Anti-Muslim massacres of Gujrat in 1969, Moradabad in 1980, Nellie in 1983, Bhagalpur in 1989, with an accumulated death toll of more than 10,000, followed by the Babri Mosque-related Bombay riots of 1992 and the Gujrat massacre in 2002; all have a pattern of brutality and state collusion or inaction. Similarly, anti-Muslim violence in Buddhist Myanmar in 2013 and Sri Lanka in 2014 have the same features. Extremism, fed on a jihadist narrative, is also manifesting itself with similar brutality and state collusion towards other religions. Despite the fact that Muslim majority countries in South Asia have insignificant minorities, a constant sense of fear has gripped them.
Religion, as a solution to all the woes that the impoverished populations of South Asia faces, coupled with mournful references to past persecutions and fear of future expansion and domination by rival faiths, form the cardinal principles of violent ideologies. Restoration of the ‘golden era’ of the distant past where one’s religion ruled the world is an objective that sufficiently motivates large sections of society to become part of the ‘noble’ cause. Young devotees are prepared from a very tender age to be organised later into preachers, trainers and foot soldiers to spread this ideology, be it the RSS of India, the 969 movements of Burma, the BBS in Sri Lanka or the TTP in Pakistan. In many cases, state patronisation is also evident.
Consequently, religious revivalist movements are fast taking centre stage in South Asia — currently divided into nine states. Hindu revivalist movements in India are now almost two centuries old, having reached its zenith with Narendra Modi, a parcharak of the RSS. Nepal, with a dominating Hindu majority and Bhutan with a sizeable Hindu minority population, are naturally influenced by what happens in India. Buddhist revivalism is also emerging with equal force in Burma, Sri Lanka and Bhutan. The element of mass violence was added in Buddhist revivalism leading to deaths of many Muslims by the 969 Movement in Myanmar. And now, it has spread to Sri Lanka where the BBS has resorted to mob violence against the Muslim minority.
This holistic picture does not augur well for the dream of a peaceful South Asia, which will have implications for Pakistan. With more anti-Muslim violence in the neighbourhood, radicalism and the jihadist narrative will find more space to operate with added pressure on our state, which is already struggling hard to restore its writ. More radicalisation here will generate more apprehensions, hence more anti-Muslim violence in other South Asian countries. Is this the vicious circle of actions and reactions with enhanced levels of hate, fear and bloodshed the destiny we are heading for this is a question that merits the consideration of leaders in South Asia.

@Sarwar: It actually predates that. It started when invaders destroyed Nalanda and the Buddhist libraries burnt for six months.
Sir stop worrying about Muslims in Sri Lanka and instead worry your IDPs that Punjab and Sind are unwilling to accept.
In other news, Sri Lanka withdrew the isa on arrival facility from Pakistan because of too many asylum seekers.
So clearly with all its problems, Muslims seem yo prefer Sri Lanka to the land of the pure.
An excellent article and I am surprised to see the comments of various readers who are justifying the riots/killing of Muslims in Sri-Lanka on the situation in Pakistan. I always presume that Budhist are peaceful people and Muslims and the other religious people of Sri-Lanka are living peacefully. The latest riots that are harming Muslims will also be bad for the progress of Sri-Lanka who is just trying to recover from the war with Tamil nationals. Sri-Lankan Government is friendly to Pakistan and Bangaldesh and should take this matter seriously and try its best to protect all the nationals of Sri-Lanka including Muslims, Tamils, and Budhist.
"Religion-based clashes, if they randomly occur hither and thither, should not be a cause of worry when properly tackled by impartial and effective state authorities"
As they are in Pakistan... where religious minorities have full protection and security thus giving Pakistanis the Moral Authority to dictate to less responsible nations...
You should have also explained the reason for all that and that is demand for Sharia. India has already give 25% of it's land as per Indian Muslims percentage for Indian Muslims for the creation of Pakistan in 1947. You should have also included UN reports on riots in India which says 93% of them are started by Muslims.
If all the countries you mentioned are so bad then how come their Muslims population is on the rise. You are failed to explain why so many Indian Muslims are also member of RSS.
I am amazed at how people try to connect countries together as if everything is connected.
Yes, there is Muslim secterianism in Syria. In Iraq. Even in Pakistan. But if Muslim secterianism cease to exist right now, will oppression of Muslims in Sri Lanka automatically stop? NO. It will not. Because the anti-Muslim violence in Sri Lanka, and in Myanmar, is not rooted in what other Muslims in other countries do. It is rooted in some weird form of Buddhist extremism.
Extremism is not limited to Muslims only. Read about this guy

Virkaul,
And your house is in order? So what give you guys the right to protest about how Hindus are being treated anywhere else given how you treat each other?
your concern is valid. I think all the terrorism and jihad in pakistan is the result of muslim persecution in rest of the world. Pakistan must do something. T
@Zeeshan:
You wrote: "a Pakistani, Indians killed Indians too but that didn’t stop them crying for Hindus in Bangladesh, Pakistan and Kashmir and lecturing others on how to treat Hindus."
Never heard of any Hindu crying for Hindus in Bangladesh, Pakistan and Kashmir and lecturing others on how to treat Hindus. This is the precise characteristic of Muslims of Pakistan. Never heard of any Muslim from Middle East crying for Muslims in India, Burma or Pakistan. Please look inside your home for solution of current problems you are facing otherwise it will be too late.
Now Buddhist are against Muslims? Didn't we help Sri Lanka to get rid of LTTE?
Here's a question: Why kills the most Muslims? a. Muslims b. People of other religions. Once you answer that question, you will get out of the persecution complex. Time even for some introspection maybe?
lankan muslims are peaceful business inspired people, they lived harmony with every community, even we tried to help muslims from mobs but our cant do much the recent attack was carried by sri lankan defence ministry and sri lankan army and it also funding buddhists militan groups to attack muslims and christians
Why? Why is this happening all over the world?
Tamils were under attack for years in Sri Lanka with support of countries like Pakistan. That s still on going.... It was 1000 times worse that what happened to Muslims...where were Pakistani journalists at that time.... So selfish and pure discrimination....
@Nek-banda: only Introspect is need for this cult of community, remaining everything is fine... question is do they have is what reality ?
Even more muslims are under attack in Iraq why dont you speak.... no nuts under you?
The situation of Muslims in Sri Lanka is the worst compared to all South Asian countries. In Sri Lanka, there is not a single political party which ready to speak for Sri Lankan muslims, there is a complete media-embargo, not even a single media channel/newspaper has covered the attacks.
Few civil ppl, who reported the incident has been targeted. A monk who criticize BBS has been attached and circumcised accused as Muslim Monk. The worst part is Police has booked case against the Monk accusing him of tying himself and circumcising himself .
Pakistan is yet to condemn the Anti-Muslim attacks in Sri Lanka. The truth is Pakistan does not care of Muslims it is just Anti-Indian.
very old story ha... The writer is from Pakistan but he forgot to mention about the attacks carried by the Pakistani Army and USA against Muslims. Also the attack in Afghanistan and Iraq. And other attacks like Sunni and other Muslim groups. Therefore we has to say that this article dont have a meaning but to dig a hole to jump in.
Why dont you keep a world map infront of you and mark out those countries with a considerable muslim population which are at peace?
@Zeeshan: Where?
@Zeeshan: It is not humanity but questioning author's audacity to question others when his house itself is not in order.
There are Christians and Hindu minorities in srilanka, no problem with majority Buddhist. Same in burma, same in India, same everywhere. I am waiting for muslims to write a article on common factor in all this. I know we will never see such self reflextion done by muslims. WHY? worried what about the truth? ..
Muslims are getting killed every where?(south asia, Europe, middle east) ...no place for Muslims.. ???
Hey nice one,I didn't think of that !
@AMKhan: Hilarious !!
*widely present
This is totally unacceptable....we must do something...after all we are the only 'Muslim Welfare State' in the world.
No talk about muslims in Xinjaing?
@GP65,
"What about Muslims under attack in Syria, Iraq, Pakistan?"
What about them? Are you Indians going to take them in? Where do you Indians find this instant humanity toward Muslims? When they are being killed by anyone who are not Indians?
Adnan, There are religious conflicts in some 26 countries around the world and they all involve Muslims. They quarrel with every other religion where ever they live. Don't you think there must be some thing fundamentally wrong with Islam or at least in the perception of Islam? In my view is Islam meant for only separate Islamic countries and not for secular countries. So the solution would be for the all the Islamic countries to take in all the Muslims living in other secular countries and let them live in peace. Then who cares, they can kill each other in sectarian wars among them selves!
Why muslims are under attack everywhere throughout the world, did you ever try to find out ?
a Pakistani,
Indians killed Indians too but that didn't stop them crying for Hindus in Bangladesh, Pakistan and Kashmir and lecturing others on how to treat Hindus.
Anti-Muslim and anti-Islam sentiments among Indians and Sri Lankans are not new phenomena. It's only when Muslims are killed that these deeply woven and widely presence sentiments among Indians and Sri Lankans are spoken loudly. Most other time, these sentiments are swept under the rug.
What about Muslims under attack in Syria, Iraq, Pakistan?
Its the pot calling the kettle black .
The article focuses on how Muslims are displaced but has no word for the minorities in Muslim lands who have been persecuted and often forced to flee for their lives and beliefs.the immediate example is that of the Kashmir Pundits who were hounded out and are now living as refugees in their own homeland!
This is simply unacceptable. The time for action is now. Jinnawardene, the great Sri Lankan leader, has already demanded that the top-left corner of Sri Lanka be made into a new country called Srilankistan, where the muslims of Sri Lanka may live free in order to kill each other. We Pakistanis must stand united behind him.
The quest for peace in South Asia can only be reached by speaking the truth ... and not narrating half-truths and one sided anecdotes. Any discussion like this has to include religious violence against minorities in Muslim majority Pakistan or Bangladesh.
Also the narrative about "minority persecution" is a western construct based on Christian persecution of Jews. In the real world, it is also possible for minorities to persecute the majority. Syria is a good example where the minority Alawites dominate & persecute the Sunni majority etc.
"As if the anti-Muslim surge in India and Myanmar wasn’t horrible enough, Sri Lanka’s recently joining the club has rung many alarm bells among the Muslims of South Asia."
When will the alarm bells ring in Muslim countries where not only the minorities have been annihilated, but more Muslims have been killed and still being killed by Muslims themselves ? I am yet to read Pakistani Muslims condemning the recent mass killings in Iraq. Muslims are being bombed in Syria and Pakistan. Ever heard something similar in India ? People like this author have moral authority to lecture others when more Muslims are being killed yearly in Pakistan than the total killed in other south Asian countries. By the way, I have not include the massacre carried out by your pure army in east while East Pakistan.
Randhawa sahib Our credibility in the international community will go further down if we claim radicalization inside Pakistan is because of anti muslim violence in neighbhouring countries.
We are 98% muslim still there is so much anti-Muslim violence inside pakistan. let's be realistic. we are not and we cannot be custodians of muslims in other countries when we cannot provide peace to muslims inside pakistn.
Here we go again, give it a rest man
