Convocation: IMCG — Post Graduate students celebrate their achievements

The Hameed Alvi Gold Medal was conferred to Nighat Shaheen, for standing first in the Punjab University exams in 2012.

ISLAMABAD:

Smiles lit up the otherwise dark hall when students of the Islamabad Model College for Girls (IMCG) — Post Graduate were awarded degrees at their convocation here on Wednesday. 

A total of 323 graduate and post graduate students for the 2010-12 session were rewarded with degrees, with 23 graduates and 15 postgraduates receiving Roll of Honour awards for their outstanding performance in different exams.

Quaid-i-Azam University Vice Chancellor Dr Eatazaz Ahmad said that while education was essential for progression, it was also an important aspect in developing confidence that gives a person a sense of protection. He said Islam as a religion was in favour of girls being educated and calls on humanity to learn and guide in order to spread those messages.

“An educated mother can guide her children better,” He said. “Investment in education is vital for the progression of the country,” He added.

While encouraging fresh graduates to enter different fields he said that educated women should target working towards development in the country. “Serving the nation should be your future responsibility. You are decision makers and your contribution matters,” he said.

He also took the opportunity to announce a scholarship name after his sister, Musarat Almas, at the college. IMCG Principal Firdaus Fatima presented a shield and college insignia to the chief guest.

The Hameed Alvi Gold Medal was conferred to Nighat Shaheen, who stood first in her class in the Punjab University exams in 2012. The Azra Raza Excellence Award, which carries a cash award of Rs50,000, was awarded to Sidra Pervaiz, a graduate of the year 2012.  Moreover, three assistant professors and two non-teaching members of the college were also awarded shields on completion of their silver jubilees — 25 years of service at the college.

With the pass percentage of the masters program in mass communication for 2012 standing at 97%, the IMCG principal said that the college was the only one in Punjab apart from Punjab University that was offering a full-fledge mass communication graduate degree and was delighted to see such a magnificent result.
