HYDERABAD:

The security of Chinese engineers working at an oil exploration site in Matiari seemed to be compromised as the police claim of having foiled two separate kidnapping bids.

The Matiari police engaged four to five suspects near the site in Darya Khan Talpur within the limits of Bhit Shah police station on Tuesday evening. SSP Matiari Amjad Baloch, who led the operation, told reporters that the police were informed about suspicious men moving closer to the site.

"Two men were on a motorcycle and later, two or three more arrived in a car," he said. "The car did not have any number plates. One of the landlords informed the police about this suspicious activity."

The suspects, it is believed, managed to escape but the police have detained 10 people for an interrogation.

Three days ago, SHO Bhit Shah Haneef Mehar, arrested three suspects and recovered weapons from them. The suspects, Bhuro Lashari, Pehalwan Lashari and Ismail Panhwar, had allegedly planned to kidnap the Chinese engineers. The police claim that they were assisted by a big kidnapping gang.

According to the SHO, the three men were booked in a kidnapping case on a complaint from the police while a court in Matiari gave them a week's physical remand on Monday. The SSP added that the Chinese were provided security by private guards who are on duty at six security posts around the site.
