The woman said she had gone to the station overnight on Monday in the state's Hamirpur district to seek her husband's release when she was attacked.
"At 11:30pm when there was no one in the room the sub-inspector took me to his room and raped me inside the police station," the woman told CNN-IBN.
The woman filed a complaint with a senior officer on Wednesday over the attack, which allegedly occurred when she refused to pay a bribe to secure the release of her husband.
"The procedure will be followed, the victim has filed a complaint and the guilty will be arrested soon," Virendra Kumar Shekhar, a police official from Hamirpur, said.
Sub-inspector Balbir Singh said a criminal case had been lodged against four officers from the station.
The case is the latest in a string of horrific rapes and murders in Uttar Pradesh, India's most populous state, where its chief minister Akhilesh Yadav is under growing political pressure over his handling of law and order.
Late last month, two girls, aged 12 and 14, were gang-raped and lynched in their village. They were attacked after going into a field to relieve themselves at night because they did not have a toilet at home.
Their families refused to cut the bodies down from the tree for hours in protest, saying police had failed to take action against the attackers because the girls were from a low caste.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday urged all politicians to work together to protect women, in his first comments on the issue since the hanging of the girls sparked public outrage.
Modi warned politicians against "politicising rape", saying they were "playing with the dignity of women" in his first speech to parliament since sweeping to power at last month's national elections.
India brought in tougher laws last year against sexual offenders after the fatal gang-rape of a student in New Delhi in December 2012, but they have failed to stem the tide of violence against women.
Also on Wednesday, a 45-year-old woman was found hanging from a tree in Uttar Pradesh, with her family saying she had been raped and murdered.
A police officer said they were questioning five men over the incident, which occurred several kilometres from her home in Bahraich district.
"They (her husband and son) have alleged that the woman, before being strung up from the tree, was raped and murdered by these men," district superintendent Happy Guptan told AFP.

@Lol Most of those cases surfaced are from UP state rest all except UP and Bihar have normal crime rate, like any states of any country. In fact even including UP Bihar, india fairs better than most country for better laws, lesser crimes per capita. In UP its is not just rape, but abduction, recent killing of opposition bjp party 3 members in a week, gundaism, looting, extortion, corruption etc are happening daily. This state is currently under the rule of SP party headed by mulayam singh/azam khan duo so-called secular party (covertly communal to fan tension between communities, than under the garb of sole protector of all people, take their votes and come to power). They are most corrupt party and whenever they come to power the law and order flys out of window. There's no check and balance there.. People who are corrupt and loyal to their party gets all govt post. Due to which all goons have free run to kill, extort, target other party leaders or woman/male/children related violence. They side with the criminals. These scenario won't change unless the politics of fear of religion/caste goes and these so-called corrupt secular party SP losses. Bihar is on progress. But UP people will have to wait 2 more years for fresh govt party to come and reset law and order in their state. Till then such crimes will happen under SP rule, hyperboles in media will take place, targeting their govt as well as from the opposition for TRP/potshots/preparation for upcoming election will take place with battle cry in their state.Even after all these in india as a whole we have less number of crimes for 121 crores in a country than those countries where population runs in one crore/18crore and rape crimes runs more than us in their society.
ET so many accusation, allow me to respond to those finger pointing. Basic common sense. India is second most populated country in the world. 17% of world population lives there. In 20 years it's going to be most populated country. India is bound to have more cases because of more number of people. So the numbers of heads of robbers, beggars, billionaires, thugs, good people, bad people, criminals will be more compared to less populated country..America is third most populated yet its number 1 in these crimes. South Africa, Sweden population is only around 4.5 crore, 95lakhs. yet it is 2nd and 3rd in rape cases around the world not india. What does that tell you, where does the problem lie? Sweden pop is roughly the size of our "one" state Himachal Pradesh compare them to the crime list of world, Himachal Pradesh crimes will vanish. France,uk, Germany, Belgium, sweden too figure in top ten list when there population is mere in lakhs or 5crore list and you are comparing that with india's 1.25billion+ yet they have more cases per capita. Indis is union differnt language, culture of 30 states and 7unions. If you take count of union of Europe same way they will surpass even america to become number 1 in such crimes, because individually alone these countries figure ahead of us. In india have vibrant civil society who fights back sensationalise it due to cut throat competitive TRPistic media. In many religious/dictator/communist country, its state controlls the media, censure news or stigmatise it against women. Your own country you need 4 witness, DNA test is rejected laws go against woman stigmatising them.. How many dare to speak against these stigma? And even when they do they have never got justice. We have a vibrant civil society, media, judiciary that sees to it that justice is served.
@Mega: oh laws, then why are there so many rape cases in your "Incredible india" ?
@John B: Of course there is no rape problem in India, you are right. Go ahead and sweep it under the rug. We will also not hear "boo" from you about all the unreported rape incidents in India also. How did you determine that "AFP" is biased in this situation????
"the latest in a string of shocking"
The people who write these stories must now concede the fact that stories regarding atrocities committed against women in Retarded cultures like India & Pakistan are no longer considered "Shocking"...
@stellar. Focus ok kpk, ajk, Punjab were same type cases are reported daily. We at least have stringent laws and fast track court. You dnt even have those. Btw For your info america has maximum rape cases in the world not india get your facts right. @disgrace isn't that what was done by your country in east Pakistan now known as Bangladesh? And the rapes that happened were on Kashmiri pandits(Hindus) by attackers supported by pk that came to capture kashmir due to which Kashmiri pandits fled away.
Here is the full story and it is the responsibility of the news organization to report the whole story.
"Police, however, claimed today that the allegation levelled by the woman was false and rape has not been confirmed in the medical test done on her."
The police also added that women's claim of bribe money being paid was not corroborated when her claims were cross checked.
While the rape is a despicable crime that happens everywhere in various forms, it is the responsibility of new organizations to report the full story. Otherwise, news organization becomes a propaganda machine. Most of the report by AFP are biased and should be taken with a pinch of salt.
Indian Army and Indian police is used to raping innocent girls in Kashmir. They are getting back the hatred which they injected in their officers...Sickening...!!!
If on any given day, there are no news of rape reported are the real news. These are no news anymore. It is like if a dog bites a man is no news and if a man bites a dog is news.
India is rightly called the 'rape capital of the world', and for obvious reason.
Well Indian Police and Army have been systematically raping Kashmiri women and children for decades with impunity.
If there is justice for this rape victim, there has to be justice for the kashmiri women, whether by the Indian Courts (unlikely) or International Criminal Court.
Incredible India
modi clean india.
