According to details, at least 16 people were injured, five them critically including a girl, when an IED device exploded outside a food outlet on College Road, in the jurisdiction of City police station.
Following the explosion, a heavy contingent of law enforcement personnel, including police, Bomb Disposal Squad rescuers and fire brigade, rushed to the site and cordoned off the area.
It is suspected that the blast was allegedly carried out by the extortionists who in the past demanded money from owners of the food outlet and even also carried out a cracker blast outside their house on January 3, 2014.
An official of Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) said that 500 grams explosive material was used in the blast.
City Police Officer (CPO) Humayun Bashir Tarar said that the IED was exploded through a remote control.
The blast also damaged the restaurant and motorcycles parked nearby, CPO added.
