Independence Day: Modi sends greetings to Pakistan

Message comes two days after Modi accused Pakistan of waging a ‘proxy war’ in Kashmir

On the occasion of Pakistan’s Independence Day, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the country on Thursday. Posting on microblogging website Twitter, the Indian premier said, “On the occasion of their Independence Day, I convey my greetings to the people of Pakistan”. The message comes two days after Modi accused Pakistan of waging a ‘proxy war’ in the disputed state of Kashmir. New Delhi has repeatedly accused Pakistan of intruding the Kargil area 15 years ago, a move that had triggered a confrontation between the two countries killing 1,000 on both sides. Since 1999, India has maintained a heavy military presence in Kargil in the Ladakh region of Kashmir.
