Shabbir bags 10th CNS Open golf title

Defending champion Waheed finishes fourth.

KARACHI: Shabbir Iqbal succeeded in maintaining his fine form on the final day to clinch his 10th major title of the UMA 19th Chief of Naval Staff (CNS) Open Golf Championship at the Karachi Golf Club (KGC) on Sunday.

Shabbir, who started off with a par score 72 in the first round, improved his performance in round two with a score of two under-par 142. He leapfrogged to third spot on day three after firing a four under-par 68 and played impressively on the final day to win the men’s professional title by finishing with a five-under par 277 score.

Mohammad Munir finished second with 281 and Mohammad Tariq followed him in third position with 285. Defending champion Waheed Baloch was left lurking at the fourth spot along with Immad Hussain and Muhammad Ashfaq with a score of 286 each.

Meanwhile, Waseem Rana won the amateur event after carding 299 ahead of Zulfiqar Ali’s 301. Ghazanfar Mehmood was third with a score of 305.

The senior’s professional title was clinched by Ghaffar Ahmed of Rawalpindi, while Akhtar Ali of the Lahore Golf Club grabbed the second spot.

In other events, Naghmana Atif and Humera Khalid both won the ladies title, while the ‘Veterans 09 holes’ was dominated by Syed Fazle Jafar.

The Juniors A title was won by Abdul Rehman, while Master Junaid Irfan triumphed in the Juniors B category. Wing Commander Nasim Z Baig won the seniors title.
