Preliminary results at the end of the marathon six-week election showed his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) almost certain to secure the first parliamentary majority by a single party since 1984.
"I want to make the 21st century India's century. It will take 10 years, not very long," said the four-term chief minister of western Gujarat who is expected to be sworn in as prime minister next week.
The results exceeded all forecasts. Petals were showered outside BJP offices around the country, sweets were handed out to celebrate and painted elephants paraded in front of party headquarters in New Delhi.
Partial figures from the Election Commission showed the BJP winning more than the 272 seats required for a majority on its own in the 543-seat parliament, with victories by its allies taking it easily in excess of 330.
The Congress party, the national secular force that has run India for all but 13 years since independence, was set to crash to its worst ever result with fewer than 50 seats, less than a quarter of its tally in 2009.

The alliance led by the BJP and possibly the party alone, was headed for a majority in parliament, giving Modi the most decisive mandate for any leader since the 1984 assassination of prime minister Indira Gandhi propelled her son to office.
Unlike his predecessors, Modi will not have to deal with unruly coalition partners as he implements reform. That could usher in profound economic changes, and he will try to replicate his success in attracting investment and building infrastructure in Gujarat, the state he has governed for 12 years.

How come anybody with fever takes paracetamol and anti-biotics then? Law is the same. Beliefs can be diverse. If somebody wants to believe that sky is the tent and mountains are the pegs, by all means they can.
Let's see which lasts longer, Modi's Indian Century or Hitler's thousand year Reich!.
I am afraid Pakistan is going to miss Manmohan Singh. Modi is the opposite of Manmohan. Tough times ahead for Pakistan. I believe Modi would make life difficult for Pakistan in international forums. After 2014, US may not have much use for Pakistan so it might be amiable to use its influence for triggering international sanctions against Pakistan just like it did before 9/11. At that time, the sanctions were done to please india but now they have their own reason for sanctions as payback for Pakistan not helping them solve the Taliban problem in Afghanistan.

@Mirza Umar Baig: How do you know that he's an extremist?
Hindus and Muslims voted modi to come power.Great modi
@Mirza Umar Baig - "If Indians can elect a man like Modi. Why can’t we elect an extremist here?? I’m just wondering." - Recall Direct Action Day (aka Direct violence day) in 1946 and the slaughtering of 5000 Hindus in Kolkata. Who was that hero that you guys worship? ET - Please publish.
the best thing according to me which comes out of this election is that the bastions of caste, region and religion have been breached comprehensively.BSP scoring a big zero,SP -05,JD(U)-02 ,RJD-04 and similar carnage for caste based parties all over. dividing forces have been sent packing.a paradigm shift for the Indian polity for sure.first election fought purely on the issue of development.BJP scoring 73 out of 80 in UP is unprecedented..similarly BJP overshadowing Congress in Assam is historical,Bihar's intentions were clear although.a decisive leader with ample majority is godsend gift for India..Buddha has smiled once again.
@crazy: You worry about your land of pure.
If Indians can elect a man like Modi. Why can't we elect an extremist here?? I'm just wondering.
The worst day of their lives for the following indians:
Jawed Naqvi Seema Mustafa Aijaz Zaka Syed Aakar patel Something..Vij..and other countless CONgressi.
I have always said india will be Modified this century. With a clean majority for BJP, Modi sarkar will bring up living standards for ALL the indians, regardless of class or religions. However, for some of the our indian muslim brothers, who like their pakistanis counterparts, still believing in the culture of desert and that the camel is the fastest vehicle, you won't improve your lot. No matter where you live in the entire universe.
dear mr. editor- this victory will be positive for pak-india relations. Remember- vajpayee saheb of the bjp visited pakistan. Now Nawaz Saheb and Modi will try their best to boost pak-india ties... so let us hope indo-pak trade levels will zoom beyond 20 billion dollars within the next 5 years....somewhat like china and taiwan trade ties have gone beyond 150 billion dollars per year. Think positive , and everything will work out fine.

AAP lost on all 7 parliamentary seats in Delhi (where they had earlier been elected to power). They did however manage to corner 4 out of 11 seats in Punjab
@Dr. Asad Sadick, Germany: "Muslims of India…start packing. Look for other greener pastures. Pakistan is pretty barren."
When Muslims of Gujarat never left Gujarat to go to another state during his 12 years rule, why should other Indian Muslims do so? Anyway, he has received support from many Muslims and BJP has won seats where between 33% to 50% of electorate is Muslim. That is a big deal in a first past the goal post multiparty system
Yeah good times for murderers, criminals, fascist terrorists
Congratulation to all Indians for selecting the Right Candidate Mr. Modi. Hopefully this victory of BJP will start a new Era for India and whole region's prosperity. We Pakistanis had our chance in electing a Non-Family, Non Dynasty rule in last year's election by choosing Imran Khan, but too bad, most Pakistanis are not at that stage of democratic maturity yet. They still want to be ruled for the same man (PML-N), same family (PPP) over and over again, even after being disappointed so many times by both these parties performance. Hopefully they use their minds instead of their hearts next time and choose a new candidate next time. Z
If Modi term is successful , then there is a lesson for Pakistan in this election. Throughout Pakistan's history, its leaders have come from feudal backgrounds. Maybe a chaiwalla person from a more humble background like Modi is the change which Pakistan needs.
Mark my words modi will work as a catalyst to dismembrane India.
Where is Ms Seema Mustafa, yaad keejiye madam. My comment from 12th of April 2014: Dear Ms Mustafa Our family is an ardent supporter of congress. My uncle went to prison during independence and later he worked for congress. Now we shall wait for the results of the Delhi elections. Then we shall know whether what you are saying holds water or not. You said that there is no BJP wave in Delhi. Remember these words! Please remember you are talking about India. Dont mess around with our feelings.
Muslims of India will benefit the most under Modi rule. Most Indian Muslims are involved in some or the other vocation like weaving, construction industry etc. Modi will come out with special policies directed towards various vocations. Just watch out how the lives of Banaras weavers will be changed during next few years. It will be the Muslims who will vote for Modi in large numbers next time.
@Afaq: Keep reminiscing about the now-irrelevant 2-nation theory. Pak was created based on that, but running the country is a different story. The theory won't help you to make Pak prosper. BTW, are you ready to embrace 20 million muslims from India?
Indian news are reporting that Pakistan PM NS has called and congratulated NaMo.
@uzair: Pakistan has been improving under Nawaz Sharif with a better economy; Hopefully India will also improve under Modi and both countries can work for peace in the region.
Pakistan learn. Give new leadership a chance. Somehow we can't get over Bhuttos/Sharifs !!
ET why was my comment censured about my country? Remarkable achievement what's more astonishing 136 Muslim constituency voted for bjp and won. Even more astonishing is all minority constituency in Gujarat voted for modi bjp Muslim candidates and won. All secular parties and others lost . Bjp 26 ,cong-0, aap-0, others-0 -Gujarat. Shows his development work has even touched minority. They don't want to loose momentum and vote for congress or others. People this time didn't fall for religious polarisation and hate campaign by others and voted for development and economy. Indians are becoming smart politicos while choosing their leaders. Hope he fulfils the aspirations of the people.
Hopefully BJP not gonna repeat its past mistakes.
Now the election rhetoric and election is over the hard part starts for Modi and his party. More jobs, rule of law, less corruption in all walks of life, low price rise and inflation, less tolerance among people of different faiths and ethnicities..............". Etc. etc.
Will BJP will meet expectation of the voters? Let us see what happens in the next five years!
It may interest reader to know that a Pakistani newspaper namely IHT game me the best review of the indian election ! Being partly indian myself i believe NaMo will concentrate on economic issues and pursue peace with important neighbour Pakistan . I hope Pakistan PM Mr Shariff will vial the opportunities and reciprocate peacefully too .Jai Hind - Pakistan Zindabad
BJP CROSSES 272 AND ACHIEVES MAJORITY! . Cheers
Congrats to Mr. Modi & India for an Historic Election, with historic Voters turnout & an historic no. of seats won... Well I believe it will better for India regardless of Mr. Modi's alleged involvement in Gujrat riots.. If Mr. Abdullah Abdullah wins in Afghanistan, it will be tough job for Mr. Nawaz Sharif in Office which is in all kinds of pressure from M.Establishment & Imran Khan. Pakistan already has jeoperdized its relations with I.R Iran due to allgedly Saudi Arabian dictation. Abdullah Abdullah wount trust Pakistan due to past sour experiances on Pakistani envolment in Afghanistan. & Modi will never trade politics with Pakistani Softly & wont compromise an inch on back foot. keeping in view above points Nawaz Sharif has to Apply himself according to situation. he has to complete his tanure at all costs. Coz he is currently the Man for Pakistan, although he hasnt done any thing about thousands of missing persons specially Balochs and also security issues. but performing really well in Economy & Energy Sector.
No mention or update on AAP? My dear neighbor India, what's happening?
@Sheheryar: Dear Bother I could not understand you logic, he is leading a state for the last twelve years very successfully and I hope that he will be able to deliver.
Wonder what will US do as far visa to Mr. Modi .He has been consistently denied one over the years because of his role in Gujrat anti-Muslim riots.
After Vajpayee it is again a good time for the people of India and Pakistan. RSS and BJP both feel that people of pakistan and India belong to have same origin and same culture. RSS gives importance and feel proud of the cultural heritage of our two nations. RSS and BJP are against the forces who are disintegrating the common chord of our two nations. As much pak based cultural organisation fights against the home bred terrorism, RSS and BJP fight in India the forces of destabilisation. USA and China use our two countries for their market economy, therefore, they make us to fight ourselves within and against each other through their proteges in our both countries. They are the two enemies of our countries who are responsible for our poor economy growth. Modi, with background of his fighting the evil forces of destabilisation, is very clear in mind. He is going to fight the forces head on against the forces destabilising the growth potential of our two countries by making it free from self styled religious divisive forces who build their political empire and religious hegemony by dividing the people of two great religion of our two countries. Good days are coming to the people of our two countries that would work for removing poverty from our two nations.
@Afaq: My dear Asfaq, the two Nation theory has already been defined in 1947 and no further definition required. India and Pakistan are two Nations we must dump the ast and start afresh and the theory live and let live must be carried forward. If we help each other we can do miracles and I hope this to be happen in the near future.
@Afaq: hoping the same from the across the border
@Indian:
Name a developed democracy that does not have Uniform Civil Code? You are not an Indian so stop masquerading as such.
One nation one law. No more mistreatment of muslim women. By the way more muslims women are getting educated and they are not going to take your crap from you any more.
Now India will become the next Switzerland...Lol...dream on..
@Pakistani Munna:
and you cannot do a damn thing about it, can you?
@Raj - USA:
Both of which are going to make India better. One country and one law for all. It is time sweep away divisive laws and policies forever.
Get rid of antiquated British era laws still on the books and reform civil service.
"Jai Ho!" Happy days are here again!
This talk that Muslim vote is important proves that once Hindu vote consolidation takes place there is no stopping. This is what has happened now, that muslim vote does not matter.
Heart felt congratulations to Mr.Modi. We want good relations with India
@Kamran:
For real though bro, your argument is so shallow! What the Indians do and who they elect is none of your concern. We as Pakistani have tons to learn from the democratic ethos and the benchmarks of public representation in India. My sincere felicitation to our fellow Indian posters for yet another successful parliamentary election and a smooth transfer of power to Modi and hope that Indo-Pak relations ushers into a new era. History has recorded that the most tangible diplomatic breakthroughs between India and Pakistan have taken place whenever BJP has been in power.
Congratulations to all Indians who have voted for a decisive and a mature leadership...a landslide victory for BJP+ is only the beginning of an arduous journey.on a separate note exit and opinion polls have been proved wrong once again, but this time for the detriment of Congress.best of luck to Mr Modi for a successful future.....
Pakistan Should be ready to face more challenges...
congratulation to people of India for rejecting dynasty family and giving mandate to a commoner...
@Kamran "Sharma to khud ko magar ati nhi", Google GDP of His state Gujarat and then compare with whole of your country. People like you the real reason of what Pakistan is today. You think that you are right and 1.27 Billion in India are fool? Don`t try to lecture other country you should try to develop your country by starting Polio Vaccination and yes stop begging from USA. (Your country have a good potential but sadly with people like you)
Modi will define Two nation theory to new generation.
@Pakistani Munna: Eliminating minorities? Gujarat was riot free for last 12 years. Not only riot free but it has ot even seen a sinle day of curfew. 2002? Culprits of both communities responsible for a riot in which 790 Muslims and 254 Hindus were killed are in prison. Now compare that to Karachi law and order situation where twice as many Muslims were killed in target killing in 2013, 2012, 2011 and on and on.
The percentage of Muslims in Gujarat between census 2001 and census 2011 has not changed much. Had Muslims been so fearful, they would have migrated oyt of Gujarat- did not happen.
Pakistani munna : Pl take some antacid tablets. Come out of your delusion and chill. Your current mental state is not good for your health
RIP congress.... for at least 5 years...................
Trolls of BOTH countries (esp Pakistan) are gonna have a field-day (in fact "field-1800+days" i.e. 5 years!) ... fantastic times for various publications/media-houses to make excellent "Advert revenues" ..:-) Make hay while the sun shines (Pakistan for sure needs to more than India) ...!!
India veered towards the right decision.
@Arijit Sharma: Aapko bhi mubarak. 55 seats are needed for a party (not a coaliation) to have officially designated Leader of Opposition. Since Rahul was very ambivalent about leading, it looks like the country will not put him in the dilemma of having to be LOp.
@uzair: Agree with your sentiment. The last prime minister from BJP had also extended a hand of friendship to Nawaz Sharif and even gone to Meenar-e-Pakistan but got stabbed in the back with Kargill. At the height of back channel talks in 2007"-2008, Mumbai happened and based on testimony of Daood Gilani aka David Headley it is clear that the non-state-actors had state backing without which they would have been non-actors.
I hope Pakistan army learns its lesson from Kargill and does not try more advenures. If it reins in its non-state-actors, Pakistan-India relations will flourish ( I hope that happens). But if they try stunt then Modi will not act like Mr. Singh when India was attacked. Just as there was a disproportionate response in case of Kargill, (as described by many of your politicians and media), so also would be the case under Mr. Modi. The idea that Pakistan army should be allowed to create mischief without any consequences does not find any resonance among ordinary Indians.
Mian Nawaz Sharif of India is winning - Congrats Lions of Pakistan and India ;-)
@Sheheryar Just after juma salat I have seen many young people were really happy for Modi. How do you know that he got a crook Mentality? He has proved himself in Gujarat, You just need to visit Gujarat once and surely you will know the real meaning of Development and Industrialization. Praying from Allah (SWT) for such chief minister to my state as well.
Dear Mr Modi
In your haste to replicate the Gujarat model across the country, please dont make India a dry country !
Why are Indians passing messages to their newly elected PM on a Pakistani News website? May be, Modi should look at creating a version of ET for India. Pun Intended.
@vasan: " I hope Rahul gandhi, Sonia gandhi and their congress clan lose even deposit. "
They will very soon meet the same fate as Bahadur Shah Zafar. Their wealth, power and prestige will all be taken away.
Proud Moment for Every Indian power of democracy A boy who sold tea at railway stations is the 14th Prime Minister of India, the worlds largest democracy. .......Congrats Mr Narendra Modi. .....
hopefully modi will promote business with the neighboring countries...after all he is gujarati
u will show him the door after 5 yrs....
@ RAJ-US Uniform civil code is stupidity for diverse country like India with diverse culture customs and religions. Last time our neighbor Pakistan tried to do that by creating a single unit which was seen as attack on bengali culture and resulted in breaking of country. Its impossible for country like India to do that
democracy wins as people transfer one power to other.........
Finally the monopoly of congress has ended. Indeed an independence day. Shows the mindset of indians are maturing while choosing national party for stable govt. the Muslim constituency, backward castes, others, traditional strongholds of congress and communist are all broken and swept away from bjp who voted for development not religious, caste ground. Remarkable achievement single largest party since 94, no dependence on allies and toleration of coalition dharma needed. He will be able to frame and head strong policies of development and national policies on his own. Big challenge ahead he has raised the hope and ambition of indians. Hopefully he will transfer the economical development magic of Gujarat to pan india level. Control all mischievous people who might create problems including secular parties who won't be able to digest this defeat and try create religious tension. If he fails to do so indians will show him the door too like man mohan, don't underestimate the power of common man! Best of luck modi.
The butcher of Gujarat on the way to become the next PM. Pity.
This Hindu Extremist Snake Modi has won election like Adolf Hilter won election in Nazi Germany by promising prosperity for Majority while eliminating minorities.
Congress are Hindu extremists in the closet, while BJP are Hindu extremists in the open. There will be no impact on Pakistan.
I hope the Idiots in GEO TV will stop airing their "aman ki asha" garbage.
@Raj - USA:
I don't believe that article 370 will be deleted by Modi sarkar. Modi received the people's verdict on the promises of development of the economy which requires foreign investment and technology. any attempt to abolish article will send wrong signals to overseas investors and the status quo will be maintained. Religion was not an issue at all in modi's campaign though cross border terrorism was a concern. We common men wish and the Modi sarkar would like to ensure that the benefits of economic development reaches to the lowest strata irrespective of religion, caste and creed. But naturally the educated ( i mean those who have acquired/ develop skill) will be first to be benefited. Muslims particularly those who are educationally ( comparatively) backward from others will be quite back in the queue to taste the fruits of development. However the persons engaged in the business be it trade and or manufacturing / serving will definitely feel the difference have the opportunity to prosper.
'Good days are coming' tweeted Modi today. Hope he achieves this dream for the 125 crores people of India who has voted his party to power. This is a also good opportunity for Pakistan to improve its relations with India by following a positive policy with its neighbour which will surely be reciprocated by the new govt in New Delhi. A lot will now depend on the Pak PM to follow a independent foreign policy taking its military into confidence which would be beneficial for both countries.
Hats off This is just purely one man show
seems like a good news. but in my perspective modi is not mature enough to run a big country like this. he has crook mentality not good to run country affairs. manmohan singh deserves better farewell than given to him. sad to see this with him. good luck.
I hope Rahul gandhi, Sonia gandhi and their congress clan lose even deposit. I also hope Congress does not become the opposition party. They dont deserve anything to do with India's governance. Unless congress throws out the Gandhi family out of party, they dont deserve to win even one vote.
Happy Independence Day to all.
Modi is secular person. The issue is that nearly 50% of Indian muslims are not secular so their communalism is under the threat. He is known for development of all the communities.
Mr.Modi has to build economy and country . If he won't , we will show him the door as we did in case of Congress .
@uzair: I salute your optimism buddy. But the fact is, Modi has much more to do in terms of economy and clean-up of corruption in our institutions before looking at improving Indo-Pak ties. While it is important but certainly not priority.
Cheers & Peace!!
India Pakistan realtion was better during previous BJP rule. Let there be more trade and economic initiatives between two countries. Look for win win situation and hope for the best.
A Tea seller beats oxford educated Incumbent prime minster. Only in India could this happen. Another triumph of our democratic system. That if you win the confidence of masses, you can reach mountains. What makes me happy, that we will have stable government for another 5 year and I hope that it will propel the market and provide better governance to people without any coalition dharma
Hopefully the new PM fulfill the aspiration of billion people.
Good news for Pakistan as right wing parties are/will be in power in both countries. Time to move ahead on road to peace...
Narendra bhai, we all have huge expectations from you not only on development but also on the ground that minorities in india will be protected and their religion will grow..now by god's grace you have got the post of PM of our country.. Work for our country and show the world that you are not communal and under BJP regime not only majority but minorities will also be give equal chance... It a great chance for you to show your commitment towards this great nation which has made you PM... Cheers to you and all BJP workers... Jai Hind...!
Looks like Modi's BJP has bagged substantial muslim votes. Congress+ forecast just to win 75 seats whereas BJP+ expected to win 325 seats.
China and USA competing to become the first country to congratulate Modi on his tremendous victory. India is forming a single party majority government after a long time of coalition governments.
Vote counting underway and according to latest trends Modi's BJP on its own is expected to win 275+ seats and with allies expected to win 320+ seats. As only 272 seats are required to form a majority government BJP has made it on its own. After a long time, India will be seeing a stable government, a government that need not depend on its allies. However, Modi will take along others and I think India will have uniform civil code and Article 370 pertaining to Kashmir will be repelled.
before everyone starts of saying how this modi will be terrible for muslims.... Remember Nawaz's promise of bullet train? Lowered taxes? Anti corruption? These are all plain and simple, for elections. I see Pakistan and India propsering under Modi. We may even have Pakistan players play in IPL next year.... However, there are people out there who wouldn't want us to become better friends and something harsh like Mumbai might happen. India AND Pakistan has to mature and move forward, with no pre conditions. ET pls publish.
Sensex goes high...Rupee become stronger than dollar...modi is our next pm
