ISLAMABAD:

The timings for obtaining polio vaccination certificates from the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims) have been changed in light of Ramazan, according to the Vice-Chancellor of Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Medical University, Professor Javed Akram.

“We have changed the timings of polio vaccination because of Ramazan,” Akram told journalists during an inspection of the polio vaccination counter at the hospital’s courtesy centre on Tuesday.

“The centre will remain operative from 8:30pm to 10:30pm,” said the vice chancellor, adding the move followed several complaints from people who said they were unable to go to the hospital due to Ramazan.

“All our counters and relevant staff, along with the head of the polio vaccination centre, will be present to issue polio vaccination cards to people intending to travel abroad,” he said.

During the inspection, vaccination centre in charge Dr Muthair Shah, said over 20,000 people planning to travel abroad have been vaccinated since the centre’s inception.

Speaking at a centre established for internally displaced persons (IDP) from North Waziristan, Akram said two mobile hospitals have already been dispatched to Bannu, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and will remain functional till the completion of Operation Zarb-e-Azb.

“The units have a laboratory, an X-ray machine and an operation theatre and will remain in the use of the army to provide medical assistance to IDPs,” he said.
