The Sindh High Court (SHC) sought reports from the health secretary, Karachi Metropolitan Corporation and DIGs of the relevant districts of Karachi regarding measures taken by them to stop the manufacture, supply and sale of gutka and mainpuri.
Headed by chief justice Maqbool Baqar, the bench also issued notices to the Pakistan Medical Association’s Karachi chapter, the Pan Masala Manufacturers Association and the Pakistan Centre of Scientific and Industrial Research (PCSIR) to file their comments by the next hearing. Rana Faizul Hasan, the general secretary of United Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, had gone to the court to seek ban on gutka, which is hazardous to health.
