. Having said that you lose that defense when you openly defend the actions of a dictator. No matter what Bhutto, Benazir or for that matter any other elected representative of the people ever did wrong, it pales infront of the irrepairable damage Zia (the dictator) caused Pakistan and its culture. No matter what non-sensical reasoning you come up with you and your dictator grand father will forever languish on the wrong side of history.
The kid would by now be regretting his misguided attempt at glorifying his grandfather Zia. He must have imagined that in this times of turmoil, his grandfather's battered image could be redeemed since the citizens are pretty much disillusioned with democracy. Theoretically, the timing of this article couldn't be better. But what the kid didn't know were the details of the atrocities committed by Zia left a stronger imprint on the minds of the people. He would do well to remove "Zia" from his name.
You ask a very specific question. What happened to the gold-plated Rolls Royce your granddad received from an Arab Prince, quoting Benazir's memoirs. None of the comments answer that question. You may well be right it may be parked either at the Surrey Palace or the Sharif's Park Lane residence.
Other than bad-mouthing you and your granddad none of the comments actually address any of the points raised in your article. So, my advice, just ignore them
Very convincing.Zia was a very humble soul and a true patriot. My and his family were neighbours in Jullunder.
Bhutto: Myth and Reality
http://pakistanlink.org/Opinion/2012/Aug12/03/04.HTM
Unfortunately Pakistan has had some of the worst scoundrels leading their country. The military rulers have been better in terms of law and order and the economy and levels of corruption have been much lower,. during their tenure., It's is beyond belief what's happening now. A provincial Law Minister is caught on camera taking a huge bribe and he denies it as a forgery. The PPP's Makhdoom Amin Fahim had Rs.4 crores deposited in his account and he said he had absolutely no idea who had deposited that money and why?
Politics in Pakistan has nothing to do with serving the public but everything to do with getting on to the gravy train.
Thanks for the article. Proves that the so-called "simple and pious" Ziaul has also billions of looted money stashed up in foreign lands for his progeny to enjoy. How about investigating Ziaul's Swiss accounts. Must be ten times worth Benazir's accounts.
Dear Adnan me and my family love and respect your grandfather. He has done things that non of these so called leaders can do. He was a true muslium a true soldier and a true pakistani may Allah bless him with high ranks in Jannah
he was a great leader and be proud of yourself !! all the abuse and blame is just because of the political leaders specially corrupt ones !! he was the most loved and honest person in the history of Pak!
Regardless of what Zia was and regardless of what the young and intelligent ZIa has to say in this article, i must say, most people commenting here haven't learned how to talk to a young boy. Some things even good English can't correct now, can it?
Good work Zia, keep writing for whatever you want to, keep speaking up about what you believe. Cheers!
The horror of having to live wit that name. I pity you, but it is paying for a UK education.
Did the ET seriously allow this to be published? Its the most childish thing I have ever read. Both Bhutto and Zia are long gone, let it go seriously.
@ahsan: Army dictators are not good news for any country but Sikander Mirza and Ayub Khan are grand fathers of the worst leader Bhutto, he made sure that Pakistan will be divided and what ever followed is the direct result of his crimes.
Dear Grandson of Great Dictator, Your Grandpa is responsible for all the Sectarian and Ethnic Violence in Pakistan. Because of your Grandpa Kalashnikov Culture spread in our Country. How can anyone forget Black September? Where you Grandpa Killed some 25000 Innocent Palestinians?
I am an Ahmadi and Zia ul Haq is my gunahgar.
Dear M Zia Adnan,
Asalaamoalaykum. Let me congratulate you first on an out-standing article. Your grandfather was a hero & shall always remain to be such. The people referring to him as a bigot are the true bigots. These people are the very reason for the mess our country is in today. Worthless ingrates who have short-termed memories. The problem with us is that ever-since the western backed liberal news channels popped up a decade back, & the media started feeding us garbage, most of us who lacked any sort of intellectual depth fed on that garbage & came to be experts on national & international affairs. I remember the time of Gen Zia & I recall the pride that we used to feel at being Muslims & Pakistanis. Don't get down by the fact these ignorant people are commenting against General Zia Shaheed (yes the real Shaheed). As Hazrat Ali (R.A) put it, "the majority is always of the ignorant". These people allege that Gen Zia Shaheed brought in the gun culture. Please! He only gave refuge to Afghan civilians escaping war & persecution. Imagine if we would've acted like Egypt recently did in the case of the Palestinian escaping Israeli aggression! That would've been shameful. He did what any real God-fearing Muslim would've done at his place. As far as the gun culture is concerned, that existed in FATA, the tribal areas of Balochistan, the tribal areas of Sindh & in parts of Punjab much before him. People say he created the Sharifs & the Gillanis (thats a new one)'. Well he isn't around now, so who is voting these jokers in? Some facts these people have! I can bet most of them were born after Gen Zia's time. The real deal is that whatever these people say doesn't count. We are here on this earth as God's servants & we are being tested. Your grandfather was a practicing Muslim, who tried to uphold the laws & commandments of Allah. As a head of state of the 'Islamic Republic of Pakistan', he was the only one who actually tried to work towards making it an Islamic State. There was peace in his time. There was discipline. There was fear of God & fear of law. The country was united. The foreign debt was at its lowest. The military was its strongest. And the country was progressing at a steady pace. Best of all, he was not a puppet (the very reason of his untimely & tragic death). Let these people keep on spewing rubbish against that great leader, for they would have to defend their allegations infront of the Almighty one day & present what they themselves did for the interest of the state & interest of our faith. God bless you, God bless your grandfather, God bless Pakistan & God bless all Muslims across the world !!
When Fatima Bhutto published her poetry book in 1996, she was maybe 15 or 16. Why did OUP Pakistan, such a reputable publishing house publish the book? Because she was Mir's daughter, Benazir's niece and Zulfi's granddaughter.
Stop personally attacking and realize that two wrongs don't make a right, and there is no need to get so jazbati.
Seems like we need a fire brigade here.
So many comments....all personal attacks on the writer himself. If you have an issue then comment on the piece. Oh wait...it's all true. And it takes courage to write it.
dude Zia did not pass on his dictatorial regime to his next generation because he COULD NOT ,remember a democratic leader has 9 lives and a dictator has only ONE LIFE.He was not an elected president he was an IMPOSED dictator who spent 11 years by solely relying on army not on power of vote.
Very well researched and an interesting read for sure!
It's amazing how when roles are reversed, people are unable to exhibit even an ounce of tolerance. It's fine for all of you to bash Zia and his era all day, everyday but if someone tries to point out the flaws and lies of your beloved leaders, it's unbearable. Hypocrites.
It says a lot about the 'piety' of Zia when the best you can do is compare it with another power mongrel. I'm one of those who have actually experienced Zia's reign so all that comparison accounts for squat nothing in front of what we've witnessed. Have the maturity to accept your grand dad for what he was. I would start by a formal apology to the whole nation for the long term suffering he has inflicted on Pakistan.
I read the first paragraph and then decided not to waste any more time.
You said Benazir killed Shahnawaz and his daughter Fatima blames Benazir?
Smarty pants, Fatima's father was Murtaza Bhutto whose murder is blamed on Benazir.
Shahnawaz was poisoned while abroad. Next time you want to waste your time, please do it productively.
How can you expect anyone to hold their tongue for so long when you are all the time just bashing bashing bashing.
Zia is a human, his grandson is a human, his family are humans. Stop bullying and look to the future for god's sake.
This is why our country can never be fixed.
This certainly is better than Juggan Kazim's self-help op-eds.
this is the worst piece i have ever read in my life. By criticizing Benazir Bhutto, writer can not wash away the crimes of Zia. I think the writer is still young and should choose some other profession instead of trying to become a fake political commentator. PPP and every one may have been or are wrong but , what Zia did every one will remember for decades to come ....
I hope this is the first and last we hear from Zia's grandson. For the better.
To understand grand father, just read his policies and then apply those policies on yourself. If you did, you would be training in madrasa in Arabic to become a jihadi instead of studying in the UK. But then he was a master of double standards. While he sent the masses to die in jihad, Aijaz Ul Haq, his son, lived in the US in luxury. But yes, Zia was not the only one. This is typical of Pakistan army generals and high officials, who continue to promote Jihad in Pakistan but send their own kids to live and study in the west. It is also our fault as a people to allow such duplicity to prevail. Zia destroyed Pakistan like none other. There are no two opinions on that.
From a very basic level, I remember Zia's time very well. It was a peaceful time, yes there was martial law but like Ata Turk, this country needs a dictator and a monarchy for atleast a 100 years before they grow up. This democracy or so called american pushed democracy is worst than any monarchy or martial law.
Seriously ? What kind of hog wash is all this write up ? Zia was a curse on Pakistan and generations of Pakistanis will pay a terrible price. Bhutto was not a saint either. Pakistan will survive as a nation only if the embrace plurality and treat all its citizens regardless of faith, gender with equal respect.
Finally someone gets the courage to speak the truth about 'Daughter of East!' Firstly I do not understand how can living a life of comfort in French cheatue's and English countryside palaces (during her so called 'Exile' under Zia) counts as 'struggle for democracy.' And what we get for her struggles for democracy? IPPs! Thank you daughter of east for putting in the capacity payment clause on behalf of IPPs in contracts. Just last year we paid 245 billion out of 480 billion circular debt as capacity payment which means IPPs got paid for electricity they never produced but could have (had the capacity to do so) so we have to pay. Independent economists claim daughter of east IPP policies netted US$ 5 billion for Pakistan as investment inflows, while in the same period IPPs earned and repatriated from Pakistan US$ 35 billion! Good work daughter of east.
Gen.zia died before he could bequeath and what left was utilized by your father and i'd suggest you should join PTI
Does evil nature of Bhuttos make Zia a good person???? This article is totally out of context with lame arguments. At least writer should come out of his world to see what zia have by and large done to this country...
Disappointing to note that even the third generation of the worst dictator of our country has no shame for his deeds and they do not repent.
Let me say that I too find dictators and military rulers as a disease that has plagued Pakistan. However, they are not the only ailment and were ruthlessly facilitated in destroying the country by their civilian counterparts. ZA Bhutto was a fascist and we all know it, Benazir and Company were tyrants who plundered national exchequer and Nawaz Sharif is the combination of Bhutto Senior and Junior. Blaming Zia while exalting Bhutto is not and can never be the right thing to do. Kudos to the writer for this piece is excellent.
All I see you doing is complaining about your grandfather being singled out by everyone when the atrocities he committed on people and the dictator mindset were replicated in a way by Benazir. To that extent I agree with you, Benazir was indeed an absolutely clueless, over confident excuse for a leader who thought she was a goddamn queen. But here's the newsflash, it doesn't change what your grandfather was. And we all know what he was. He's your grandfather, so yea I can see why you're upset about people singling him out. But really, he screwed up this country good.
The Family Zia pass on to nation was more dangarous than other leaders legacies.. I am talking about the Extremist (Jahadi) family he raise during his tenure... that family isolated us from the whole world to this extent many of us feel ashamed abroad to tell they are from Pakistan as they no the reaction they will receive
I think Zia -ul- Haq era was a dark one. He would never be forgotten for his wrong deeds; his hands were fully painted with Bhutto's blood.
This kind of blind support of your father/forefather is precisely why Pakistan is where it is now. We will support our parents/family/friends regardless of what they have done even if they had raped and murdered a thousand people.
It's not this kid's fault. It's a collective national tragedy.
@ Author If your defense of Zia is that others were bad too, then that isn't really a defense. Yes we agree that democratic governments and leaders are corrupt to the core but does that absolve Zia of his crimes? No, he was equally (if not more) corrupt in his way and intentions.
Good Adnan Zia, I appreciate it, I have read many stories on General Zia Ul Haq , I respect him and I like him so much, I would suggest you to read Javid Chaudhry's Gaye dino ky sooraj who have spotted some nice things about your grandpa and also try to know about Operation black September.
"The writer is a London based student" says it all.
A teenage kid brought up outside Pakistan commenting on Pakistani politics. I am not a fan of Bhutto's or Sharif's but take my word kid your grand father screwed up Pakistan.
General Zia Ul Haq messed up this country Pakistan and its society. Afghans, Terrorism, and sectarianism, and militant madrassas are his gifts for the country. The country today is at the brink of disaster due to his policies. Though YOU are not to be blamed in anyway for his actions, but his rule was no doubt the worst for Pakistan, worst ever...
I'm sorry but one needs to see it from the family's point of view. There has been so much slander and abuse directed to them and their father/grandfather on a daily basis, and yet, when they speak out, the whole world goes into a frizzle and begins offending.
We live in a 'democracy'. Deal with it and move on. You can't expect people to remain silent. And anyone calling this article abusive, I suggest you read Saroop Ijaz's pieces on this very platform which probably makes the blood of this young gentleman boil. The whole media attacks Zia and then you expect Zia's family to remain silent. Bravo.
Sorry dude,
I can understand your feelings, usually now people (including me) speak up against your Grand Father. Why????
Not because of the fact that your family didn't flee outside Pakistan like Nawaz Sharif and Benazir Bhutto, even not for the matter that your Grand Father didn't left any political kin from your family. But for the reason that the poisonous crop that your grandfather sow in shape of religious extremism and allowance of Afghan refugees in the country, nation is badly reaping it.
Your grandfather made Afghan War as Pakistani war, which turned into the introduction of Kalashnikov Culture and Heroine Culture in the country. Religious Extremism was brought up during General Zia's era, many of the moderate voices were forcefully suppressed.
I'm regretfully saying that your grandfather's era was the most dark era yet in the Pakistan history.
Its a bitter truth but I think wisdom is to accept it.
Nothing against military rule, I myself don't believe that we as nation are ready or deserving of democracy but Zia-ul-Haq was one of the worst leader Pakistan had. Not from an economic point of view. The most significant mistake he made was helping in the creation of Taliban which stop this country from progressing till this day.
Zia-ul-haq, Ayub khan and Pervez Musharraf all are great leaders better than zardare and nawaz, no doubt. They put Pakistan in the right path, we never let them to stable Pak. This article tells the right things that Zia sahab did. Typical thinking that Zia was worst becz we're brainwashed that way sorry.
@ahsan: First its rude to say a grand son that his father was corrupt. Secondly, based on all statistical data, Zia was among the least corrupt of all the politicians. He was not a saint, but neither a Satan.
Zia-ul-Haq, looking at all facts objectively, created the retrogressive Muslim culture in Pakistan, fanning sectarian divides, manipulating Allah's name to line up the ignorant masses in a helpless mode since no one, to this day, dares question religiosity, media freedom notwithstanding.
Zia supplied Osama bin Laden and his band of radical Sunni Wahaabi warriors to massacre Shias in Gilgit-Baltistan.
He created a culture that has set Pakistan back centuries.
Had the Russians not invaded Afghanistan, Zia would have not survived for as long as he did. Kissing up to Uncle Sam, exploiting the perceived Russian thirst for warm waters of the Arabian Sea and the Persian Gulf, Zia managed to hold on to power with his coterie of mummified officers.
General Zia is the most convenient target...sums it all.
The worst ruler among all rulers in Pakistan, and keeping in mind the general incredibly poor quality of leadership this country has had over the years, that's quite an achievement.
Leaving aside everything... your Grandfather abrogated the constitution and illegally held on to power for 11 years... that in itself makes him a criminal. What he did in those eleven years... makes him the personification of evil as far as I am concerned and no amount of white washing or mudslinging at his equally reviled opponents can change that, young man!
To this day, Zia remains to be apolarising figure in Pakistan's history, credited by some for preventing wider Soviet incursions into the region as well as economic prosperity, but decried for weakening democratic institutions and passing laws encouraging Islamic fundamentalism.[9]
Child, You have surprised me by having the courage to own him as grandfather, openly.
Well researched and thoughtful article by young lad. Zia is a easy target for these cunning politicians. Zia biggest fall was that he left job unfinished and it had serious repricurrsions on our future. Zia was morally correct with conservative views unlike Bhutto's that are manupulative.
Assuming the presidency in 1978, Zia played a major role in the Soviet war in neighboring Afghanistan whilst played an ambiguous role, in favor of Iran, during the Iran–Iraq War . Aided by the United States and Saudi Arabia, Zia systematically coordinated the Afghan mujahideen against the Soviet occupation throughout the 1980s. This culminated in the USSR's defeat andwithdrawal in 1989, but also led to the proliferation of millions of refugees, withheroin and weaponry into Pakistan's frontier province. On the foreign front, Zia also bolstered ties with China, the European Union, the United States, and emphasised Pakistan's role in the Islamic world, while relations with India worsened amid the Siachen conflict and accusations that Pakistan was aiding the Khalistan movement. Domestically, Zia passed broad-ranging legislation as part of Pakistan's Islamization, acts criticised for fomenting religious intolerance. He also escalated Pakistan's atomic bomb project, and instituted industrialisation and deregulation, helping Pakistan's economy become among the fastest-growing in South Asia.[6] Averaged over Zia's rule, GDP growth was the highest in history.
I really like the way u expressed...........!!
I am feel sickened by this criticism of President Zia. Let me tell you this is the majority of Pakistanis loves President Zia. He made some necessary laws like the Hudood laws. He had the courage to fight the Soviet Union when all had no courage to fight. A true Islamic state has to be Sharia in all way and President Zia did his best to make Pakistan a sharia state.
Well, the problem is even the children of corrupt, twisted and undemocratic live in the shadows of their family. They cannot step away and critically look at their own histories. It takes a certain courage and utmost commitment to the truth. Again, the writer is just foreign grown kid discovering Pakistan through poorly written library books and stories of their families. Sad future for our leadership.
Looks like the young man is unaware that the mantle does not pass on from the father to the son in the armed forces. There are other general officers in line for the mantle. In any case 11 years of unbridled and absolute power is enough to take care of generations to come. It amazes one no end that the progeny of one of the worst dictators to rule Pakistan and a man to whom much of the terrorism prevalent in Pakistan can be directly traced back to, can have the audacity to come and defend him. In any case, the comments against his vitriol will enlighten him as to how the people of Pakistan hold forth on his grandpa.
I do empathize with you on the fact that it is very convenient to humiliate and insult a person so easily just because he was a "muslim" /"dictator" both terms used so heavy handedly that they seem completely right .
What a wonderfully free country we live in. The sons and daughters of despots and military dictators are free to take up the pen not just to defend the indefensible actions of their ancestors, but to belittle and slander others. I am not a supporter of PPP by any stretch. But i would pick a thousand corrupt leaderships that uphold democracy and evolve the system slowly but surely, than one corrupt military dictator who wants permanent power through unconstitutional means. I am not in favour of nepotism and political parties being treated as fiefdoms, but again thats a smaller evil than being a dictator. No doubt Zia would surely have treated Pakistan as his own kingdom had it not been for his untimely death. If the children of political leaders are banned from politics because it signifies corruption and monarchy, then the descendants of dictators should never ever be allowed to publish a single piece defending their ancestors.
how do you see gen. zia's work on sectarian issues and khilafat type govt. in pakistan as it is in saudia arab. I think he was one and only mann in history of pakistan who was none other than a national threat to entire nation integrity and army repute in public. he is the only figure behind the present terrorism.
Well written piece, and believe me I have only pity on all critics above as they have nor rejected any point with an argument but showed their slave mind. Th gentleman has not supported any person he is just exposing our contemporary media and the practices of few politicians.
It seems the whole article is centered towards bashing Benazir Bhutto. It is not an article defending the Big Brother type Zia figure. While everyone knows what the total extent of Buhutto's prominence was, it should be key to point out that she was no way as bad as the Zia era. Perhaps if you had lived and looked through the eyes of the normal civilian of Zia's dictatorship, you would have known how much was at stake. He was an evil man and should not be looked at any other way historically.
To the grandson, please defend him at home not in public his actions are killing people evn today so please in the name of decency dont defend him
To remain in power Zia compromised Pakistan. His term as a dictator took Pakistan into dark ages. Even the existing political parties/leaders that were created and patronized by Gen Zia have publically apologized of supporting him. So it is not just a section of media or certain political parties that despise Gen Zia; there is a general consensus that he was the worst ruler this unfortunate country ever had.
We don't like what your grand father has done to Pakistan. We are facing all what he had done and I remember his times when I was in school. His reforms made schooling an very suffocated experience. The education was all about Islam and covering our head and bodies. It was horrible and I would not like this for my children or for anybody's child. We just do not approve of theocracy and military dictatorship. You grand father was all about these two things.
Excellent article! You showed the world the other side right there but haters will be haters & political goons will be political goons.
Dear Grandson,
Lets legislate a Huqooq-e-Ramazan Ordinance in London and ask you how you feel. :)
@Noor: Aseefa is always highlighted for the Polio campaign because it was her who was the first kid to be administered and even in those days was part of an advertisement campaign with others.
I believe you can follow the footsteps of Maududi's son -Khalid Farooq (just go on youtube and watch any of his interviews) - he does not defend the religious right epitomized by his father. He believes the church and state should be separate - he is not an apologist for his father.
And you do not have to be. Your grandfather famously declared himself to be an honorable man - I think you should ask the blind woman who was raped but jailed for adultery because she failed to bring four good muslims as her witness.
Hey brother just leave these pseudo liberals. ... Thy r hapy with ths democracy ...none of them is sincere with Pakistan... And for all those who are taunting him for being in london, no body is stopping u eithr.. If u have the option better avail it... Staying in london or any fpreign countries have nthng to do with his grand father...its now not a big deal to go to any foriegn countries....wat i observed as a lay man i was very happy with the military rule..people standrd of living , law and order situation were far far better then today... Democracy is nothng but just a way of looting ths country..
Pakistan zindabad G.A zia sb G.A musharaf sb
p.s: i do nt belong frm an army background
While Zia's sins are many, I will focus on just one KPI (key performance index): corruption. Ask anyone old enough, they will tell you that corruption was at a mangeable level, still taboo when ZIa took over in 1977. By the time God called him upstairs, in 1988, corruption was a raging fire in our country, well entrenched into the roots of society. In his 11 years, and because of the illegitimate nature of his power, he let corruption flourish. To this day that genie has not been able to be contained.
Zia ul Haq is responsible for most of Pakistan's turmoil. During Zia's era Pakistan become hotbed for the following ills 1- Sectarianism 2- Kalashnikov culture 3-Terrorism 4- Pitthu of America from which it is not escaping till yet 5- Meddling in other countries affairs 6- Drug culture.
I do not blame his grandson to talk in his favour as every grandson would do so. But Adnan Zia should know that his grandfather was the worst thing that ever happened to Pakistan.
Your grandfather was worst of people... who usurped power... like Israel did. . Now we are getting out of his dark shadows, this democracy has given you chance to voice your opinions. People would get flogged under your grandfather's rule just to say what they think!
It was a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury signifying nothing :). A suggestion to writer, plz change ur name as suggested by Jalib who personified ur mentor in true letter and spirit "zulmat ko zia kya kahna".
Bachay, You are kid and do your work. You cannot defend your grand father. He was most hypocrite dictator, who used name of Islam to prolong his rule. He is killer of democracy and a elected politician. Has not he killed so many people during ARD movement. He should have been tried also for murder case. All present day Islamic extremism is because of him.
Zia-ul Haq was among the best leaders Pakistan had. That is a fact:
Pakistan’s GDP was higher during our three military regimes as compared to our massively corrupt civilian dictators, but the highest was Zia-ul Haq's time.
People parrot the paid media's line that US aid was responsible for military era economic performances, but this is easily refuted with facts and statistics. Musharrafs entire rule brought in 20 billion in aid, and the war on terror incurred us a cost of 80 billion dollars, as per the National exchequer. The only reason the nation prospered was that educated and performance oriented people with careers and merits were managing things. Not illiterate politicians with fake degrees and fake promises.
Zia-ul Haq is blamed for "bringing militancy to Pakistan". That is also factually incorrect. Look at his speeches from 1988, he talks about rehabilitating Afghans from refugee camps to Afghanistan after securing damages and funding to rebuild their nation, from the International community. The Afghan war was brilliantly conducted and prevented Soviets from securing access to warm waters. Where we failed was managing the aftermath of the war, due to massively corrupt civilian rule in the 90's.
Ivd never seen any factual, logical answers in the media to this. All they do is portray their political benefactors as blameless, laying the blame on everyone else. Bottom line is, the average person fared much better under Zia-ul Haq's rule. The people weren't being crippled under unbearable inflation and a spineless and cowardly foreign policy.
Child, this is a lost cause if there ever was one. I suggest keeping your head down and not bringing up your lineage in polite company.
Your grandfather was the godfather of religious extremism and militancy kid. If you love your grandfather that much then why haven't you joined his creation TTP yet?
Not that this article has managed to make me a Zia supporter, I have disagreements with his ways too. That being said, I read Benazir's joke of an autobiography a few months ago and being a 21 year old with not that much knowledge of our country's politics, I too found her claims baseless. These people promise us Roti, Kapra aur Makan and rob us off whatever little we have.
Young Palestinian men of authors age were killed by a group of army members commanded by Major Zia ul Haq on Jordan River just because they were potential threat to King of Jordan. The name of operation was Black September. For this coward act King of Jordan gave a Mercedes and money to Major Haq. This author drove in that Mercedes and lived in the house build by that money.
All that is wrong with this country today is the result of the seed of utter contempt, hatred and bigotry sown by your very own, Grand Father Zia. However, being a member of his family, we understand that you have had been exposed to the glorious side of the man who harmed Pakistan on so many levels that no 'Bhutto' book can ever completely expose it. So your write-up is understandable. Let's pray that Pakistan never has to see a day where General Zia is glorified by the majority of the masses. And yes, you owe it to democracy that your article got published in a leading newspaper. Your Grandfather would have never allowed something so vile, had it been his time and were it even a bit contrary to his views.
He is sole responsible for Karachi's ethical ND sectarian war ND terrorism in whole Pakistan...
unfortunately young man, counting your grandfathers mis-deeds is not a case a case of where to start but where to stop. And his shadow will remain till the very existence of Pakistan and will be a major contributor to its demise if and when it happens. drugs, guns, racism, religious intolerance, extreme conservatism, terrorism, interference of agencies, creating and giving power to local ethnic parties and a general sense of 'jihalat' are just a few of the things that your grand dad was responsible for.
@Mohammad Zia Adnan Try going to a Shia or an Ahmadi and ask him what he thinks of Zia ul Haq. You live in a secular welfare state now. Why is that? You grandfather did his best to wipe out secularism and socialism in Pakistan. Ask a secular Pakistani what they think of your grandfather.
I feel so sorry for this kid. Apart from destroying Pakistan from within and digging its own grave, you are forgetting 'mard-e-momin's' role in black september? I wish i could beat the crap out of this kid and his future generations for morally, spiritually and phsyically destroying my home and my religion. May God be just with your grandfather!!
The great grand son of a self obsessed person get ur home work done properly living in london and posting such articles is a great past time get yourself back here in pakistan and see the mess which zia has created terrorism militants name all
Nice to see you adnan with the name of Zia , other wise people were thinking this name will disappear . you are right that media is still making blunder in the matter of Zia.The Original muslim league is also Zia League that is hi jacked by butts and chaudahries.Soon people will realize what zia was y he was martyred ... nice writting ti pay tribute to your grnad pa ...shaheed general zia ul haq ,,,,may ALLAH REST HIS SOUL IN PEACE..AAMEEN
REGARDS.
well i feel pity for this guy, he has tried his best to defend his grandfather, but no one can defend a criminal whose crimes are obvious
It is just a hate-speech against the Bhuttos. Zia ul Haq does not become good by saying Bhuttos were bad or worse. This simple logic the poor-silly-devilish neo-Zia boy cannot and will not understand.May be Zia-type evilness and dishonesty are inherited traits.
It is not easy for a grand son to know that his grandfather was a criminal. The standard response from the grand son would be that " he was my grand father" and leave it at that. However, I thought that it would be more complicated for the grand son if he was to learn that his grand father was a lunatic? But I did not reckon that the grand son would start attacking the political leadership of the times in defense of the late gradfather. The auther is a pub and must be excused for it is no fault of the family which he inherited.
Rex Minor
Thank god none of Zia's family came into any serious politics. He alone was enough to set this country back by 500 years.
It is understandable that every grandchild sees the grandfather as larger than life hero who can do nothing wrong. Unfortunately the writer has been deprived of this privilege. When he grows up he will comprehend the magnitude of damage done to this country by his grandfather. All our ills can be directly attributed to the actions of Gen. Zia. Unfortunate but true. Above all he had no business to rule this country.
Raise your hands if you agree that this American School 'despot' had nothing to do with writing this article. Except maybe typing his name in the byline?
When I read that you are london based student, my blood began to boil. All his life Zia portrayed himself as a guardian of Islam, banned everything that he deemed unislamic ,help establish chain of madrassas. Now his grandchild taking western education not a madrassa which partly responsible for the dire condition that we are in.
Dear writer, One can understand ur feelings as a grand-son but Zia violated the constitution, hanged an elected Prime Minister & leader of a big Political Party. He ruled country unconstitutionally for 11 years even he dismissed his own formed govt. (Junejo govt). Hundreds of thousands people were sent behind the bars or killed on his directions. People even minors & journalists were lashed publicly. Military & police humiliated thousands of people. He might have done some good things as described by you but he was/will remain the violator of constitution & his oath as well. He killed Bhutto, who promoted him, this shows that he wan not a man of good character. He allegedly killed Palestinians during his stay over there. One more example for u that a Renowned/Notorious Dacoit Parro Chandio was killed in an encounter during the era of Zia but Dacaoit's mother/relatives had same arguments, feelings & justifications like u that her son did well with poors. He robbed richmen & supported poors etc. I have sympathies with u bcz u have written what you were told by ur parents but reality is that he was a dictator & killer of many innocent people. I wud have appreciated if you have written some thing about his Plane crash as he was in command & security was in hands of army.
Dear Grandson, You tried to defend a person who can never be defended, the militancy and extremism in which the country badly plunged is due to the legacy of your grand father, it cost over 70000 innocent lives and no one knows how much we will have to suffer in future?
It is hard for any young person to visualize his grandfather as anything other than a benevolent person. I really hope that his statement "I found myself laughing at the baseless accusations that Bhutto levels against Zia and his family" was written in jest. He doesn't seem to be much older than 20 to be making assertive dismissals. The young man will learn more about his grandfather that will hopefully make him see the light.
Why aren't you in a Madrassa but studying in UK?He established 1000s of madrasas and encouraged pakistanis to get educated in madrassa. From where did you get the money?Remember your grandfather owned only a bike in 60s?.If you calculate the salary of your grandfather of 40 years service,it will not exceed Rs 3 Million, but your only one house in F-7 is worth 120 Million,he made assets worth billions.Have you ever asked your parents as to how they made fortunes? He destroyed every institution of this country,he is responsible for the terrorism that the poor people of this country are facing. He was the worst ruler this unfortunate country ever had..
In you runs the blood of a lion ,a warrior of Islam who in the face of over whelming odds took up the fight and defeated the USSR . I hope you will do something worth while in your life also .
Student at the American School - London.......ZIA's grand-son.......says it all.
Dear Zia Jr, Do me this favor and once (again hopefully) ask yourself the purpose behind writing this piece. No one cares about Zia vs Bhutto. What we are, however, suffering from is the former's legacy of Islamisation. When you have something to say about that I'm sure many of us will be all ears. M
Dear ADNAN, Please read Charlie Wilson,s Wars. Ur grandfather was nothing but a bigot. During his regime corruption was socialized in this unfortunate country. U can,t defend a hypocrite. He guarded interests of American Empire with complete dedication at cost of poor citizens of Pakistan. Zia is Pakistanis as Nazis are to Jews or even worst. He killed thousands of Palestinians when he was a brigadier. So ur grandfather was a true son of b**h.
@Al_Chemisto: "Thank democracy that you can publish an article criticizing democracy with an illogical piece full of fallacies. Grandpa Zia had never had the courage to let criticism on military govts get published!"
Sorry to burst your bubble Dude, but had been President Zia half of the Dictator like General Soharto of Indonesia let alone Saddam Hussain then all our beloved leaders of today have shinny Mausoleums (Mazars) unlike Sarray or Raiwind Palaces.
Benazir Bhutto did not even tolerate his own Brother Mir Murtaza Bhutto, he was no angel to Pakistani Establishment He was a Hi-Jacker & an outlawed (attacked and freed his gunmen from CIA Police Station in Karachi) and still not a single hair of his been damaged, but as soon he got his residence, he died like thirsty camel.
Welcome the feudal politics of Pakistan or should I say Larkana.
hope you will research and ponder.
regards,
Young man, I'm sure it is not easy growing up listening to vile things about your Grandfather. However, the sad truth is that most of it is true. He may not be solely responsible for where Pakistan is today but he certainly played a MAJOR role in it. I would not wish a ruler such as him on anyone. As far as Bhutto is concerned, she and her father made some critical mistakes but none were as bad as those made by zia. make peace with it.
"We never fled the country, never got whisked away by a sympathetic Middle Eastern despot"
Zia was the despot so there was no need and you are in American school in London.
Cut the poor guy some slack! Imagine living a life as zia UL haq's grandson! Becharay ko kabhee to phatna hi tha
One has to admit that Zia bashing has been in fashion in Pakistan for quite sometime now and it takes a lot of courage to stand up for him, even by his grandson. He may have been wrong on a lot of issues, but I'm sure he was correct in many too which never get any mention. Hindsight is 20/20 and we can all blame him for creating mujahideens in Kabul and Kashmir. But at the time he was seen as a bulwark against communist expansion and imminent existential threat to Pakistan. Just to show his courage, PAF shot down several intruding Soviet fighters. Where do we stand now on that score alone? How our "sovereignty' is raped by another superpower and our Political and Military leaders succumb before it, is heart-wrenching. The highest economic growth rate was achieved during his time. Pakistan was respected among Nations, especially Muslim countries which is sadly not the case now. The instantaneous crowd turn-up at his funeral depicted his popularity among the masses at the time. The never ending queue of foreign dignitaries show his respect as a world leader. I remember the Turkish President, PM, FM, Parliament Speaker, Chiefs of Army, Navy, Airforce all attended his funeral. US V.President, Secretaries of Defence and Foreign along with Centcom Chief attended. Today we are happy if a General comes here!!
You should write more often.
Now firstly, thank your grandfather for giving us the Shareef family and the Gillanis.
You assume that all people criticizing Gen Zia are either bhutto lovers or liberals.
There are many who dont belong to either of these categories.
Your grandfather has committed many blunders and they need to be looked at unbiasedly.
Siachin, corrupt politicians and bureaucracy are but a few of these crimes which must be looked at dispassionately.
@Nikki: Today Pakistan is suffering from the legacy of 'strategic depth' initiated by Zia and Gen Hamid Gul resulting in the arms and drug culture that has become rampant. Religious extremism is another gift we inherited. What's more - his "godson" is now ruling the country.
Kid please notice the way that your grand dad has gifted Pakistan with violence, lack of tollerance and killing that has taken place as result.
It is wrong to assume and focus on the narrative as Zia Versus Bhuttos. It was Zia versus its own people!.
You need to read, feel and change the eye hole that you look through, the field of destruction left behind by ZIa is too wide to ignore!
Zia might have been a patriot at heart but he is responsible for destroying the fabric of the country due to usurping power illegally.
The article is one sided, but correct. Not many lies, unlike the one sided versions of Bhutto-Zardari monachy, and now Sharif Brothers monarchy.
Actually, MOST ACTS of Gen. Zia, Bhutto-Zardari and Sharif brothers are INDEFENSIBLE !
A very good attempt by a grandson of a Soldier. It’s time to bring the true facts of the past into reality. There may be bad decisions under him but it also happens in democracy in the last many years.
This is true that Mr. Zia stayed in Pakistan till the end of his life and fight for the right in Pakistan boarder against Russians military valiantly. He also did courageous attempts as a politicians against India for streamlining the bad situation between two countries. He is pious man with an extraordinary military skills.
The negative side is his aggressive behaviors to manage the circumstance politically within the country which make him controversial. The hard and forced decisions depicts his black image in the minds of growing generation which resulted anger and retaliation.
It’s time to soften the ugly image of the past by showing positive side of Pakistan. We need to unite people on the point of love rather than hatred. .
I am not a BB fan or PPP supporter and even then your points sounds ridiculous! If she was so awful and wrong, it still doesn't make your grandfather right or good kiddo!
It can only happen in Pakistan, that a dictator grand children came to his defence.the dictator who totally change the psyche of our society. He was the the most hateful character of our society.
I have followed Pakistani politics since 1972. Objectively speaking General Zia Ul Haque was the best ruler of Pakistan in recent memory. He initiated good relations with India. He is the father of modern day cricket, he invited Indian team to Pakistan in 1978. Though India lost to Mushtaq's majestic Pakistani team 0-2, but since then cricket has become a world sport. General Zia Ul Haque wanted lazy Pakistanis to be disciplined and efficient. What he got for his vision for Pakistan? Hate, hate and more hate. I see a calculated conspiracy to side line persons like Sir Khizer Hayat Khan and General Zia Ul Haque in Pakistan.
Dear Kid,
You did not have to live through your grandfathers regime ..
We did ..
Will not wish the experience on my worst enemy ..
I'm with this kid on many things. Bhutto, not Zia was responsible for putting this country on the wheels of extremism. Zia simply inflated those wheels and set them in motion.
Aseefa had no merit heading polio apart from the fact that she was zardari's daughter. What goes around comes around.
Dear young Zia Adnan,
It takes courage to write an essay about the most reviled military dictator our nation was benighted with. At the outset however let me say that the sins of the father are NOT that of the son, and therefore no matter how heineous the crimes committed by any of our ancestors, we are NOT responsible for them. What we ARE responsible for our is our actions and that would include either condemning or condoning those crimes.
You are fortunate to be studying at a prestigious institute where you are no doubt getting exposure to some fine education and multiculturalism. I hope you have the courage to learn the true history, without, as you admit at the start of your article, bias just because you happen to have the good luck (wealth) and bad luck (heritage) of the dictator's family. Again, neither me nor any other liberal will blame you for the actions of your grandfather or any other family member, you are just another normal human being.
If you do read history without any bias, you will find that Zia Ul Haq was an oppressor of a high degree, but worse, his vision was to regress Pakistan to the iron age. He introduced the Arabization whose fruits are visible everywhere in our culture now. Yes, the Bhuttos were corrupt also, but by attacking them you can not absolve your grandfather of his sins.
Tell me this: why are you studying in London and not in some university or school in Saudi Arabia? Where will you choose to live and work after your education is complete? If the answer is that you choose London or any other western city because they are more civilized and modern and humane, then by deed you repudiate EVERYTHING you grandfather stood for, and we would expect you to condemn his worldview and selfish power grab by using religion before you condemn anyone else.
Regards, Uzair
Its easy to write about your dear grandpa while having fun with all the money and legacy of money you are left with. Just dont do it anymore to us and pls do us all a favor: dont ever come back to pakistan. Hope you enjoy life with the mentors of your grandpa pls (london belongs to both middle east and england now).. We have tens of thousands more dead bodies to clear up before we go anywhere near cleansing the country of the mess he created.
you are defending the indefensible, kid.
i pity u - for ur ignorance
So what your saying is, Zia wasnt that bad because Benazir might have been on par with him in terms of misuse of power? By creating a false dichotomy in which somehow nepotism and greed become the only judging factors is like asserting that apples are superior to oranges for their red color and crunchy bite. One cannot make this comparison.

The only merit I see in this article is that it has been written by Zia's grandson. Nice try junior but you need to read up more history by independent historians & maybe then you will come to know the truth & accept it. Respecting the disclaimer in the start can't say anything else.
Zia Ul Haq seemed to think of himself as a religious man fighting a religious fight - at least that's the way he presented himself. I was shocked at watching a UN speech presenting General Zia where the first half seems to be centered around a religious ceremony. What is the meaning of this religious exhibitionism, so common among many in S. Asia and the Middle East, when many masking themselves with religious exhibitionism have indulged in less than ethical practices including ordering executions? For reference, here is the speech I have mentioned: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fuUFkPFpQrY
What a joke this article is by the "Grandson" of a "Grand" dictator Gen. Munafiq ul Haq......!!!! The country is in a mess thanks to the legacy left by his grandfather.....a legacy of religious extremism and hatred. And he lives in London and is studying there and is actually writing this piece of crap!!!!!
Nice to know Zia ul Haq’s grandson has some bend towards writing. Witty stuff.
While martial law does stunt the growth of democracy, the supposed democratic forces in the country have only allowed a demo-dictatorship to grow that serves the needs of a few.
Not a Zia supporter, but this was a well-researched write-up. It’s about time we faced the music and saw the ‘other’ side of the coin – I remember Karachi in the 90s, and it was worse than any martial law this country has seen. And to be honest, there wasn’t any beating around the bush with martial law – it was what it was. While the author doesn’t delve deep into the things Zia was responsible for, he is spot on in the closing sentence. It seems that the democratic forces in our country are trying to do what dictatorships in other countries do – turn their own families into THE ruling family.
V Convincing, keep it up God bless you.

Sounds like the Israeli defense: how dare the world call us out for committing war crimes, colonizing Palestinian land, and oppressing a civilian population, when others do it too! That Zia's own biological minion cannot point to any of his achievements is very telling, and speaks volumes regarding Zia's destructive impact on Pakistan.
It is amazing how much the minions of ex and current rulers expend their energy in back biting and bickering like in-laws in an extended family. This article sheds light on the general malaise that has afflicted Pakistan. A tremendous amount of energy is wasted on trying to prove the other person wrong . You don't even need home grown terrorists to destroy the spirit of a nation. Zia Adnan is just one gaudy example of a suffocating attitude that has overtaken Pakistani psyche, a mind set that will snuff out and destroy the nation and aspirations of its citizens.
Zia Sahib did not pass on mantle of his power to his son, daughter or spouse because he himself had plans to stay in power for next thousand years but unfortunately God had other plans.
He was the worst ruler Pakistan ever had. He is the reason for all the terrorism that we have in Pakistan.
