KARACHI:

Pakistan’s Haris Nadeem suffered back to back defeats but managed to stay in the IBSF World U21 Championship, and will now play in the last-64 phase of the event being played in Al Fujairah, UAE.

Haris had started off the competition in style, winning first the two matches, but things changed for him as he was easily conquered by his opponents in the next two ties.

Iran’s Siyavosh Mozayani proved too good for him on Wednesday as he won 4-1. Mozayani won the first frame to get an upper hand but Haris drew parity in the following game, making the score 1-1.

The third frame was a much closer affair as compared to the initial two as both cueists went neck-to-neck till the end. But Mozayani pipped Haris by a margin of 13 points and then won the fourth frame as well to build a 3-1 lead.

Haris tried his best to manage a comeback in the fifth game, but eventually lost with scores of 92-24, 07-77, 61-54, 57-16 and 74-41.

Meanwhile, compatriot Mohammad Faheem failed to make four wins out of four in group stages as he was defeated by Poland’s Mateusz Baranowski 4-2 with scores of 53-56, 68-47, 79-45(71), 72-08, 27-64 and 104-27(104).

Faheem will also play in the last-64 stage of the competition.

Hamza Akbar and Mohammad Majid Ali are the remaining players in the Pakistan quartet who can still make it directly to the last-32 stage of the event if they win their last group match.
