Another member of a village defence committee was killed in a targeted attack orchestrated by unidentified gunmen in Shakardara area of Matta tehsil on Wednesday evening.
According to the police, unidentified men opened fire at village defence committee member Khan Sahib near his residence just before Iftar, killing Khan on the spot. The deceased was said to be an active member of the defence committee and a vociferous opponent of extremism.
Soon after the incident, security forces cordoned off the area and started a search operation in Shakardara, Ningolai and Barabandai while the police registered an FIR against unidentified culprits.
According to residents of the area, security forces have imposed a curfew for an indefinite time with strict monitoring at check points at Ningolai, Bandai and Kanju villages. Movement of vehicles has also been restricted in some other areas.
This is the second incident of its kind in the week. A few days earlier, two other defence committee members were critically injured in a gun attack.
