KARACHI: The Crime Investigation Department’s (CID) Anti Extremists Cell (AEC) has claimed to have killed an alleged gang war commander Sohail alias Dada during an encounter on Wednesday night.

According to AEC officials, their team conducted a raid on a suspected location in Lakad Ground, Napier in Karachi after a tip off.

During the raid, suspected criminals opened firing at the AEC team. In the ensuing exchange of fire, Sohail alias Dada was fatally injured while his accomplices managed to flee.

According to police, Dada was wanted in more than a hundred cases of target killings of political workers, attacks on police, extortion and kidnaping for ransom. He was affiliated with Uzair Baloch group and was serving as a commander of the group in Malir. Given his exploits in Malir Ansu Goth, the Sindh government had placed a Rs500,000 bounty on his head.

Following the raid, his body was moved to Civil Hospital.

As news of the attack broke, parts of Malir and Lyari became tense and there were reports of armed gangsters resorting to indiscriminate fire in these areas causing a partial suspension of routine and commercial activities.

Extra contingents of law enforcers including police and Rangers were dispatched to Lyari and Malir to control the situation.

Meanwhile, an alleged militant was killed by the Sindh Rangers during a raid on a suspected hideout in the Cottage Industrial Area of Muhammad Khan Colony, Ittehad Town.

The suspected militant was later identified as Imran alias Omar alias Qari, affiliated with Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) Swat.

A Rangers spokesperson said that the deceased militant was involved attacks on army and FC camps by planting improvised explosive devices (IEDs) to target troop convoys in Swat.

In Karachi, Qari had established the TTP Swat group in Manghopir and was involved in over 20 killings of police, Rangers and political workers. He was also involved in the rickshaw borne IED bombing on the eve of general elections 2013 to target ANP leader Bashir Jan in Orangi that claimed at least nine lives in April 2013.
