Thar Coal Project: Power generation to start in 3 years

Thar coal has potential to help the country overcome the debilitating energy crisis.

HYDERABAD: The Rs180 billion Thar Coal Power Project of Block-2 of Thar coal reserves will start generating 330 megawatts of electricity within three years which will help overcome the chronic energy crisis in the country, according to CEO Engro Company Shamsuddin Shaikh. During a briefing on the Thar Coal Power Project, he said the Thar coal has the potential to help the country overcome the debilitating energy crisis. He sought to quell the propaganda about hazards of coal-based energy, saying that 43% of electricity is being produced through coal in different countries of the world. The completion of the Thar Coal Power Project, which is a joint venture of the public and private sectors, will start producing 330MW electricity daily by 2017 which will be extended by 500MW per day for a period of 50 years.
