In the midst of all this, civil society has been organising protests and statements and meetings against the perpetrators of the violence. The opposition has disappeared. And one is referring to the opposition because a democracy, and particularly one as big as India, cannot function without an effective counter. Governments, no matter how streamlined and efficient they believe themselves to be, cannot think for all of India that has to be represented by opposition parties whose work then is to expose the fault lines, mobilise opinion in and outside Parliament, and demand action.
The Congress party has sunk into a deep morass. Congress President Sonia Gandhi has been forced to take note of the fact that her son, Rahul Gandhi, is not really acceptable to the party, and has appointed a seasoned politician from Karnataka to lead the party in Parliament. One is not clear whether she is aware of the wave of hatred that routed the Congress from this country, and the people’s continuing anger with India’s oldest party. If she is, she certainly is doing nothing about it. If she is not, then the ignorance itself amounts to hara-kiri.
The Left parties have almost opted out, with their only mission being to survive somehow in the three states —West Bengal, Tripura, and Kerala — where they exist. Their response time is so long that often statements are issued when the country is already past the crisis, and plunged into another. And the structure and functioning is so bureaucratic that it has become unresponsive and insensitive to the aspirations, concerns and demands of the people at large.
The regional parties of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar sank like a stone in the Lok Sabha elections. But if one looks at the attitude of these warlords, one would think that they are in power not just in the states, but at the centre itself. The arrogance is visible in the dark, and the swagger even more exaggerated if that was possible. Samajwadi party chief Mulayam Singh is perhaps, the worst, with the violence in Muzaffarnagar followed by the hanging of the two young girls in his state. His remarks ‘men will be men’ drew stern admonishment from United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.
The people per se are trying to do their little bit but then as the Pune incident showed, there is so much and nothing more that civil society alone can do. The mobs that were allowed the run of the streets of Pune striking terror and torching vehicles, finally caught hold of the innocent IT professional and beat him to death. The opposition parties have not issued a single statement, nor sent a delegation to the spot, or to the chief minister for full, transparent justice, or for that matter to that young boy’s inconsolable family.
It is imperative for the opposition space to be vibrant and functioning, otherwise governments become autocratic and tyrannical even in a democracy. Perhaps even more so in a democracy, as without challenge and without accountability, the worst decisions are taken. Indian federalism has grown in leaps and bounds, but unfortunately after good starts, many of the regional parties have been completely taken over by autocratic families and their set of muscle and moneyed men. Inner party democracy no longer exists, and the writ of the leader on top prevails. This has slowly seeped the vitals of the political parties that really now resemble a hollow carcass. And is reflected in inaction and statements of the Mulayam Singh kind.
The result is that while the space is there for federal parties and a vibrant opposition, as reflected in even these elections, the current lot just do not inspire confidence. Where they did, they have been re-elected, as Jayalalithaa in Tamil Nadu, Mamata Banerjee in West Bengal and Naveen Patnaik in Orissa. It now remains to be seen whether an opposition will emerge from the ashes of the electoral debacle and strengthen democracy? That is the million-rupee question to which no one has a definite answer yet. A couple of months, however, will reveal all.

@Motiwala: Get a life, and some perspective. You have already decided the outcome - Blame Modi - and are now hunting for data to fit that narrative.
Irrespective of when you checked - check again. Indian system is a federal system, which means some issues are state issues, and some are central. Law and Order is a state issue - which means Maharashtra government (which is, ironically, Congress government) is responsible for not only the crime in Pune, but also the follow-on law and order. So, if some fringe hindu mob is responsible for this crime, by all means the government should arrest them, try them in court and punish them - which is exactly what is happening.
I know these facts does not fit your agenda, but then facts are stubborn thing - they exists weather you like them or not!
Writing absolute rubbish in the name of journalism has to be patented and given as gift to this author and her Anti-Modi cottage industry friends. However they have only contributed to Modi becoming more popular. When will they understand allegations needs substance and arguments some sense. Distortion of lies will only strengthen the Truth.
ET- please allow response to someone who has written to me directly.
@Motiwala: You do not understand the federal nature of government in India. Law and order are state subjects. The states where these crimes happened were not ruled by BJP. In any case, no state government can ensure zero crime. The problem with the Badaun crime was that the police were recruited on a caste basis by SP ( which by the way are staunch opponents of BJP). This unprofessional police was unwilling to register FIRs against criminals of same caste. There was a strong reaction and not only have the police in question been suspended, the home secretary of the state has also been suspended.
Since you clearly do not understand how India works let me provide you some information: The Prime Minister and his cabinet have oversight over subjects in the central list (foreign policy, defence, trade, energy, telecommunication etc.) and concurrent list(labour, education, health) - not over state subjects.
@Motiwala :its not unusual that People like you have scant knowledge of the way a Democracy and specifically a Federal democracy runs.long stints of autocratic Generals has taken away the sense to judge the functioning of a federal structure in a democracy PM can't run the country by his own ,specially when his govt has not even completed half a month.roles of state and Central are clearly demarcated with Centre exercising overriding powers only in emergency situations. and how short is your memory ? when Gujarat riots happened every one accused Modi as he was the CM then, although 3 month old only... as a PM no body accused Atal.had these acts happened in BJP ruled states, all including author would surely have roasted the state govts by now.
A so called consultant in india doesn't know whether It is orissa or odisha . Nobody cares these rascals.
Opposition is not saying anything because opposition is ruling these states. Saying anything agains Mulayam Singh Yadav is sin under secularism. And how can you say anything against Maharashtra government, it is run by the God of secularism himself.
@Gp65: Last time they checked,...an Indian PM is in charge of the whole country. Not 7 states or 15 1/2 states. Or just a portion of the country, per se. When a party wins an election on anti Muslim vitriol, anti minorities, anti caste agenda, with a very aggressively propagated...."Prove Your Hinduness" doctrine,..then that is quickly digested by the great illiterate masses of Indians. Certainly you can see the aping of the demanded behavior, by these incidents. The callous statements by Indian politicians, regardless of party affiliations, are a true reflection and indication that Great Gandhi's India is dead. Gone. It is almost pathetic to see Indian trolls defending Lord Modi. At all cost.

Which opposition is missing? It is extremely mischievous to write an article in a Pakistani newspaper implying all the incidents you had mentioned has happened because of BJP and Modi and no opposition is there to ask them any questions. So to set things straight, Badaun happened in UP under SP Government which is staunch anti-modi. The Pune tech muder case happened in Maharastra under Congress Government. Finally BJP has barely a simple majority in the Parliament and while the country is hoping this would signal more decisiveness on the part of central Government, contrary to what was seen over the last 10 years. For some reason author get over the fact that BJP has got majority on it's own.
@Motiwala: The BJP government is only DAYS old.......to jump to DEFINITIVE conclusions is in my opinion........hasty.
@Motiwala: Men will be men - was a remark by Mulayam Singh Yadav (specifically he said oys will be boys). He is an opponent of Modi. Babulal Gaur wo made another absurd comment is a BJP member but by no means a close associate of Modi and certainky not a member of the federal cabinet. The party has already disowned his irresponsile statement as not being the party psotition. Finally law and order are state responsibility. BJP just rules 7 states and UP and Maharashtra where the incidents quoted happened are not BJP ruled.
Modi himself from low caste cant see these thing wonderfull man wonderfull india.
Wonder of wonders! AAP doesn't even find a mention in this blog. What did happen to AAP, which was once compared to Imran Khan's party?
Could not read past the first two paragraphs. Now your are blaming people who elected the government. When the party in power did not deliver for the people, they get thrown out. That’s what happened in a democracy. Why don’t you go back to grade school and learn how a democracy works instead concocting rubbish.
@Parvez: '..a hasty one."..Perhaps you did not read this blog in detail. You breezed through it. The implication is: With Modi in charge and his cabal roaming, the ultra conservative hindus now have a carte blanche, to do as they please. Specially regarding minorities. ' men will be men'...this from a Modi henchman, Singh, regarding the two girls raped and hung from trees. So, a benevolent, benign smile is all that can be expected from Lord Modi, regarding such crimes.
Although a crime is a crime and must be addressed.......but the connection you have tried to make is certainly a hasty one.
i would like to give the opposition including Congress a benefit of doubt...they are yet to emerge out of the shock of their life time. you can't expect a fight from a person who is still licking his wounds.on a separate note state govts need to tackle the above problems.
Opposition ? Nonsense. I like the one-party system that we have now.
Absolutely rubbish ... this article is a mischievous attempt to politicize petty crime ... !! ... what have the incidents of crime got to do with opposition or the ruling party of a country ... ? ... what is the point in politicizing a law and order issue ... ?? ... let the police and the judiciary do their duties of maintaining law and order ... !! ... it is a shame that the author does not have a single word about the fact that India has been ruled by the Congress party for over 60 years since independence, and if any entity is responsible and answerable for where India is today, it is the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty and its criminal enterprise, the Congress party ... !!
You have little confidence in India and Indians but the truth is that people will oppose corruption, violence and misgovernance. There is also media and judiciary. But yes what will end is corruption in the name of coaliation dharma and that is a good thing.
What for do you want to oppose the 12 days old government ? Most of the incidents you have quoted, happened in Congress/ congress allies ruled states. Why Indian media is not blaming congress Chief Minister of Maharstra like they used to blame Modi for everything? Trust me, Indian media also has lost its credibility and now whole world knows about it. Time for Indian media to put its house in order and to play the role of constructive opposition when there is none in parliament.
In a parliamenatary democracy, Opposition is the people and not the parliamentarians who do not make up majority. Just because a party has a majority that does not mean people who elected the parliamentarians will accept every move they make.
Modi will have opposition from his people if he cannot deliver what he promised. If prefer the Indians should maintain their multiparty democracy vibrant.
