LAHORE: Pakistan has handed over 151 Indian fishermen to India via the Wagah border, Express News reported on Monday.

On May 25, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had ordered the release of 151 Indian prisoners currently detained in Pakistani jails and 57 Indian fishing boats in Pakistani custody ahead of his historic visit to New Delhi to attend Narendra Modi's swearing-in as premier.

Following these orders, the fishermen accused of violating Pakistan's territorial waters have been released.

Nawaz’s decision is seen as a goodwill gesture ahead of his visit to New Delhi for the oath-taking ceremony of Narendra Modi.

Modi’s invitation to Nawaz to attend the ceremony has been widely seen as a bold diplomatic statement that he intends to improve ties between the two countries.
