Maverick lawmaker Jamshed Dasti on Sunday counted himself as a witness to an agreement forged between Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) over giving full indemnity to former president Pervez Musharraf and allowing him a safe exit.
“I was part of the meeting [between PPP and PML-N] to discuss the issue [of Musharraf’s exit],” he told The Express Tribune on Sunday. “Both sides agreed to the deal so as not to create a conflict between the military establishment and political parties,” he said.
The independent lawmaker – who was part of the PPP government that preceded the incumbent PML-N government – accused PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari and other party leaders of lying about the matter. “Only [former premier] Yousaf Raza Gilani is telling the truth,” he said.
According to Dasti, the PPP and PML-N leadership has a clandestine agreement to deny the existence of any deal over Musharraf. “Both parties agreed that though they would create a hue and cry over Musharraf, they would not take any legal action.”
Both are wrongfully denying [the existence of a deal over Musharraf]… the issue was even discussed at both parties’ central committee meetings after being discussed between Zardari and Nawaz,” the MNA said.
Dasti said when the deal was reached, Musharraf was told he would face no problem moving either inside or outside the country. “Musharraf was even assured that he would be allowed to form a party and take part in politics.”
PML-N is now reneging on this agreement, he added.
According to the lawmaker, the governments of Saudi Arabia, United States and Britain, and former army chief Gen (retd) Ashfaq Parvez Kayani were the guarantors of Musharraf. He claimed all of them are currently unhappy with the PML-N’s ‘deceitful’ behaviour over the issue.
PML-N had no deal regarding Musharraf: Pervaiz Rashid
Information Minister Pervaiz Rashid, however, refuted claims that the ruling PML-N was part of any deal concerning Musharraf.
He pointed out that the statements made by different PPP leaders regarding the matter were contradictory. “Even Musharraf has denied having any deal with the government,” he said.
The minister added that PML-N would never be part of any move against the law and Constitution.
On the other hand, in response to a question about Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Shah Mehmood Qureshi’s comments that there would be ‘bloodshed’ if the govt held Independence Day celebrations at the same place and time as the party’s ‘tsunami’ march, Rashid said the statement showed PTI has a ‘policy of bloodshed’.
He said similar language was used by Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) chief Tahirul Qadri “and look what happened.”
“The statements reflect both PAT and PTI’s policy of bloodshed,” he added.

Mr Dasti! I think you are telling the truth but who asked you??
@i4shad: Not a single political leader has been hung by the Army except Bhutto and the Zia episode. Why is Musharraf being made to pay for the sins of Zia's vindictive nature? The former was always much more magnanimous against all his adversaries including the Lords of Raiwind.
@Sami: The deal included allowing him to move freely and even stand up a political party. Don't twist facts with your own interpretation.
The PML-N is a bunch of shameless liars. The same goes for the corrupt PPP leadership of Zardari. Pakistan is being held hostage to the corruption, lies and deceit of two dishonest clans i.e. Sharifs and Zardaris.
@Anjum Arshi: 800,000 facebook fans figure is from 2012,currently it is almost 2 million,Musharraf never claimed all the people of Pakistan support him.
as usual PML-N keeping up its tradition denying any agreed deal...
The court will release Musarraf due to lack of required evidence . There is no need of any deal .
Didn't we all safely assumed that much? What else would you expect from them, Noon-league is the masters of under the table deals...
Why is it so complicated to understand?. Musharraf was indeed given a safe exit .He lived in Pakistan for number of months after he left presidency without being bothered. Then probabaly seeing no immidiate chances back to power he shifted abroad of his own accord. No ECL. At the time of elections his dreamt of being the redeemer again and agaisnt everyones advice , even Kayani he cam back .Then courts took up his case . The reality is that everyone wanted him to be away from politics but he coudlnt. Now face the music like a loin and dont be a jackal. Yet it is stupid for NS to think he can win this. establishement is too powerful in this country and they always get willing parterns to derail democracy.
Actually Nawaz Sharif is taking his personal revenge from Musharraf and only wants to send Musharraf to jail as Musharraf sent him to jail and for this purpose Nawaz Sharif is never caring his government because thus his government can be removed any time because in a personal meeting between Ch. Nisar and Nawaz Sharif Ch. Nisar told Nawaz Sharif that let Musharraf leave Pakistan other wise the government can be removed but Nawaz Sharif replied clearly that doesn't matter the government is removed but Musharraf can never be allowed to leave Pakistan and in other words Nawaz Sharif is never learning any lessons from his past's bitter experience and still repeating the same committed mistake in 1999.....
@i4shad: You forget very conveniently the controversies emanating from retd. ex-Chief Justice Iftikhar M. Choudhary's son. We all felt deeply for him and made him our hero but he never did convict anyone except PM Gilani for about 30 seconds. It was he who took oath under Musharraf's PCO. The country moved ahead under Musharraf whereas, now it is at a standstill. Salams
SIMILAR STANCE OF PML-N LEADERSHIP AS WAS IN PAST ! PAST - No deal with Musharaf - But left for JEDDAH THIS TIME - No deal with Musharaf - OUTCOME will be they same.
If Shah Mehmoud actually said that then he should be made to vacate his seat based on electoral laws because he is inciting people to or promoting violence.
How many political leaders including a prime minister have been hanged by the Army? How come there's so much hue and cry over prosecuting a general who everybody agrees broke the law and perverted the constitution
This man is back??? I guess it's the 'feeding the monster' phenomenon (too much space to fill in newspapers and TV), that these characters creep in. Does he have any evidence? Even if there was a 'deal', it was probably off when the Commando came back, counting on his 800,000 fans on the facebook (which he believes represent the entire Pakistan, including the 97% who do not have access to the internet). Well, he will be gone soon, so no worries.
This doesn't come as a surprise. Even though they didn't admit publicly, we all are aware of this deal.
He was given safe exit and he enjoyed safe passage too. Later he returned to do politics and face courts. Mr. Gillani o Dasti, now consider Mr. Musharraf as politician not as a General. Now he is one of you guys not from army. Understand it please.
Dasti is narrating the actual real facts. How sad is the state of politics in Pakistan, that even the true facts are denied
