Move over the Dr Rajit Ratha cameo he did in The Amazing Spider-Man. Now, Irrfan Khan will be a full-fledged villain in the third instalment of the superhero franchise, scheduled for the 2016 release.

When approached for the cameo in first The Amazing Spider-Man movie Khan admitted that he wasn’t really interested in the project at first, but since both of his sons were excited about it and insisted that he goes, he took up the role. Khan later described his role as Dr Ratha as a “pivotal” and revealed that he got his role after appearing in the drama television series In Treatment.

And now, Khan is in the running to play one of the Sinister Six villains that are hinted towards the end of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, reported Hindustan Times.

The role the actor has been approached for is being looked upon as an important one. “Irrfan and Marc Webb (director) share a great rapport ever since he worked in the first part. And although his role was a small one, Marc has been keen to work with Irrfan again. Things are yet to be finalised,” revealed an insider.

When contacted, Irrfan — who has just returned from the US after having shot for Jurassic World — decided to play safe: “I don’t know about it (his role). Their film is still in ¬theatres. I think now they will finalise the script and decide other things.”

A spokesperson for the studio’s India division said it was “too early to ¬comment on something like this.”

Both Webb and actor Andrew Garfield have hinted at strong villains in the next outing. Webb has said that “it’s going to be really difficult for Peter Parker to move forward”.
