While political pundits attribute Narendra Modi’s win to Congress’ failure, one cannot discredit the man for creating a new record in Indian democracy. Here is a quick examination of.
Urban voters and youth
Modi pledged to chart a separate policy for the neo-middle class; his manifesto talked on the issues of development. The youth was mobilised by his chants of brining employment into the country.
Corporate banking
Undoubtedly, BJP is the most preferred political lot among traders of the country and big corporate honchos that see its leader and incumbent Gujarat’s chief minister as a wave of development. Their confidence stems from Modi’s credit-worthy performance in Gujarat during the last three terms in the state.
His closeness to some corporate houses is openly known, and they have been enjoying a great success in Gujarat. Shares are expected to jump further when he takes over.
Polarised elections
It would be no exaggeration to say that votes have been polled on communal lines this time, and hence the saffron party reaped maximum dividends in a nation where one religion constitutes the majority of the population.
This was true especially in the state of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, where elections are fought on the fore-ground of communal lines. Here BJP gained in-roads with some controversial speeches from Modi’s lieutenant Amit Shah.
No real threat
The ruling United Progressive Alliance or Congress-led UPA never had a figure as grand and imposing as Modi to counter him. Aam Aadmi Party’s Arvind Kejriwal fought against him, but was too new into the fray to pose any real threat in the constituency of Varanasi from where he lost against Modi.
Even Rahul Gandhi, who was said to be the face of Congress leadership never troubled the BJP, as a majority was disillusioned by Congress and its rule over the 10 years.
Upbeat after wins in assembly elections
The real booster for BJP was winning assembly elections concluded only a few months ago in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhatisgarh and getting the maximum seats in Delhi. The saffron brigade was upbeat about carrying the confidence to the national level as well.
Modi came, he saw and he conquered – the phrase perfectly describes the rise of who went from being a tea-seller to proposed prime minister of the largest democracy in the world.
His critics would often blame him for using excessive money and publicity agencies to perfectly strategise his popularity, but the rigorous campaigning paid off and the so-called Modi-wave turned into a tsunami during the final counting as BJP engulfed India and won two-thirds majority.

@manoj.a.p: Simple: Urge to live longer is human!
article could not explain why over 200 muslim dominated areas voted for BJP
@Singh Are you the only Singh in this world? Get a life loser.
Hmm.. another indian view in a other foreign newspaper! I wonder how Mr. Modi will treat these free journalists!

@Singh: It is highly objectionable that you are using my name & writing against Modi. Shame on you Mr fake Singh.
The most heart warming thing about this election was, the Anti Hindus could not split the Hindus by caste. Hindus of all caste came together for once. Modi will succeed in erasing caste borders. I now have high hopes for India and the Hindus! Modi is a great uniter! Thats for sure!
@Sajida I am with you. Let's start protests against ET? I believe it is one of the mouthpieces of India in Pakistan.
Trust me guys, no tsunami can withstand the ridiculous rigging that happens in Pakistan. If Modi was contesting elections in Pakistan, He'd have suffered the same fate as Imran Khan.
@Razi: "@blackjack Muslim have voted en-bloc historically for a secular party to safeguard their rights as a minority. That is not communal voting." If that is true, what happens now? How do you safeguard your "rights" because that "secular" party has been decimated partially because of you? This is collective communal myopia. Sikhs are also a minority. Why isn't the charge of communal vote bank laid at their door? Yet Sikhs have prospered and flowered all over India and the world. Muslims have floundered all over. Every minority has only those rights as a minority which the majority in its munificence may deign to grant it. No minority has the means to get its rights enforced except through the concurrence of the majority. What Indian Muslims did was to have a nice little arrangement with a corrupt, pseudo-sickular party to barter their votes for a cosy life for both at the expense of the majority which created the wealth to finance that cosy life. It suited both the Muslims and that corrupt elite quite well, until the majority decided to pull the plug on it.
To all the Modi lovers, venting their anger at Muslims and especially Pakistanis plz note that the author may be a muslim but he is a student of journalism in an Indian university. You get published in a Pakistani newspaper and give all sorts of hateful comments about Pakistani muslims shows the magnanimity of Pakistanis becuz none of the Indian newspapers would dare to publish such comments if anyone from pakistan would say so.
Modi succeeded where Imran Khan failed.
An old artcle of mine on minorities voting for the BJP. Seems so true now. http://yethinraj.blogspot.in/2013/07/why-minorities-should-vote-for-bjp.html?m=1
@ Imran khan Who was claiming there was a tsunami all across Pakistan last year. This is how you create a Tsunami. The opposition will now be fighting for who should be the opposition leader in Indian Parliament.
tsunami instead of coming to Pakistan diverted it course and went to India
@blackjack
Muslim have voted en-bloc historically for a secular party to safeguard their rights as a minority. That is not communal voting. But then someone like you, who comes to ET only to denigrate everything Muslim and Pakistani, it would be difficult to understand this. And your support of an ultra right wing party and a hugely tainted figure only shows where your true sympathies lie.
Modi won because he dared to kill 2000 Muslims in Gujrat and speaks quite sternly against Pakistan and this what is 'Popular' in India. Nawaz Sharif did not get two third majority on anti-India slogans. Difference is clear. We must not forget Mr. Modi is member of RSS and Shiv Sena; two most extreme right wing Hindu nationalist parties.
Its nor just Journalists of Pakistan but Indian Journalists who love to sit in the lap of the powerful, lick their dirt and mislead common masses by articles such as this. We in India did not vote as a community, and this has happened for the first time post independence. We voted as one for our development. Creating a divide and making people believe that Modi is anti muslim is absolutely insane. Modi stands for development of all indians. Pity he hates Pakistan but he has all reasons to do so. When we stand economically strong compared to your poor state, then we shall discuss further Rizvi saab.
Dear Readers The reason for Modi landslide victory is simple- Polarisation. The Hindu Muslim divide in India has been a creation of Congress govt especially Gandhi family. Giving out scholarships only to Muslim children,Haj subsidy to Muslims while tax on Hindu pilgrims, Imaam bhattas ignoring hindu pandits, shameless display of Muslim Appeasement while preaching secularism - all these angered the Hindus and Muslims in India failed to raise their voice against such divisive policies of Congress party...Ground was prepared for Modi by Congress itself...Modi didn't make one single communal comment..And what a joke, Pakistanis questioning secularism of India??? A Pakistan where minorities are raped, kidnapped and killed, forced to leave home....where pregnant women are killed ,hundreds die in sectarian clashes?? Pakistanis are losing their priorities....
Can you not stop thinking "Communal" every time ? Can any Muslim think beyond the cast ? . You brand the same thing for permanently. Why insult the people who voted BJP for the confidence shown by Narendra Modi? Are Muslims not communal? What are the laws in your country about hate of God ? Why not talk Indian leader from Hyderabad who said Please keep Police away for 15 minutes.. we will do... What happened at Flora Fountain 2 years ago in the name of Muslims of Myanmyar? When you are going to think rationally ?
"It would be no exaggeration to say that votes have been polled on communal lines this time, " what a blatant lie. If hindus have voted on communal lines, Modi's vote share should have been 70-80% and not 30-40%. How can such rubbish be published ET. Pl publish my counter to such lies
@Narendra: God? What are you talking about? Where does God come into this??
I keep seeing this in just about every article published in Pakistani papers, but believe me, Indians voted for Modi not because of the Hindutva, but because they saw a real hope in him taking the country forward economically.
This same BJP won 15 years ago, then lost twice, and is now back. Can Hindutva explain this? No. Can Hindutva explain BJP not winning West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, etc.? No.
Please respect Indian voters judgment. If the Pakistani's don't vote for the religion-based parties, why do you believe the Indians would do so?
God gives you what you want,We make our faith ourselves. What we do with others , actually we are doing with ourselves.
It would be no exaggeration to say that votes have been polled on communal lines this time, and hence the saffron party reaped maximum dividends in a nation where one religion constitutes the majority of the population. Muslims vote as a community, and this behavior is defined as consolidation by media and its encouragement is called vote-bank politics by the BJP - but the writer needs to understand that this is a euphemism for communal voting. Ordinarily there is only communal voting from one community, which benefits the pseudo-secular parties like Congress, Samajwadi Party, and more recently Aam Aadmi Party. This time Hindus and some Muslims voted in UP across caste lines for an aspirational party, and to argue that 2 speeches by Amit Shah in Western UP would result in 73/ 80 seats is a joke.
