Grenade attack on mosque near Peshawar

A grenade attack on a mosque during Isha prayers in Sulaiman Khel kills five people, 25 injured.

Unidentified men hurled four grenades into a mosque during Isha prayers in the Sulaiman Khel area of Badhber, located 20km from Peshawar on Friday evening.

This is the second incident of terrorism in a mosque within the space of 24 hours. The first one took place in a mosque in Darra Adam Khel which killed 50 people and injured more than 100 others.

Casualties

Express News correspondent Jehangir Shehzad reports that five people have died, while 26 people have been injured.

Nature of attack

According to the bomb disposal squad the explosion was the result of four grenades being thrown at worshippers by unknown persons.


Eye witnesses also said that there was firing outside the mosque prior to grenades being hurled inside the building. The attack left nearby buildings damaged as well.

Rescue efforts

Emergency has been declared in the Lady Reading Hospital as many of those critically wounded are being treated. According to Express News correspondent Ehtesham Bashir, three bodies have been received while 21 injured including three injured children have also been brought in so far.

Blast site

According to Jehangir Shehzad, the area where the explosion occurred is not very populated and security arrangements are usually light to non-existent in the region.

At the moment of the blast around 70 people were present in the mosque.
