Explosive attempt: Bomb successfully defused outside police station

KARACHI:

Police officials narrowly escaped a bombing attempt after they discovered a bomb planted on a motorcycle outside the Jamshed Quarter police station on Monday.

An improvised explosive device was planted on a motorcycle parked near the Jamshed Quarter police station, where an office of the special branch of police is also located. Police officials said that they checked the motorcycle at around 4:30am and informed the bomb disposal squad (BDS) as soon as they discovered the bomb. The said that the motorcycle was parked between the police station and the Special Branch office and was probably planted to target the police.

Upon receiving the information, two teams of BDS experts reached the site and cordoned off the area. Since it was suspected that the bomb may be linked to a cell phone device, cell phone jammers were also installed. The bomb was successfully defused after two and a half-hours.

According to them, the bomb weight over five kilogrammes, and contained ball bearings and nut bolts, and required a cell phone device for detonation. On the other hand, police investigators have traced the owner of the motorcycle, Ismail.

Police are conducting raids to catch him but have so far been unsuccessful. Officials said that the militants are likely behind the incident, and intended to attack and kill the law enforcers.
