WASHINGTON: US President Barack Obama will meet Ukrainian president-elect Petro Poroshenko in Poland on Wednesday, a US official said.

The meeting will take place during a trip by Obama, also including stops in Belgium and France designed to underscore the US security commitment to eastern Europe following Russia's annexation of Crimea, said US Deputy National Security Adviser Ben Rhodes.

Obama will also meet a large group of central and eastern European leaders in Warsaw, where he will go to take part in the 25th anniversary celebrations of Poland's first free post-communist elections.

In France, where he will travel for the 70th anniversary commemorations of the D-Day landings in Normandy, Obama will come face-to-face with Russian President Vladimir Putin, from whom he has been estranged over Moscow's actions in Ukraine.

But there are no plans for Obama to hold a formal bilateral meeting with the Russian leader, Rhodes said.
